      • We know that you want to a avoid collisions under all circumstances, also at low speeds. And it only takes a moment’s distraction in a busy city centre to find yourself in just such a scenario. So we wondered whether it would be possible for your Volvo to lend a helping hand. Well, that’s exactly what City Safety is all about, a laser-based technology that can sense an impending collision at speeds of up to 50km/h. In the first instance, City Safety prepares the brakes so that they respond faster when you press the pedal. And if you fail to brake, City Safety will apply the brakes for you and switch off the throttle to lessen the effects of a collision. Even better, if the difference in speed between your car and the one in front is less than 15km/h, City Safety can prevent a collision from happening in the first place. City Safety is activated as soon as you start your car, and ready to assist you in such an eventuality. City Safety is just one element of our complete approach to car safety. We call it IntelliSafe, and it’s a programme targeted at fulfilling our aim to create cars that will help you avoid collisions altogether – it includes such features as Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and much more.
    • Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection
      • Statistics show that in half of all rear-end collisions the driver at fault doesn’t brake at all. Active at speeds above 4 km/h, our collision avoidance technology can give you audible and visible warnings if you’re too close to a vehicle in front or if there are pedestrians or cyclists in your path. If you don’t react and a collision is imminent, full auto-braking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. Within a range of 150 metres, a radar sensor behind the grille continuously monitors the distance to the vehicle driving in front of you and a digital camera behind the windscreen determines what objects are in front of you. During daylight it can also detect standing or moving pedestrians or cyclists. If a pedestrian or a cyclist unexpectedly swerves out in front of your car or if a vehicle suddenly brakes (or is stationary) and Collision Warning senses that a collision is likely to happen, it will prompt you to act with a flashing warning light on the windscreen along with an audible alarm. Moreover, this technology supports driver-initiated braking by pre-charging the brakes to reduce the braking distance. If you don’t react to the warning and a collision is imminent, the car immediately brakes with full braking force.
    • Driver Alert Control (DAC)
      • You know the scenario. Maybe you’ve had a long day at the office or possibly too many hours behind the wheel, and your attention begins to waver. This is a danger zone that we’ve given a lot of thought to, because distracted drivers cause up to 90 per cent of all accidents. That’s why we’ve developed Driver Alert Control (DAC) to help distracted drivers at speeds over 65km/h. A camera looks at the road ahead while DAC checks on your steering inputs to see how they compare to your regular driving style. If it senses that you’re driving more erratically, or there are signs that you’re drowsy or distracted, it’ll give you an audible warning and a message on the instrument panel suggesting you take a break.
    • Anti-locking brakes with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) and Ready Alert Brakes (RAB)
      • When you’ve been caught by surprise by another car pulling out of a junction unexpectedly, that’s when large anti-lock disc brakes really come into their own – shorter stopping distances at times like this make all the difference. And if you find yourself travelling down a mountain road with the need to brake often and hard, you’ll welcome our brakes’ resistance to fading. But since there is always a risk of fade, your Volvo is prepared for this, too, with Fading Brake Support (FBS). This system gradually builds hydraulic brake pressure so that you always have reassuring pedal feel. But what if you find yourself having to brake in an emergency, and perhaps not applying the necessary pressure to the pedal? Well, we’ve developed Hydraulic Brake Assist, which ensures that maximum braking pressure is applied hydraulically during a panic stop. Likewise, if you suddenly lift off the accelerator or sensors detect an obstacle in front of the car, Ready Alert Brakes instantly move the brake pads closer to the brake discs to reduce the braking distance. And Electronic Brake Distribution ensures that the right amount of braking goes to the front and rear of the your Volvo depending on where the load in the car is distributed and what the road conditions are.
    • Adaptive brake light
      • Active at speeds above 50 km/h, the adaptive brake light can sense the difference between normal and panic braking. If there is a panic situation, all the brake lights will flash at a rate of four times per second. Once your speed slows to below 10 km/h, the lights stop flashing and hazard lights flash instead. As a result of using LED technology that needs less time to light up than regular bulbs, traffic behind you can react sooner.
    • Warning triangle
      • This lightweight wide-angle reflector stands upright to alert other road users even in strong winds and on slippery surfaces. It folds easily and stores in its own case.

