CREATED FOR YOU

Clean design, natural materials and Swedish craftsmanship

Volvos are designed, tested and built in Sweden, so it’s not surprising that Swedishness is inside every aspect of our cars. The clean, unfussy design. Our affinity for natural, durable materials. Colours inspired by Sweden’s natural surroundings. And the uncomplicated, meticulous craftsmanship of our interiors. But we also believe that a car should be designed to suit the needs of the driver and passengers.

That’s why everything we do starts with you. Any why, at Volvo, we believe in listening. Because understanding your needs and desires lets us respond with great ideas and create the best possible products. So if you want a car that’s truly designed around you, then you’re in good company.

Thomas Ingenlath on Volvo’s design language

“People really appreciate the very strong and iconic graphics that Volvos have always had. It’s an upright honesty that is there in the shape.”

A flair for materials

Our use of specially hand-picked examples of flame birch shows the lengths we go to in order to ensure that only the best and most suitable materials make it into a Volvo. The most beautiful examples are the hardest to find, but we go the distance.

In good health

Our attention to detail in the interior of our cars goes beyond surface quality and aesthetics – we want our cars to be an environment that is healthy, soothing and luxurious in every sense. That’s why we even have a ‘smell team’ to make sure the experience inside a Volvo is like a fresh Swedish breeze.

Robin Page – Director of Interior Design

“An interior that is so well refined, that when you get in it, it makes you feel really special. Our creation is true to Swedish design principles and that is what makes it a Volvo.”

Three new concept cars

Three highly significant new concept cars made their debuts in 2013/14. Each one helped redefine Volvo’s future design direction, overseen by Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design. Inspired by simplicity, functionality and beauty, they embody the very essence of Scandinavian design.

All three concepts also perfectly demonstrate Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which allows many different designs to be built on the same platform.

And each one has its own emphasis: Concept Coupé showcased our new design freedom, Concept XC Coupé highlighted fresh safety ideas and Concept Estate explored the possibilities of a single touch screen control panel to organise controls and information in an intuitive, user-friendly way.

Recognition for our concept cars

It’s good to know that our new design direction is appreciated – our concept cars have all been recognised with significant international design awards.

Putting you in control

What do you want to see in the next generation of the Volvo On Call mobile app? That’s the question we asked when we invited thousands of people to give us their feedback. Most said they wanted more intuitive features to simplify their lives and put them in control. So we took on board a great suggestion to let you find and pay for a parking space from your car.

Keeping it simple

When our customers told us they wanted fewer buttons and a cleaner, uncluttered dashboard, we took that feedback on board. In the all-new XC90, for instance, we reduced the number of buttons on the dash from 42 to just 8. Not only does it look great, it also makes the controls much more intuitive to use.

Our three-year focus group

At Volvo, we’ve been busy revolutionising the idea of the focus group. When creating our all-new Volvo XC90, for instance, we didn’t spend just a week or a month talking to the public. In fact, we shared a full three years with five ‘LA Influentials’ from California so we could gain a truly in-depth understanding of what they really wanted from a luxury SUV.
