Children, who have outgrown the rearward-facing seat, are shorter than 135 centimetres and who have not reached the age of ten, should use a booster cushion. The main reason for using a booster cushion is not to help the child to enjoy a better view, but rather to achieve the right belt geometry. The booster gives the child an increased height and directs the safety belt over the stronger parts of the body during a crash. The less slack there is, the better the belt will protect your child.


Research shows that it doesn’t matter if the belt is partly on the child’s neck. It may not look very comfortable, but it certainly won’t strangle the child if there is an accident. The risk is much greater if the diagonal belt is worn too far out on the shoulder. This could allow it to slip further down the arm in the event of an accident. The child should never travel with the diagonal belt under both arms. In a crash, the child would be thrown further forward, with the risk of hitting some part of the car interior.


Volvo Cars is one of the few car makers who designs baby and child seats, made for and tested in their own cars. We provide a range of restraints to meet the different needs of babies to 12 year olds. These seats are appropriate for children of: Age: 4 years – 12 years or 135cm Weight: 15 kg - 36 kg.

Allows the child to sit high enough for both the safety belt and head restraint to provide proper protection.


Keep in mind

All children must be properly restrained. Always.

Children must never be placed in the passenger seat if the airbag is active.

Older children should use a booster cushion until they are 135 centimetres tall and at least ten years old.

Keep in mind

The lap section of the belt must always be worn as low down as possible, and not across the stomach.

The diagonal section of the belt should sit firmly across the shoulder and chest. It does not matter if the belt touches the neck.

Never place the torso belt under the arm or behind the back.

Remove any slack after you have fastened the child’s safety belt.

At a speed of only 40 km/h (just under 25 mph), a child who normally weighs only 30 kg (66 pounds) will suddenly weigh the equivalent of a tonne in the event of a collision with an unyielding object.

If that child is unrestrained in the back seat, he or she risks serious injury or even death if the car collides head-on.

Using a booster cushion, the child runs an approximately 75% lower risk of being injured compared to being unrestrained.

When your child outgrows the child safety seat it’s time to sit on Volvo’s booster cushion

This ensures the right position for the safety belt to fit properly

and makes the journey more comfortable.

The adjustable backrest gives extra support and protection

for the back and neck and can be tilted for sleeping.

Of course children shall travel as comfortable and safe as adults.

To further improve safety for children we have reinforced the side-impact protection system

with a stronger body structure and extended inflatable curtains

We have also developed the world's first height-adjustable integrated booster cushion

We recommend that children weighing between 15 and 36 kg should be seated

and securely belted on a booster cushion.

This helps position children at the right height for the safety belt to work properly.

Volvo's new two-stage integrated child booster cushion

helps add protection as well as comfort and convenience.

Because children come in different sizes,

the booster cushion can be adjusted in two heights.

Smaller children will enjoy the elevated seating position which gives them a better view.

And when the children are happy, the driver can concentrate more on driving.

As the children grow, just lower the booster cushion to suit the needs of an older child.

This also makes it more easy to convince the child to actually use the booster cushion


Both seat heights will help optimize the safety belt geometry

Together with the safety belt load limiter

this will help reduce the strain on the neck and chest in an impact.

And when the booster cushions are not needed

they're easily folded into the rear seat cushions.

The upper setting is designed for children measuring 95-120 cm

and weighing between 15 and 25 kg while the lower setting is intended for children

between 115 and 140 cm in height and weighing between 22 and 36 kg.

The instinct to protect our children is deeply imbedded within us.

It's an instinct, born of love.

In a few minutes this car will travel at a speed of 40 mph (64 km/h)

straight into this solid barrier.

In the car will be two children

One child that is 18 months old, and one child that is 3 years old.

My personal motivation to study this subject, began when

my sister was pregnant and I began asking questions like

How effective is the seatbelt during pregnancy.

How should it be worn and what is the effect on the mother and baby in a crash

This 18 month old child will be a part of our crash test.

It is one of our crash test dummies that has been calibrated to make sure all the data is gathered correctly.

To answer some of these questions we built Linda.

Volvo's first computer model of a pregnant crash test dummy.

The expectation is that in the future

Linda will answer many questions like the one's I've raised.

The test was very successful.

Everything indicates that the children in the car are completely unharmed.

A rear facing child seat in a safe car is the safest way to travel.

Volvo has more than 35 000 accidents registered in its database

and except in one extreme case, no child has been killed in a rear facing safety seat.

But what we know right know is that it is imperative to wear the seatbelt

during pregnancy, at all times and to wear it correctly.

To wear the belt correctly, the torso belt needs to run in between the breasts

and to the side of the abdomen and the lap belt must be as low as possible under the belly,

sitting on the left and right pelvic bones.

Rear facing seats are the safest ones. Children should be facing backwards for as long as possible

at least until they are 3-4 years old

When the child gets too big

it is time to start using a front facing booster seat

The idea is that the seat belt should be fastened over the hips or thighs

rather than over the stomach, and the torso belt should be positioned over the shoulder to keep the child as safe as possible

But what's important to remember is that

it's not only us performing research that is going to safe lives

It's relaying the knowledge we gain from the research today

to parents and insuring that they utilize this knowledge to safe their children's lives
