THREE STEPS TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY. #TITLE#MOTION#ENDTITLE# We must minimize the emissions of fossil CO2 (which leads to climate change) and increase the energy efficiency of our cars. Continuous improvements within aerodynamics, rolling resistance, lightweight materials and drivetrain technology help us lower fuel consumption. To significantly reduce fossil CO2 emissions, we offer seven Flexifuel variants that run on E85 bioethanol. Another option is our three new, eco-designated diesel powered 1.6D DRIVe models with CO2 emissions from 99 to 118 grams/km. We have also introduced Powershift, a new fuel-saving dual-clutch automatic transmission technology. In our new Hybrid technology centre in Göteborg, we develop the next generation power trains for future Volvos. The goal is that we use hybrid technology in all of our car models. #TITLE#INSIDE#ENDTITLE# If you drive 15 000 km a year, you spend at least 24 hours a month in your car. We also know that more and more people are suffering from asthma and allergies. To ensure a healthy interior for you and your passengers, we test upholsteries and interiors in the Volvo Environmental Laboratory in Sweden. All upholstery materials and interior textiles also comply with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 an international benchmark for human ecological safety of textiles. All leathers are chromium-free they're tanned using vegetable or synthetic substances instead of chromium. And to meet high requirements on an allergy-friendly interior, we've developed the Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) together with the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association. #TITLE#LIFECYCLE#ENDTITLE# Already from the early stages of conception we've considered our cars' environmental impact: from design and manufacturing to useful life and recycling. For example, we've seen to it that our factories are powered by electricity produced by wind and hydropower and use energy and water responsibly. Our production facilities are certified under the global environmental standard ISO 14001, and we make sure that all our major suppliers meet our strict environmental standards. At the end of its useful life, every Volvo is designed to be 85% recyclable. We also offer re-manufactured exchange parts which substantially reduces the need for raw materials and energy.

How New York turns green.

Even when you read it, it is hard to believe, but New Yorkers on average emit only a third of the greenhouse gases of their other U.S. co-citizens. It's largely because New York is a transit-based city, where walking, hopping a subway or grabbing a cab are preferred methods of transport over owning a car. But still, there is much more to do. Last year, mayor Michael Bloomberg made a big promise: keep New York New York but cut greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2017. To get there New York has a list of 127 different initiatives grouped under a big umbrella called PlaNYC. #TITLE#GREEN CABS AND A GREEN CANOPY#ENDTITLE# In a city the size of New York, however, each good green change takes a lot of effort. Just to convert the city's iconic yellow cab fleet to better-mileage hybrids requires manufacturers to supply 300 new cars per month to the city up to the plan's deadline in 2012. And to soak up more CO2 and extend New York's leafy, green canopy the city plans to plant 1 million trees, about a 20 percent addition to the 5.2 million already on city streets and in parks. #TITLE#NY BUILDINGS ARE ENERGY HOGS#ENDTITLE# The biggest problem is the existing buildings, whose heating and cooling and other energy use constitutes 80% of the city's CO2 source. There are some initiatives already being taken for example the Mayor just passed a law making it illegal for larger retail business to leave their doors open if they are also letting air-conditioned air escape. This change is estimated to save each business $1,000 a summer and a (literal) ton of CO2. But the work of getting each building and its occupants to be more efficient is also daunting it requires a gradual change of codes, updating city facilities with better lighting or heating systems, trying to find the right rebates or incentives to aid landlords to do the same, and finally, working on energy sources. The Mayor would like to dot the city's harbor with wind turbines as one clean supply source. In the first year, 118 of the 127 initiatives were launched, with some visible results new bike lanes, new Green streets, new trees. As a tourist nothing is as frustrating as trying to figure out where to find a handy city bike rental, an organic restaurant, or a chemical-free dry cleaner in a strange city. Most 'best city' lists have a standard formula when evaluating potential cities. They take tried-and-true metrics such as infrastructure, economic vitality and the trendyness factor. Copenhagen is always doing pretty well. But it is the more subtle environmental and sustainability issues that have begun to feature prominently in urban quality of life. In those areas, Copenhagen shines. The lifestyle magazine Monocle found that in its ranking of the world's best cities, Copenhagen had an edge. #TITLE#BIKE CITY BACKGROUND#ENDTITLE# In terms of sustainable transport, the city has long had a bike culture. When you go into any school or business and ask how many people rode their bike today, we want 50 percent of hands to go up into the air, said Søren Bom of the City of Copenhagen. To do that we've got to do more of a branding campaign for biking, and make people even more proud of being on their bikes. One of the ways Copenhagen keeps making it better for bikers is improving the 'greenways' paths to connect suburban areas to the city, and creating bike 'buses' that group together cyclists with longer commutes. Between 10-12 percent of foods purchased are organic, and 45 percent of the municipal institutions' consumption is organic both of those are global records, according to the city's visitors bureau. Restaurants from the upscale 3-Michelin -starred Geranium to lower-key Cap Horn and BioM