FEATURES & OPTIONS

Add something extra

  • Safety Comfort Tech & Sound Pack & Load Performance Environment
  • Preventive safety

    • DSTC anti-skid system
      • By helping to prevent fishtails, spinouts and rollovers, stability control technology like DSTC has been described as one of the most vital safety advances of the past decade. At the core of DSTC, a gyroscope senses the car’s direction and compares it with steering wheel movements as well as the actual rotation of the car’s wheels. DSTC is able to detect a potential skid and help counteract this by reducing the engine’s power output or braking on one or more wheels.
    • Roll Stability Control (RSC)
      • In the event of an emergency manoeuvre, Volvo’s Roll Stability Control (RSC) can step in to help prevent the vehicle from rolling over. It features a gyroscopic sensor that registers the vehicle’s lean angle and rollover risk. If required, RSC will cut engine power or brake one or more of the wheels just enough to reduce the centrifugal force and help regain balance.
    • Anti-locking brakes with Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA)
      • Generously dimensioned anti-locking, ventilated disc brakes help to ensure a short stopping distance in all situations. You can brake as hard as you like as you steer clear of trouble. Furthermore, they withstand tough use without fading. EBA detects an attempted emergency braking and, when necessary, provides added assistance to bring the vehicle to a standstill in the shortest possible distance. Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) distributes the braking effect between the front and rear wheels to achieve optimal results according to load and driving conditions.
    • Dual Xenon lights
      • For even better night vision, there’s the option of Dual Xenon gas discharge lamps. Compared to conventional halogen headlamps, Dual Xenon headlights expand your vision range by about 230%. This means you’ll gain a further 45 metres for braking. Independent of the load, these headlights self-adjust to maintain the correct angle to the road – even during hard acceleration or braking.
    • LED dayrunning lights
      • Automatically activated during daylight, these energy efficient LED lights make your car more conspicuous. And when the dipped headlights are needed for illumination, they are automatically engaged by a twilight sensor. What’s more, the spoiler integrated LED lights also add to the distinct styling of your Volvo.
    • Active Bending Lights (ABL)
      • In addition to improving illumination by about 230% using Dual Xenon light technology, the Active Bending Lights give a 90% boost to your vision round bends at night. Controlled by microprocessors, the motorised lamps turn up to 15 degrees in either direction when driving – reliably lighting up your chosen path. A twilight sensor disengages the adaptive function during daylight.
    • Side-marker lamps
      • Integrated front and rear side-marker lamps help alert other drivers to your car’s presence.
    • Water-repellent front side windows
      • To provide far better visibility in the rain, your Volvo’s front side windows help repel water as you drive. The hydrophobic surface treatment turns water into small drops that will be blown away by the force of the wind. This also gives you the benefit of less ice or frost in winter conditions. This option is offered in combination with laminated windows.
    • Warning triangle
      • This lightweight wide-angle reflector stands upright to alert other road users even in strong winds and on slippery surfaces. It folds easily and stores in its own case.

