CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID — AND CHANGE IT REGULARLY
Things happen. Balls bounce out in the street, animals run across roads, people get lost in thought and stop paying attention. That’s why we at Volvo put so much effort into offering the safest possible brakes – and that includes giving you the highest brake fluid quality and performance.
Brake fluid has to cope with a lot. It has to stay liquid in really cold climates. It shouldn’t corrode metal, plastic or rubber parts of the brake system. And it has to withstand high temperatures generated when braking.
Volvo uses DOT 4+ brake fluid with a high boiling point (min 195°C), which can better withstand the heat during braking.
However, it is important to know that brake fluid, over time, absorbs water – which lowers the boiling point. This can greatly affect the performance of your brakes and dangerously increase braking distances. Therefore, it’s important to change the brake fluid with regular intervals – in most cases two years is the recommended interval.
