The Volvo S60 Concept – unpretentious yet dynamic
Interior elegance
Making the wheels go round
The Volvo S60 Concept Car gives a good indication of what the brand new Volvo S60 will look like when it is introduced during 2010. It also shows that the Volvo Cars design team has cranked it up a notch when it comes to the development of the products’ DNA.The design of the car is elegant, natural and flowing. The lines do not stop abruptly, but simply seem to continue on. The slim roofline and window graphics are accompanied by an entirely new lateral shoulder line, forming a gentle double wave. The rear doors open up sideways along the body of the car to its end position by the rear wheel, simply by pressing a button. The angled headlights that flow up into the sculptural bonnet combined with the lower air intake’s reverse trapezoidal shape, reveal an almost animal-like expressive face. These, and other, inspirational touches such as the bulbs in the headlights, which are sculpted as two miniature Viking longboats sailing side by side, are details that make the car what it is – dynamic.
Design Director Steve Mattin and his team have truly been inspired when it comes to the interior of the car. The main feature is undoubtedly the floating centre stack, handmade out of solid Orrefors crystal. Like a calm, gentle wave it floats from the instrument panel all the way to the rear seat backrest. The floating theme recurs in the car’s slender, lightweight seats, which are attached to the lower part and inner ledge of the centre stack, which means that they do not actually touch the floor. The Scandinavian coastline and its salt- and sun-bleached wooden piers and driftwood served as inspiration for interior, such as the ecologically tanned leather, which covers the floor and lower part of the doors, and the genuine blond birch wood on the upper part of the doors.
The Volvo S60 Concept is equipped with a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology with 180 horsepower. Instead of injecting fuel the conventional way, into the manifold, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure. The GTDi technology in combination with a range of other features will help keep CO2 emissions to around 119 g/km. One such feature is Start/Stop which switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill. Another feature is the DRIVe-mode, which gives the driver the possibility of reducing fuel consumption through an economy mode that will limit selected electrical or mechanical systems.

The S60 Concept Car has received the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control, which now adapts driving speed to suit all driving conditions – from highway speed down to a complete standstill. A highly beneficial function in slow-moving queues.
A truly innovative safety feature is the Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake. This feature warns the driver if a collision is imminent, and if the driver does not respond to the warning the vehicle’s full braking power will be activated to avoid an accident. An invaluable feature for the unprotected road users as well as other vehicles.
Along with Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, the S60 Concept is also fitted with Pedestrian Detection – a safety innovation that can detect a pedestrian who steps out into the path of the vehicle. If the driver does not respond to the danger the Full Auto Brake will be activated in order to reduce the vehicle’s speed.