    Protective safety

    • Reinforced passenger compartment
      • Imagine the peace of mind you and your passengers will have knowing that a strong protective steel cage surrounds you. And that it’s reinforced with one of the strongest steel types available – boron steel. In a collision, the front and rear crumple zones help to dissipate the energy of the crash to reduce the impact on those inside the car, while in a side-on impact, our Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS) distributes the crash force across a large portion of the car’s body to further reduce your risk of injury. And to further help protect passengers, there is a steel cross-member under the dashboard.
    • Energy-absorbing frontal structure
      • The unique geometry of the frontal structure and longitudinal steel struts in the doors help disperse crash energy away from the front to the rear of the car, reducing impact effects on driver and passengers. The fact that all Volvos have transversely mounted, compact in-line engines, results in maximum space for deformation and energy dispersion.
    • Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)
      • We believe that the car should bear the brunt of any collision, not the people inside it. That’s why we’ve developed our cars so that they offer legendary protection, not just from front and rear impacts, but also from side-on collisions. The steel framework of the car – and that includes the front seat frames – has been designed to help displace the impact of a side-on collision away from the people inside and prevent intrusion into the cabin. And because we understand that an impact with a larger vehicle is a possibility on busy roads, the extremely strong side structure contains ultra-high strength steel to help withstand a severe impact. We have even taken into account the side windows – the Inflatable Curtain (IC) works in conjunction with SIPS and the side airbags to protect people in the front seats. In the rear, SIPS and the IC protect the passengers in the outer rear seat.
    • Safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters
      • Safety belts are the first line of defence when it comes to help protecting people during a crash. That’s why we introduced them in 1959. We also invented the audible and visual safety belt reminder and today, everybody in the car is reminded to fasten their safety belts before moving off. And in the information display on the instrument panel, you can check that the rear seat passengers have all fastened their safety belts and that nobody unfastens them during the trip. Pre-tensioners activate to tighten the belts within fractions of a second in the event of a collision. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled fashion.
    • Dual-stage airbags, driver and front passenger
      • In a frontal collision, the driver and passenger airbags help protect your head, face and chest. But because no two collisions are the same, the airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the impact. To help minimise the impact on the driver, the driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. And if the impact is low enough that the airbags aren’t needed, the system will just deploy safety belt pre-tensioners if necessary.
    • Side airbags
      • To help protect the chest and hip during a side-on collision, the side airbags inflate during a side-on impact. They are located in the ideal spot on the front seatback.
    • Inflatable Curtain (IC)
      • In a frontal offset or side-on collision, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear passengers who are sitting on the sides. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection in the event of secondary impacts. And in Volvos equipped with integrated booster seats, the Inflatable Curtain has been extended downward to improve head protection for smaller or younger children.
    • Collapsible steering column
      • The steering column is an advanced part of the safety system, with the upper and lower sections giving way in a controlled manner in a frontal impact to help protect the driver.
    • Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)
      • It’s something that happens every day in every major city in the world – a moment’s inattention and one driver runs into the back of another. And the result can be long-term injury as a result of whiplash. Volvo, as part of its IntelliSafe programme, has developed a system that can help reduce the risk of long-term injury by as much as 50 per cent. During a rear impact, the WHIPS system moves the entire seatback with the passenger or driver – similar to the way you might gently catch a ball – while the head restraint remains rigid to support the neck. A unique Volvo design.


    • Remote-controlled central locking system
      • A touch of a button on the remote control or the optional Personal Car Communicator unlocks the doors and bootlid. Use the personal settings menu to decide if the remote unlocks the driver’s door first, or all doors at the same time. You can also close or open all windows (including the sunroof if you have one) and unlock the boot separately.
    • Automatic door locking
      • To further enhance your personal security, the doors can be set in the information menu to automatically lock the moment you drive away. Alternatively, lock them swiftly from the front seats using the lock button. Lock buttons are also available for the rear seat passengers.
    • Immobiliser and theft-protected locks
      • Not only will the door locks withstand most break-in attempts, the electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right key. And even if a would-be thief manages to get into the car via the window, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open the door from the inside.
    • Personal Car Communicator (PCC)
      • PCC is an advanced remote control that combines ‘keyless drive’ with two-way communication with your Volvo. Keep the PCC with you and the car unlocks automatically as you pull the door handle. Start the engine by pressing a button on the dash, and when you park, lock your car by pressing a button in the door handle. Later in the day, if you’re wondering whether you’ve locked your car, the PCC can tell you by displaying the status that the car was last left in, wherever you are in the world. When you are approaching your car (within a distance of approximately 100 m), the PCC can give you a warning if the car’s alarm has been activated, and an extra visible warning if it’s been activated within the last five minutes.
    • Approach and Home Safe lighting
      • Activated with the remote control or the Personal Car Communicator, Approach Lighting provides a warm reception on a dark night. This consists of parking lights, interior lights and ground lighting too, if fitted. Home Safe Lighting is activated with the headlight stalk as you leave the car. This feature provides a low beam from the headlight to accompany you to your door, whether you’re returning home or are out on the road.
  • Seats

