ABC NEWS: Volvo XC60 and S80 among the five safest cars in the world

An excerpt from the article:

"Volvo walks the talk on safety – being on the cutting edge is part of their culture", says Jack Nerad, auto safety expert.

For city driving, the edge goes to the Volvo XC60. It's the only car on the road today to feature automatic braking. "In stop and go situations, if the person ahead of you stops suddenly, the Volvo XC60 will stop automatically if the driver doesn't hit the brake fast enough", said Nerad. "Typically, Volvo has this type of advanced capability."

Volvo XC60 clearly wins active safety system test by German ADAC

The largest automotive organisation in world, German ADAC, has carried out an extensive comparison test of different automatic speed and distance control systems.
Volvo XC60 clearly won the test in which six different models were compared.

"ADAC has carried out a total judgment which included the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) as well as the Distance Alert and City Safety. As far as I know this is the first time a test evaluates the total effect of those safety enhancing functions," says Jonas Ekmark, Active Safety Hub Leader at Volvo Cars.

In the report of the ADAC test is said: "the Volvo system scores above all due to  the fact that it consistently puts its emphasis on accident avoidance. The driver is informed about a danger by a red flashing warning lamp, which is projected onto the windscreen. At low speeds, below 30 km/h, the additional, integrated laser technology called City Safety also recognises stationary vehicles and in a potential accident situation, brakes in time to stop the car."

"Our promise - best possible safety"
"It feels good that ADAC pays attention to that we have a system that consistently avoids accidents. That is our promise to the customer; to offer the best possible safety", says Jonas Ekmark.

The exceptional position of City Safety is underlined by the fact that this system is not only unique in the whole world, but it is also in mass production in the current Volvo XC60.

ADAC underlines another characteristic of the Volvo active speed and distance control system: "even with the ACC switched off, the driver is efficiently but not disturbingly warned, if below the safety distance.

ACC in all-new S60 - plus a world first function
The active speed and distance monitoring system is currently available for the Volvo XC60, Volvo XC70, Volvo V70 and Volvo S80. It will also be offered in the all-new Volvo S60, which will celebrate its world premiere at the beginning of March at the Geneva Motor Show.

On top of the ACC system, the all-new S60 has a world-first function; Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake - a system that brakes automatically for pedestrians and can avoid a collision at speeds up to 35 kph. The all-new S60 includes City Safety, as the XC60, as a standard feature.

The other cars in the ADAC comparison test were Audi A4, Volkswagen Passat CC, Honda Accord, Lexus IS and Ford Mondeo.

ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) is the world's largest automotive association with some 16 million members.

Volvo XC60 wins interior design award

The Volvo XC60 premium crossover was awarded as one of Ward's Auto World Auto Interior of the Year for 2010 today. Ward's Auto Interior of the Year Awards, North America's only honors for excellence in automotive interiors, have been announced for 2010.  The list features winners in pricing and vehicle type categories, as well as special award winners for design, versatility and brand expression.

The Volvo XC60 took top honors in the Premium-priced truck category and was one of nine other vehicles honored in the annual award. A team of eight Ward's editors evaluated 40 vehicles that have either all-new or significantly upgraded interiors this year.  The vehicles - both car and truck - were divided into segments, with one winner named in each category.  In addition, Ward's bestowed special awards for outstanding achievements in key areas. Having both designations allowed judges to rank vehicles against the entire field, regardless of segment and price.  Judging criteria included aesthetics and design harmony, comfort, driver information, ergonomics, fit and finish, materials, safety and overall value.

The Volvo XC60 introduced a bold new interior design when it went on sale last year as a 2010 model. All the passengers sit comfortably in the newly designed seats, yet it's obvious that the driver is in charge. The characteristic slim center stack gains a fresh design with a new integrated navigation (optional) screen that's angled slightly toward the driver. The interior also has been designed so every detail looks like it's in motion.

The stitched seams of the unique, sculpted XC60 seats have a pronounced X-theme with the choice of a single color, or contrasting colors. The curvature of the forward edge of the rear seat cushion has been designed for easier entry and exit. The rear seat is also somewhat higher than the front seats to give its occupants a better view. The two outboard seats can be specified with the same two-stage child booster cushions that were introduced in the Volvo V70 and XC70 in 2007.
