Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop – and with CO2 emissions of only 99 g/km – is the winner of a fuel-saving comparison test in the latest issue of Auto motor und sport. The magazine tested 24 cars, of which ten in the compact class.
Volvo is in first place together with Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Blue Motion and beats Toyota Prius which ended up third.
Auto motor und sport had worked out a test route of 280 km with a split on city traffic (80 km), country roads and highway (200 km). All cars were driven by various editors several times. At the end of the "real life test" both Volvo and VW had emissions of 124 g/km CO2 (4,7 l/100 km) and the Prius had 128 g/km (5,5 l/100km).
In the city the climate system, seat heating and radio were switched off, on the country roads and on the highway they were on. Average speed on country roads including villages was 60 km/h, on highway 110 km/h.
Some conclusions for Volvo C30 after the test:
• Relatively small technical steps with big effect
• Perfectly working Start/Stop system
• Strong, refined and harmonic diesel engine with very low consumption
• Safe driving behavior
• Top safety equipment
• The C30 was the only car that had a lower consumption on the highway than on country roads
• Small trunk
• A little weakness in the first period of acceleration only