    Protective safety

    • Boron steel reinforced passenger compartment
      • In an accident, your car's front and rear crumple zones dissipate and distribute the impact around the car, while the roof pillars and transverse roof profiles absorb a great deal of the force if the vehicle starts to roll. They all form an interactive web of steel profiles, with the most crucial parts made of high-strength boron steel. In a side collision, the side-impact protection system distributes the crash forces across a large part of the car's body to help minimise the strain on the occupants.
    • Energy-absorbing frontal structure
      • The generous front deformation zones are designed to yield in a controlled way to help absorb crash energy before it reaches the cabin. The transversely mounted and very compact engine enables optimal use of the deformation zones to help protect occupants. Longitudinal steel struts help disperse crash energy away from the front to the rear of the vehicle, further helping to reduce the strain on the occupants.
    • Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)
      • SIPS is a Volvo unique safety system that has been developed to help protect the occupants in the event of a side collision. The steel framework of the vehicle – including the front seats – is designed and reinforced to help displace the impact of a side collision away from the occupants to other parts of the car body and help prevent intrusion into the cabin. The side structure is extremely strong to help withstand a severe side impact. The Inflatable Curtain (IC) for all the outboard occupants including the ones in the third row and the front seat side airbags interact to help provide further protection.
    • Roll-Over Protection System
      • To help protect passengers in a rollover situation, Our Roll-Over Protection System is activated by a sensor that monitors the vehicle’s lean angle. In the event of a rollover the safety belt pre-tensioners are activated for every seat to help keep passengers more securely in place. At the same time, the Inflatable Curtain deploys to help protect against secondary impacts.
    • Safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters
      • Safety belts are the first line of defence when it comes to help protecting people during a crash. That’s why we introduced them in 1959. We also invented the audible and visual safety belt reminder and today, everybody in the car is reminded to fasten their safety belts before moving off. And in the information display on the instrument panel, you can check that the rear seat passengers have all fastened their safety belts and that nobody unfastens them during the trip. Pre-tensioners activate to tighten the belts within fractions of a second in the event of a collision. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled fashion.
    • Dual-stage airbags, driver and front passenger
      • In a frontal collision, the driver and passenger airbags help protect your head, face and chest. But because no two collisions are the same, the airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the impact. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. And if the impact is low enough that the airbags aren’t needed, the system will just deploy safety belt pre-tensioners if necessary.
    • Passenger airbag cut-off switch
      • The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off, you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.
    • Side-impact airbags for driver and front passenger
      • These help reduce the risk of serious injuries to the chest and hips in a side-impact collision. Inflating in a fraction of a second, they're fitted in the outer edge of the front-seat backrests, ensuring they're always positioned securely by your side. Together with the SIPS system and the Inflatable Curtain (IC), they help provide a unique level of protection.
    • Inflatable Curtain (IC)
      • Inflating in a side-impact or rollover accident to help protect the heads of all outboard occupants including the ones in the third row, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect whether you’re in the front or the rear. It also stays inflated in multiple or longer-duration accidents to help provide extended protection, regardless of whether the windows are up or down.
    • Collapsible steering column
      • The steering column is an advanced part of the safety system, with the upper and lower sections giving way in a controlled manner in a frontal impact to help protect the driver.
    • Energy-absorbing interior
      • All the panels and door sides are padded with energy-absorbing materials to help reduce the risk of injury to the car’s passengers.
    • Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)
      • It’s something that happens every day in every major city in the world – a moment’s inattention and one driver runs into the back of another. And the result can be long-term injury as a result of whiplash. Volvo, as part of its IntelliSafe programme, has developed a system that can help reduce the risk of long-term injury by as much as 50 per cent. During a rear impact, the WHIPS system moves the entire seatback with the passenger or driver – similar to the way you might gently catch a ball – while the head restraint remains rigid to support the neck. A unique Volvo design.
    • Head restraints
      • Positioned to offer optimum protection irrespective of the occupant’s height, the restraints offer drivers and passengers outstanding protection. The rear middle restraint can be fully folded into the backrest to improve the driver’s rearward visibility.
    • Anti-submarining protection
      • To help prevent that passengers slide under and out of their safety belts in the event of a big impact, the seats feature anti-submarining guards which are specially shaped panels angled upwards at the forward edge inside the seats.
    • Third row safety
      • With head restraints, three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners, IC inflatable curtain and a generous rear crumple zone, two passengers up to 160 cm ride as safely and comfortably here as in any other seat. The seat’s position above the rear axle contributes to added side-impact protection and - to help provide added protection if the vehicle rolls over - the roof and the side pillars have extra reinforcement. At the same time, the safety belt pre-tensioners and IC are activated to help protect the heads of the occupants. Children from the age of three to about ten should be seated on a booster cushion and wearing a safety belt.
    • Protective system for other cars
      • Not only is the XC90 built with a monocoque body and the same type of crumple zones found in the rest of the Volvo range, the body structure itself is still at the same height as the bumpers of most other passenger cars - despite its high ground clearance. In a frontal collision or side impact, the additional lower cross-member below the front bumper is designed to activate the other car’s own crumple zones more quickly. This can save vital milliseconds, time that may also save lives.
    • Protective system for unprotected road-users
      • The front structure and bonnet are designed to help reduce the risk of injury to unprotected road-users. The front is gently rounded, the headlamps are integrated flush with the body and the bonnet acts as a crumple zone if a pedestrian is hit, thus helping to reduce the risk of serious injuries.
    • Volvo On Call and smartphone app
      • The Volvo On Call app lets you access your car’s dashboard, plus get your door lock status, fuel level, maintenance warnings and much more! Push the Volvo On Call button or use your mobile app to speak to an operator, who can dispatch assistance to your GPS location if you require roadside assistance. If a collision is detected, your Volvo alerts a trained operator to contact the vehicle and send emergency service. You can also remotely control the climate in your car using just your smartphone. Use the app to pre-heat your engine or warm up the cabin of your diesel Volvo, without using the engine. It’s one of life’s little everyday luxuries with a Volvo.
    • First-aid kit
      • The first-aid kit is conveniently carried in the load compartment and contains a variety of bandages. The contents are stored in different compartments to make it easier to find what you need in an emergency.

