  • UNIQUE 1800ES ON DISPLAY AT VOLVO CARS VISITOR CENTRE

    2013-01-21

This year 2013 marks the fact that the Volvo 1800 went out of production 40 years ago. This is given attention by Volvo Cars Heritage who is putting a truly stunning and unique 1800ES from 1973 on display in the Reception area of the Volvo Cars Visitor Centre in Gothenburg. The car will be on show until April when it goes on tour to various classic Volvo events.

This particular car – one of the last 1800ES to be built and beautifully painted in glowing orange – has only covered 460 km since it left the factory in 1973! It was originally shipped from the Lundby factory in Gothenburg to a US Volvo dealer who wanted to keep the car as new. And so he did. For almost 35 years as it came to be.

The orange colour has the code 113 and was more often seen on the Volvo 140 models than on the 1800. When Volvo introduced the colour, they claimed it was for safety reasons, i.e. visibility.

A couple of years ago it was put up for sale and a Norwegian Volvo collector fell in love with it, mainly because of its orange paintwork and the almost non-existing mileage. He bought it and shipped it home to Norway. There it ended up together with a handful of other Volvo cars, painted in the collector’s favourite colour, orange!

The car has still not been used on the road. So far it has only been driven in first and second gear when being loaded and unloaded in connection with different events. This has resulted in a total mileage of only 460 km – in 40 years. The passenger seat has never been sat in and every original label is still in place. Even the paper stickers on the exhaust system are intact. On the rear plate holder, the car still carries its original 1973 old type Swedish export license plate with number E9901. This type of plate was replaced by the current type in the year 2000.

The more you look at the car, the more stunning and fascinating it appears. A great example of a great design; a great model of a great make. Volvo 1800ES 1973. A perfect piece of the Volvo Cars heritage.