all promote not only their organic offerings but also local, Scandinavian specialties. There are also a handful of eco-hotels and spa facilities. All these features helped Copenhagen beat out Munich, Tokyo, Zurich and Helsinki for the top 'livability' spot - not only due to its great design and eco-credentials, but also because its inhabitants simply recognize and demonstrate that its is both green and cool. #TITLE#COOL COPENHAGEN FACTS#ENDTITLE# 35 percent of inhabitants now do their morning travel work, school commutes by bike. The 2015 goal is 50 percent. Three hundred kilometers of bike lanes thread the city, with 50 new kilometers on the way. A Volvo that can be fuelled with electricity from a standard wall socket will be a reality in 2012. Swedish energy company Vattenfall and the Volvo Car Corporation are launching an industrial joint venture partnership to introduce Plug-in hybrids on the market. The ground-breaking technology will considerably lower the environmental impact from traffic. In addition, owning a Plug-in hybrid vehicle will be convenient since you can fuel up at home and fuel costs are significantly lower. In January 2007, the Volvo Car Corporation and Vattenfall launched a joint project with the aim of testing and developing Plug-in technology. Now their cooperation is being taken to the next level. “We are investing in an industrial joint venture to series-produce Plug-in hybrid cars in Sweden in 2012, cars that can be powered by both electricity and diesel. This is an important business development for us and our partnership with Vattenfall allows us to take a giant step toward offering our customers cars with an even smaller environmental footprint,” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of the Volvo Car Corporation. Vattenfall and the Volvo Car Corporation believe that series production of Plug-in hybrid cars and the development of infrastructure can generate new jobs and help Sweden maintain its position at the cutting edge of advanced pro-environmental technology. #TITLE#The car can be charged at home#ENDTITLE# One of the major benefits of Plug-in hybrids is that they can be charged from a regular household wall socket. “We want to reinforce electricity’s importance in society and its key role in solving climate issues. Through this cooperation we hope to be able to speed up the introduction of electric cars. Together we are developing the next-generation technology based on Plug-in cars and various charging alternatives,” says Lars G Josefsson, President and CEO of Vattenfall. The development of the cars is being carried out and financed jointly by the two companies. The Volvo Car Corporation will manufacture the cars and Vattenfall will develop charging systems and supply the cars with electricity. #TITLE#Innovative environmental technology#ENDTITLE# Electricity is very well-suited as a power source for cars. An electric motor has a high efficiency rating and consumes roughly one-fifth the energy needed to power an engine that runs on fossil fuels. The purchase price of the Plug-in hybrids will be higher than that of cars with conventional technology. Batteries are still expensive but with the car running on electricity, its fuel costs will be cut to roughly one-third compared with diesel power. Vattenfall will offer customers the opportunity to sign an agreement for renewable electricity sourced specifically from windpower or hydropower, as an alternative to the regular mix of electricity sources. Lars G Josefsson sees many benefits from chargeable Plug-in hybrids, even in cases where the electricity does not come from renewable energy sources. “Through electric power, we avoid the emissions from each individual car. Instead of petrol or diesel, the energy is derived from a few large power sources and Vattenfall is working hard to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from all electricity production. In Sweden, virtually all Vattenfall’s electricity production is emission-free,” explains Lars G Josefsson. The Plug-in hybrid cars will be driven by a powerful electric motor fuelled by a lithium-ion battery. The battery takes about five hours to charge from a standard wall socket, and the battery is also charged every time the car’s brakes are applied. “Most car journeys are short trips, for instance to and from work. We will be able to offer a product that fulfils this transportation need. In order to cover longer distances as well, the car will also be equipped with one of Volvo’s fuel-efficient diesel engines,” says Stephen Odell. #TITLE#Demonstration cars on show this summer#ENDTITLE# In the summer of 2009, three Volvo V70 demonstration cars will be presented. The demonstration cars will be used to gather information about the wishes and demands that drivers may have on the new technology, to determine their driving habits and to establish how they want to charge their cars. Vattenfall will, among other things, test various concepts for high-speed home charging and also for charging stations in public places, where owners pay to fuel with electricity instead of petrol or diesel. The cars that are planned to go into series production in 2012 will feature somewhat different technology, but the launch of the demonstration vehicles is a step towards seriesproducing Plug-in hybrid cars specifically tailored to market needs. The Volvo S40 1.6D DRIVe featuring the new Start/Stop technology has scooped the top honour and been named Green Car of the Year at the prestigious 2009 What Car? Green Car Awards. The ceremony took place at London City Hall on Monday night and the award was handed over by Boris Johnson, the mayor of London. This is the yearly award from What Car?, Britain's biggest consumer automotive magazine and car buyer's guide. The Volvo S40 DRIVe beat the BMW 118d and the Renault Megane to the top spot in the Small Family category and then stormed ahead to achieve victory over all the other category winners, including the Audi A8 and MINI Cooper S, to be awarded the overall What Car? Green Car of the Year title. Offering exceptionally low CO2 emissions of just 104g/km and fuel