      • To further enhance your personal security, the doors can be set in the information menu to automatically lock the moment you drive away. Alternatively, lock them swiftly from the front seats using the lock button. Lock buttons are also available for the rear seat passengers.
    • Immobiliser and theft-protected locks
      • Not only will the door locks withstand most break-in attempts, the electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right remote control. And even if a would-be thief manages to get into the car via a window, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open the doors from the inside.
    • Approach and Home Safe lighting
      • Activated with the remote control or the Personal Car Communicator, Approach Lighting provides a warm reception on a dark night. This consists of parking lights, interior lights and ground lighting too, if fitted. Home Safe Lighting is activated with the headlight stalk as you leave the car. This feature provides a low beam from the headlight to accompany you to your door, whether you’re returning home or are out on the road.
    • Power retractable door mirrors
      • In smaller garages or narrow lanes, being able to fold in your mirrors at the touch of a button is a real benefit. Thanks to their ground lighting you can avoid puddles and pavement edges.
    • Laminated side door windows
      • Extremely tough laminated glass in the side windows turns an attempted smash-and-grab into a total waste of time for the would-be thief. It also contributes to a quiet cabin. Additionally, this option includes water-repellent glass in the front side windows for improved visibility in wet weather.
    • Lockable wheel bolts
      • These provide a simple, effective way of reducing the risk of aluminium wheels being stolen. The wheel lock features one uniquely coded socket enabling only you or your garage technician to remove the wheels.
  • Seats

    • Ergonomically designed seats
      • The seats in your Volvo may well be the most important ones in your life – over the lifetime of your car, you will probably spend thousands of hours sitting on them. That’s why we spent so much time developing their ergonomic sculpted design, firm yet comfortable, with supporting side cushions and ergonomic padding. Indeed, our seats are widely accepted as some of the finest in the car world. They have features like stepless lumbar support in the front seats, which allows for the tiniest degrees of adjustment for the best support for each individual. Add in our wide choice of upholstery materials and designs, and you’ll have a seat you’ll never want to leave.
    • Seven individual seats
      • All occupants will appreciate the comfort of a separate ergonomically designed seat. Cinema-style seating helps provide an excellent view, wherever you're seated. The easily adjustable front and second row seats make it easy to find the perfect seating position and maximum comfort. The middle seat also features an integrated booster cushion and can slide forward additionally to put the child in even closer contact with parents in the front seats. You can even remove the tunnel section's rear section to add extra legroom in the rear middle seat. In the third row of seats two passengers of up to 160 cm rides comfortably and are surrounded with comfort-enhancing details such as armrests with built-in cupholders, tables and a practical storage compartment between the seats. This area can also be fitted with its own air conditioning system, including adjustable ventilation vents. Each rear seat is easy to fold individually into the load area floor so you can transport both passengers and cargo without compromising on either comfort or safety.
    • Fully adjustable front seats
      • There’s no such thing as a standard-sized Volvo owner. That’s why we’ve taken such care to design seats that can be manually adjusted to fit a huge range of physiques. You can, for example, change the height and the angle of the seat cushion to suit you perfectly and give full under-thigh support, whatever your shape or size. This great adjustability is also optionally available for the passenger seat. To make sure the small of your back is comfortably supported, the lumbar support can be adjusted on each front seat. And the seats slide back and forth over such a large range that even the tallest or shortest drivers will find their perfect driving position.

For your comfort during long journeys, the front seats are ventilated and feature an Executive massage treatment.

    Climate

    • Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)
      • Volvo’s IAQS continuously monitors incoming air and will, if necessary, temporarily close external air vents to shut out carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone and nitrogen dioxide. When the air vents are opened, an active carbon filter protects the passengers from other harmful gases and unpleasant odours. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.
    • Electronic Climate Control (ECC)
      • Electronic Climate Control (ECC) maintains the cabin temperature you choose and can be set independently for the driver and front passenger. Further contributing to your health and comfort, the system’s humidity sensor helps ensure cabin air has an appropriate level of humidity in relation to the outside climate.
    • Adjustable rear air vents
      • Air vents that are conveniently located in the door pillars at face level create a comfortable environment for rear seat passengers. They also keep ice and mist off the rear side windows, which makes for a safer journey.
    • Third row AC
      • Supplementing Electronic Climate Control, this manual air-conditioning system boosts comfort in the third row. Passengers can conveniently adjust fan speed themselves and regulate air flow via separate vents.
    • Cabin filter
      • Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.
    • Heat-reducing windscreen
      • For a more comfortable interior climate, this windscreen reduces heat radiation from the sun through the windscreen and the temperature inside the car by filtering out the sun’s heat-generating invisible infrared rays.
    • Electrically powered glass sunroof
      • This electrically powered glass sunroof adds a further dimension of airiness and light to the interior. And if the sun is in your eyes, just pull out the integrated sunblind. The sunroof can be opened or closed at the touch of a button in the roof console. It can also be opened or closed together with the side windows using the central locking remote control, the Personal Car Communicator or the lock button inside the car.
    • Fuel-driven engine and cabin heater
      • A fuel-driven heater will make your car easier to start, warm up the cabin and help reduce the environmental impact – a cold engine produces far more harmful emissions than a warm one, and will increase engine wear. Start the heater directly, or set the time you’d like to enter your warm and defrosted car. With a remote starter you can activate the heater without going out to the car. And if your car is equipped with Volvo On Call, you can start the heater using your smartphone.

