Sailing at grass roots
 The Optimist class is a rearing-ground for young sailing hopefuls, giving them the opportunity to compete in sponsored events right across the UK. Team Volvo for life sailors Ben Ainslie & Nick Rogers have both been previous Optimist National champions they will be representing Team GBR at this summers Beijing Olympics.
The Volvo Musto Optimist Championship has been running for a number of years in conjunction with the International Optimist Class Association (IOCA). The championship consists of three major events with up to 300 young sailors competing at each event. The top 10 sailors from these events qualify as the UK representatives for the Optimist Worlds Championship.