consumption of just 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres , What Car?'s judges praised the S40 DRIVe's unique combination of low emissions, practicality, safety and driver enjoyment as key reasons for the win. Steve Fowler, What Car's editor, heaped praise on the car. He said: "Volvo's S40 DRIVe is one seriously appealing eco-friendly car. Its low emissions don't come at the expense of quality, safety or driver enjoyment and its great value, too. It's everything we look for in a Green Car of the Year." Upon receiving the award, Stuart Kerr, Volvo's Regional President of Europe said: "Volvo has a strong commitment to its environmental activities and we have worked hard to reduce the carbon footprint on all our cars by focusing on health, resource utilisation and the ecological consequences right through from production, use to disposal." "The recent launch of the DRIVe range enables Volvo to offer mid-sized cars with the same fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as competitor's small cars. For customers, this means that they don't have to compromise on anything when they choose a Volvo. This highly important award is recognition of Volvo's desire to build the most fuel efficient cars possible," he concluded. #TITLE#Start/Stop in detail#ENDTITLE# In order to reduce CO2 emissions to 104 g/km, the new S40 DRIVe have been equipped with a Start/Stop function. When the driver puts the gear lever into neutral and releases the clutch while at a standstill, the engine switches off. The next time the driver presses the clutch, the engine starts up again. Volvo's Start/Stop system also continuously monitors the comfort levels in the cabin and automatically reactivates the air conditioning if, for instance, the temperature increases in the passenger compartment. This innovative monitoring system has been made possible due to an additional small battery which supports the larger battery by providing extra power. Thanks to this extra battery, Volvo's DRIVe models also feature particularly quick and smooth start-up. The audio system also remains unaffected when the starter motor is activated. This distinguishes Volvo Car's solution from other systems offered by the competition. The standard larger battery has also been upgraded to handle up to 175,000 Start/Stop cycles. The Start/Stop technology is also available in the Volvo C30 SportsCoupe and V50 Sportswagon DRIVe models. About 120 European journalists test-drove Volvo Cars’ DRIVe models last week. All were impressed by the cars’ fuel efficiency. A Swiss journalist managed to drive an XC60 with an average fuel consumption of 4.9 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres! Journalists from 17 countries visited Sweden’s capital city Stockholm last week to spend a whole day test-driving Volvo’s DRIVe range outside city. The models provided were the XC70, XC60, V70 and the C30, S40 and V50 – the last three featuring the start/stop function. After receiving information from CO2 director Peter Ewerstrand and Ulf Nordström it was time to put Volvo’s economical cars to the test. Because it was economy that was the whole point of the test-driving session. “Everyone was immensely impressed over how little fuel the cars used. The journalists were competing with each other over who could achieve the lowest fuel consumption,” says Louise Anderberg Malmström, Manager Brand Communication Public Affairs, who was responsible for organising the test-drive. A journalist from Swiss magazine Le Matin took first prize. He drove an XC60 that consumed 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres (its official fuel consumption is 6.0). He even succeeded in driving a V70 at an average fuel consumption of 3.7 over a distance of 100 kilometres, and a C30 with start/stop function at 3.2 litres/100 km. #TITLE#1940 kilometres – on one tank of fuel#ENDTITLE# Three out of 6000 people were selected for Volvo Cars’ Portuguese sales company’s competition to see who could drive furthest in a Volvo C30 DRIVe on a single tank of fuel. The winner drove from Lisbon to Lille – 1937.7 kilometres. The "Volvo DRIVe Challenge", which was the title that Volvo Car Portugal gave to the competition, produced amazingly impressive results. The three finalists were each given the choice of driving to Barcelona, Bordeaux or Andorra on a single tank of fuel in their C30s. All chose Bordeaux – and all three continued on past the city with plenty of fuel to spare. All three reached Paris. The winner set his sights on Brussels in Belgium, but his fuel finally ran out near Lille. Average fuel consumption was 2.5 litres per 100 kilometres! “We showed the world how far a C30 with a full tank can drive,” says Aira de Mello, PR Director at Volvo Car Portugal.

Volvo Cars has now undercut the magical 100 grams carbon dioxide limit for the first time ever. The new Volvo C30 DRIVe was presented at the car show in Frankfurt. Featuring Start/Stop technology, the latest version of the Volvo C30 DRIVe can achieve up to 74.3 mpg. Accordingly, it emits just 99 grams of CO2/km. "This puts us among the absolute elite as regards low CO2 emissions," says Peter Ewerstrand, head of CO2-related issues at Volvo Cars. Since the spring, the Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe has been available with an advanced Start/Stop function that switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill, for instance at traffic lights or in traffic queues. This together with a number of improvements in the areas of engine management and combustion technology brought the C30 DRIVe down to 104 grams of CO2/km. Just a few months later, however, even greater advances are being made. "For the first time in Volvo's history we have a car that emits as little as 99 grams of CO2 per km," says Peter Ewerstrand. "We've left absolutely no stone unturned in our determination to reach this target, and it's wonderful that we succeeded," he continues. The Volvo C30 DRIVe with Start/Stop can thus cover a massive 857 miles on a single tank, 52 litres, of diesel. The new model will appear on the market towards the end of this year.