    Storage

    • Cupholders, front and rear
      • There are up to 12 cupholders to ensure that you and your passengers always have convenient access to drinks. Available in the front middle armrest, door sides and the third-row armrest.
    • Front centre armrest and cupholders
      • The centre armrest conceals a host of conveniences. Fold back the upper section to reveal a handy storage space for CDs, sunglasses and other small items. It also provides rear seat passengers with a convenient table. Double cup holders in the front of the armrest ensure that refreshments are always easy to reach. These cup holders can be concealed when not in use. Here you’ll also find an AUX input and – depending on your choice of audio system – a USB port to connect your MP3 player to the vehicle’s audio system.
  • Driver's support

    • Cruise control
      • Conveniently operated from the steering wheel, cruise control allows you to drive in a more relaxed way without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. The car maintains the speed you choose until you turn off the cruise control or press the brake, accelerator or clutch. After braking or using the clutch, the car returns to its previous cruising speed at the touch of a button. After accelerating – for instance to overtake – your car automatically reverts to its previous cruising speed once you release the accelerator.
    • Trip computer
      • Operated via the indicator stalk, the trip computer shows current and average fuel consumption, how far the fuel will take you and average speed – helping you drive more economically.
    • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
      • We’ve all experienced that nasty little shock as we’re changing lanes and suddenly realise that there’s another vehicle in our blind spot. BLIS uses rear-facing cameras installed in the door mirrors to keep a lookout on either side of the car. As a vehicle enters your blind spot, this function can alert you with a lamp built into the front door post – left and right. Together with the door mirrors, this helps you assess the feasibility of a lane change. BLIS is activated once the car exceeds 10 km/h and reacts to almost any type of vehicle, including motorcycles. And BLIS maintains its vigil day or night.
    • Park assist sensors, rear and front
      • Activated when you engage reverse gear, rear park assist helps you when reversing into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers becomes a continuous tone as you approach an obstacle. Front park assist performs a similar function at the front of the vehicle – alerting you via the front loudspeakers.
    • Rain sensor
      • Once activated, the rain sensor can start the windscreen wipers as soon as it begins to rain or if water splashes onto the windscreen. For your convenience, it can also automatically adapt the intermittent windscreen-wiper function. Its sensitivity can be adjusted via a ring on the wiper stalk.
    • Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror
      • Ending the need to take your hand off the steering wheel and stop headlight beams shining in your eyes, the anti-dazzle function is stepless and returns to normal when it's no longer needed.
    • Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror with compass
      • This is a mirror that automatically adjusts itself to deflect the headlamp beams of the car behind you. When there's no light to dazzle you, it automatically readjusts to its normal setting. And to help you take a bearing, your direction is continuously displayed in the rear view mirror glass.
    • Illuminated vanity mirror
      • Fitted in the sun visor, lights come on when you open the vanity mirror cover – convenient and practical. Available for both the driver and front passenger.
    • Power retractable door mirrors
      • In smaller garages or narrow lanes, being able to fold in your mirrors at the touch of a button is a real benefit. Thanks to their ground lighting you can avoid puddles and pavement edges.
    • Power windows, front and rear
      • The power windows have controls conveniently located in the door armrests. The front windows can be lowered or raised with a quick press or pull of a button, and you can lock the back windows from the driver’s seat if you’re travelling with small children. In this case, you’ll also be glad of the automatic anti-clamp protection, which will stop a window from closing on a trapped little hand.
    • Interior lighting
      • An entry light on both the driver and front passenger side lights the foot-well area upon entry into the car. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver, while the seven seater version also features two reading lamps for third-row occupants. The interior light will fade out 25 seconds after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked.
    • Speed dependant steering
      • Speed dependant power steering uses sophisticated, speed-sensitive technology to regulate the amount of power assistance a driver needs. At highway speeds, steering is firmer and more immediate. When parking or in slow traffic, steering is light and effortless.
    • Headlamp level adjuster
      • The headlamp level adjuster allows the driver to lower or raise the angle of the headlight beam by turning a dial on the instrument panel. This is particularly useful when driving at night with a full load.
    • Extra power outlet
      • Neatly integrated at the rear end of the tunnel console, the extra power outlet can provide electricity for a phone charger, laptop, game console, DVD player or other portable electronic devices.