    • Power front seats, driver and passenger
      • Find your perfect seat position with push-button ease. Adjust the driver's seat and door mirrors to a position perfect for you and save the settings. Every time you use your central locking remote, the seat and door mirrors will automatically adjust to your preferences. Up to 3 different seat and door mirror settings can be saved into the memory system that is linked to the central locking remote controls. Each remote triggers the corresponding setting from the last time that particular remote control was used. Power front seats also facilitate entrance in the rear seat—simply lifting a handle will move each front seat forward.
    • R-Design seats
      • Inspired by racing seats, the R-Design seats feature seating surfaces in high-friction durable nubuck textile. Together with the seat's side support, this keeps you firmly in place even during the high lateral g-forces that often comes with inspired driving. Alternatively, the seating surfaces are in genuine nappa leather that have a genuine natural feel that is soft to the touch and adds a luxurious touch to the interior. Contrasting stitching enhances the sculpted seat design. And for the uncompromised sporty touch, sections of the seats are upholstered in perforated leather that also are echoed in the handbrake lever, gearshift gaiter and front centre armrest.


    • Panoramic roof
      • This exclusive panoramic roof will further enhance the experience of air and light for everyone inside the Volvo XC60. The front section can be opened at the push of a button, either by sliding it over the rear part, or by tilting it in the rear end. To help maintain climate comfort on sunny days, there's a power operated roller curtain. Dark tinted laminated glass increases comfort and security. It also helps protect from UV radiation. For safety reasons, the design of the panoramic roof is optimised and the two-piece glass is laminated.


