Volvo’s driving robot is a brilliant piece of technology that can compile huge banks of data to make its cars handle better. We let it take us for a ride…
By using a driving robot, Volvo engineers can get cars to perform repeatable manoeuvres – over and over again. This makes it possible to improve the way cars drive by collecting high-quality data from a wide range of tests. For example, an engineer will set a route around a track and the robot’s on-board software will learn it, allowing the car to drive exactly the same set path at the same speed – all day if required. And it doesn’t need to stop for coffee or lunch. But what’s it like to actually sit in the car when the robot’s driving it? We find out…