    Communication

    • Bluetooth® handsfree system, integrated
      • Bluetooth® technology enables a mobile phone to be connected wirelessly to the infotainment system in your Volvo. Once configured for a mobile phone, the system automatically recognises your phone as you enter the car. And as you climb in and out of the car, the system automatically allows you to switch freely from the phone to the handsfree system and back again. With Volvo’s integrated Bluetooth® handsfree system you conveniently operate your phone using the buttons on the steering wheel or the centre console keypad. What's more, you can stream music from your mobile phone or a media player and listen to it through the cars audio system. The Bluetooth word mark and logos are owned by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and any use of such marks by Volvo Car Corporation is under license. Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners.
    • Road and Traffic Information (RTI)
      • Volvo’s GPS-based RTI navigation system offers both voice guidance and graphic navigation all the way to your destination. Via TMC (Traffic Message Channel) radio data broadcasts, RTI also lets you know if there are traffic obstacles en route and recommends an alternative. Extremely swift and precise, this new generation RTI features a hard disk drive covering maps for major parts of Europe. The system is fully integrated in your Volvo and is easily controlled from the steering wheel or optional remote, and the screen is positioned so you can keep your attention on the traffic. You can choose between two operating modes – Easy and Advanced. When RTI is not needed, the screen is hidden inside the dash. To help you keep track of new roads and points of interest, you can join our MapCare programme for two free map updates.
    • Volvo On Call and smartphone app

This engine is mated to Volvo’s all-wheel drive with Instant Traction™ and a six-speed Geartronic automatic.

    Transmission

    • Six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission
      • For the best of two worlds, there’s the six-speed Geartronic – a responsive automatic that’s ideal for relaxed driving, tough conditions or towing. This also allows manual gear shifting so you can maintain a lower gear to bring up the revs or for the added assistance of engine braking. A special winter setting make sit easier to move off and maintain a grip on slippery surfaces.
    • All-wheel Drive (AWD)
      • The advanced AWD technology with Instant Traction™ helps increase driving stability and traction on all road surfaces, in all weather conditions. It has an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels, the throttle, engine torque, engine speed and the brakes. As driving conditions change, wheels with the best grip get the most power. When a tyre loses traction, power is reduced to that wheel and instantly transferred to the more sure-footed wheels.

    Chassis & Steering

    • Chassis
      • The Volvo XC90’s all-road capability is based on generous ground clearance (218 mm), a comparatively low centre of gravity and an advanced chassis. The rigid body enables optimal suspension performance, balanced handling and a high level of comfort. Front and rear suspension interact to provide stable braking and smooth steering. In a curve, the rear wheels have a slight steering facility for added stability and steering response.
    • R-DESIGN sport-tuned chassis
      • Stiffer anti-roll bars help keep the Volvo XC90 R-DESIGN flat through hard turns. Firmer shocks improve body control and amplify road feedback. Only for the Volvo XC90 R-DESIGN.
    • Automatic levelling
      • When you tow or carry a heavy load, automatic levelling adjusts the rear suspension so the vehicle will maintain stability, as well as the correct ground clearance and headlight angle.
    • Speed dependant steering
      • Speed dependant power steering uses sophisticated, speed-sensitive technology to regulate the amount of power assistance a driver needs. At highway speeds, steering is firmer and more immediate. When parking or in slow traffic, steering is light and effortless.
  • Inside

    • Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)
      • Volvo’s IAQS continuously monitors incoming air and will, if necessary, temporarily close external air vents to shut out carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone and nitrogen dioxide. When the air vents are opened, an active carbon filter protects the passengers from other harmful gases and unpleasant odours. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.
    • Cabin filter
      • Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

And when the dipped headlights are needed for illumination, they are automatically engaged by a twilight sensor. What’s more, the spoiler integrated LED lights also add to the distinct styling of your Volvo.
    • Advanced petrol engine emission control and diesel particulate filter
      • Going into action quickly after a cold start, Volvo’s advanced emission control eliminates between 95 and 99 per cent of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from petrol engine exhaust gases. And Volvo turbodiesels feature a particulate filter that removes about 95 per cent of the particles from diesel exhaust gases.