  • Driver's support

    • Adaptive Digital Display
      • What kind of driver are you? The answer can change from day to day. Sometimes you want an active driving experience, at others you just want to cruise. The Adaptive Digital Display instrument option offers three set-ups – Elegance, Eco and Performance. They allow you to change the way you receive information according to your mood and driving style. Elegance with it’s black colour theme is the default mode, showing current and average speed, current and average fuel consumption, distance to empty tank, time and outdoor temperature. It also shows engine temperature and revs, and keeps you informed about your Active Cruise Control status. Another feature, Road Sign Information, displays a small symbol showing the current speed limit and overtaking rules. In a really smart move, your satnav directions pop up in the middle of the display so you don’t have to move your eyes between two screens. The Eco mode has a green colour theme and is all about encouraging and rewarding a fuel-efficient driving style. Of course, you still get the benefit of satnav directions and Road Sign Information. The Performance mode is in a striking red, and gives you a large rev counter with your speed in a digital readout in the centre. On the right, a power meter shows how much engine power is available, which is a useful tool for overtaking. You can also opt for the standard new Analogue Instrument Cluster with a single large dial and two complementary instruments on either side.
    • Volvo Sensus Connect
      • At Volvo, we know that staying connected to the world is important – even if you're inside the car. That's why we developed Sensus Connect. This innovative technology converts your 7-inch screen in the dashboard into an internet connected infotainment hub, giving you access to a host of convenient in-car apps for your entertainment, navigation, control, connectivity and service. This also means your Volvo already today is technologically prepared for coming web and cloud-based in-car infotainment functions. Adding Sensus Navigation will provide you with connected navigation functions, smartly integrated with your car. And with Volvo On Call, you get a WiFi hotspot for all your internet-connected mobile devices – it also includes an innovative smartphone app that gives you access to a host of remote functions, such as locking/unlocking the doors, starting the engine heater and just checking up on your car.
    • Sensus screen
      • Volvo's intuitive SENSUS screen allows you to explore conveniently the hi-tech features of your car and personalise them to suit your needs. All information is displayed in a high-resolution 5-inch or 7-inch colour screen. A push of the MY CAR button in the centre console gives you access to all system settings like City Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection, Driver Alert Control, Lane Keeping Aid, Radar Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Road Sign Information (RSI), lights, door mirrors, climate, central locking, audio and phone. The multimedia audio systems with 7-inch screen will also display the Road Traffic Information (RTI) navigation system, park assist camera, DVD, digital TV etc. Everything is conveniently controlled using the centre console or steering wheel controls – so you can keep your attention on the traffic and your hands on the steering wheel. And with our new Sensus Connect solutions, you convert the 7-inch Sensus screen into an internet-connected infotainment hub. It will give you further access to advanced in-car infotainment and connectivity, while enabling future web and cloud based in-car functionality.
    • Cruise control
      • Conveniently operated from the steering wheel, cruise control allows you to drive in a more relaxed way without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. The car maintains the speed you choose until you turn off the cruise control or press the brake, accelerator or clutch. After braking or using the clutch, the car returns to its previous cruising speed at the touch of a button. After accelerating – for instance to overtake – your car automatically reverts to its previous cruising speed once you release the accelerator.
    • Trip computer
      • Operated via the indicator stalk, the trip computer shows current and average fuel consumption, how far the fuel will take you and average speed – helping you drive more economically.
    • Park assist sensors, rear and front
      • Activated when you reverse, rear park assist sensors help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers increases in frequency as the car gets closer to the obstacle, becoming a continuous tone when it’s time to stop. Front park assist sensors perform a similar function at the front of the vehicle – alerting you via the front loudspeakers. The centre console SENSUS screen shows a top view of the car and the activated sensors.
    • Electrically powered foldable rear head restraints
      • The outer head restraints can be folded forward so they don’t block your field of vision when the rear seats are unoccupied. In the folded position, they are designed to obstruct passengers from sitting down without raising the restraints to their upright position. The rear middle head restraint can be fully retracted into the backrest to further improve rear vision. It’s designed to obstruct taller passengers from sitting down without raising the restraint to its upright position.
    • Rain sensor
      • Once activated, the rain sensor can start the windscreen wipers as soon as it begins to rain or if water splashes onto the windscreen. For your convenience, it can also automatically adapt the intermittent windscreen-wiper function. Its sensitivity can be adjusted via a ring on the wiper stalk.
    • Multifunctional door mirrors
      • The generously dimensioned door mirrors are power operated using a joystick in the driver's door panel. Indicators are embedded in the sides of the mirror – a nudge of the indicator stalk will activate three flashes of the indicator light, so there's less risk your turn will go unannounced. To further enhance your safety and comfort, there are options such as power folding, ground lighting and Volvo's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS).
    • Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror
      • Ending the need to take your hand off the steering wheel and stop headlight beams shining in your eyes, the anti-dazzle function is stepless and returns to normal when it's no longer needed.
    • Auto-dimming door mirrors with ground lighting
      • To help you negotiate those tight parking spots, your Volvo has electrically foldable door mirrors. And to make sure that a following car’s headlights don’t dazzle you, an auto-dimming function reduces intrusive light reflection. The door mirror auto-dimming function uses the same sensor located in your interior rearview mirror, which also dims when a following car’s headlights are too bright. This makes your journey safer and more relaxing at night. A handy light in each door mirror illuminates the ground beneath the front doors as you approach the car, which means you’ll see puddles and potential problems well in advance. The light also gives you extra security at night, especially in dark parking areas.
    • Illuminated vanity mirror
      • Fitted in the sun visor, lights come on when you open the vanity mirror cover – convenient and practical. Available for both the driver and front passenger.
    • Power windows, front and rear
      • The power windows have controls conveniently located in the door armrests. The front windows can be lowered or raised with a quick press or pull of a button, and you can lock the back windows from the driver’s seat if you’re travelling with small children. In this case, you’ll also be glad of the automatic anti-clamp protection, which will stop a window from closing on a trapped little hand.
    • Interior lighting
      • An entry light on both the driver and front passenger side lights the foot-well area as you get into the car. Front reading lamps are integrated in the roof console. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed in the roof and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver. The interior light will fade out gradually after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked.
    • Power Parking Brake (PPB)
      • The Power Parking Brake (PPB) makes moving off from steep gradients easier. Just press the PPB button, engage DRIVE or your first gear and pull away. The PPB will release automatically.


    • Bluetooth® handsfree system, integrated
      • Want to access your mobile phone while you’re on the road to find an address, lay out a route in the navigation system and call ahead that you’re on your way? The on-board Bluetooth® technology lets you do all this wirelessly through the infotainment system – and play some music along the way. Once configured for a mobile phone, the system automatically recognises your phone as you enter the car. And as you get in and out of the car, the system automatically allows you to switch freely from the phone to the handsfree system and back again. The audio systems High Performance, High Performance Multi Media and Premium Sound Multi Media include an integrated Bluetooth® handsfree system, allowing you to operate your phone conveniently using the buttons on the steering wheel or the centre console keypad. Phone information is shown on the centre console multimedia display. And if you’ve chosen the RTI navigation system, you can make your calls using voice control. What’s more, you can stream high quality audio from a media player and listen to it through the car’s audio system.     • Flat-folding three-split 40/20/40 rear seat
      • To provide multiple load configurations with a flat load floor, the rear backrest is split three-ways in the proportions 40/20/40. If you need extra space for ski gear for that trip to the Alps, lowering the centre section provides ample space for loading snowboards and skis, while still keeping the two most comfortable seats. What’s more, the backrests and head restraints only take one step to fold.
    • Flat-folding front passenger seat
      • To enable you to carry very long objects inside your Volvo, the front passenger seat backrest can be conveniently folded flat as an option. Not available together with Sport seats.
