In Sweden, good design is a way of life. We start by working out what people need. What will make their lives easier. So with the all-new Volvo XC90, we decided to reimagine the luxury SUV. To use technology to simplify, not complicate. To be smart and intuitive, not ostentatious. Because we enjoy finding elegant solutions to complex problems.

We come from a land of extreme weather and landscapes, so we know just how important comfort is. So the interior of the XC90 is a haven of sophistication. As Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president design, explains, “It’s a place that makes you feel so comfortable you are reluctant to leave.”

By contrast to the world outside, the interior of the XC90 is always calm and relaxing. Natural materials, like its Nappa leather and birch wood make it warm and inviting, while the intuitive Sensus touch screen makes controlling everything, from the XC90 sound system and heating to the navigation, effortless.

The interior of the all-new Volvo XC90 is a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A place to connect with the world on your own terms. A place without clutter, because clutter clouds the mind. That’s why we believe that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.

A new kind of sophistication

From the forest to the dashboard

Swedish design is about honesty, so we only use the most exceptional natural materials. It’s why we handpick all of the wood for our interiors, instead of leaving it to chance. It’s also why one of the woods we use is flame birch, found only in remote forests in northern Sweden and Russia. Its name comes from the distinctive patterns in the wood that are a result of the extreme temperatures and harsh winds.

After it has been selected, the wood is cut into thin layers called veneers that are then stained and treated – a labor-intensive process that’s done by hand. It’s not something a machine can do, as Anders Bergstrom, interior design director, explains:

“The wood gets molded and sanded by hand, and then it is dyed. I can imagine a lot of people just think that these cars are so technical. Of course they are. But a lot of things, like the leathers and the woods are handcrafted." The wood trims have been fit to the dashboard in a herringbone design – something Bergstrom calls the book cut. “There’s a split in the wood in the middle of the car. It gives a good sense of craftsmanship."

Leather

Hands-on from start to finish

The semi-aniline leather we use for our seats has far less surface treatment than leather used in other premium cars. Not only does this make the seats feel softer and more natural, it also means that they wear better and last longer. After tanning and curing the hide, the leather is tested for thickness, strength, abrasion, flexibility and resistance. The leather swathe is then sent to Volvo’s seat manufacturer where it is cut, colored and stitched by hand to ensure the best possible quality.

"The leather seats in the XC90 are handcrafted using beautiful Nappa leather from Elmo in Sweden and Bridge of Weir in Scotland, for unparalleled quality you can see and feel.“It’s amazing actually, there are real people sitting and sewing all day,” says Bergstrom with pride and enthusiasm. “The steering wheels as well, with people just stitching by hand. Some of it is done using sewing machines but some details can only be made by hand. That’s true craft.”

“At Volvo, we have a distinctive zig-zag stitch that is a little bit more demanding than the one used by other car companies. That’s why we do it by hand. The higher up you go in the luxury segment, the more time you spend on the hand-crafted elements.”

Our landscape shaped the color palette of the XC90. In a country that is dark most of the year, we value our light. That’s why interiors tend to maximize available light.

Our goal has always been to create the world’s most comfortable seats. And it’s a reputation we intend to keep. It’s why we employ technicians dedicated solely to seat design, and why we use real people to thoroughly test each new design. It's also why you’ll discover that every seat in the all-new Volvo XC90 is comfortable, no matter who’s sitting in it.

Each handcrafted seat in the XC90 combines comfort, support and style in a beautifully crafted package; so don't be surprised if, after a long journey, you arrive feeling fresher than when you set off. The seat’s streamlined design also provides more interior space for adults and children alike in both the second and third row seats - making the all-new XC90 a genuine seven-seater, luxury SUV. Combined with theater-style seating, your passengers will have as good a view of the road ahead as you do.

Frederick Hessel, the man overseeing the seats in the XC90, explains: “Our seats, for example, are available with adjustable side bolsters and ventilation. We also have a ‘Contour (Sport)’ seat with added support on the side of the leg extension cushion.” But the seats wouldn’t be truly “Volvo” without great functionality too – the second row is comprised of three individual seats that can be reclined and folded, and the third row can be power folded for convenience – all from the comfort of your driver’s seat.

Swedish Air

A breath of fresh Swedish air

Imagine a car where the air inside is cleaner than the air outside. A car that actively removes harmful pollutants and toxins from reaching the people inside. A car that can even close the incoming air ducts if it detects particularly high levels of pollution. That car is the XC90. Our new climate control system uses the biggest active carbon filters ever fitted to a car to purify all incoming air as well as the air that’s being recirculated. A sensor can determine how dirty that air is and, if pollution levels are high, it can close the ducts to recirculate the air inside. The result is air is so clean; it’s like a breath of fresh air every time you drive.

The man responsible for the climate control system, Carl-Mikael Hjörne, explains: “We’ve introduced four-zone climate so you get individual temperature zones for the four major seating positions in the car. Those in the back seat can control their own temperatures and rate of airflow, too. There’s even a separate air-conditioning unit for the third row of passengers. So every seat in the XC90 can be kept as comfortable as the next.”

The climate system in the XC90 marks a significant step forward – the system has more adaptability, superior air filtration, quieter operation and better provision for those in the third row. Or to put it another way, it’s the best climate control system that Volvo has ever produced.

We didn’t just reimagine a car; we reimagined how you interact with one. We replaced dozens of buttons and switches on the center console with intuitive voice control, thumb controls on the steering wheel and a large touch screen. And we did it all, because the all-new Volvo XC90 is designed around you.

Sensus is our unique way of enabling you to communicate instinctively with your car and the digital world beyond it. Just a word, a touch or a swipe is all it takes for Sensus to give you the help, information and entertainment you want.

In the XC90, this information can be displayed on an optional head-up display right on the windshield, so your eyes and your attention are always on the road ahead. Combined with the stunning, nine-inch, touchscreen display in the center console, you can effortlessly enjoy everything from music to navigation. And the all-new Volvo XC90 is the very first Volvo to have it.

Unlike the center consoles of other luxury SUVs,which are packed with buttons and switches, the center console of the XC90 has just seven physical buttons. It makes for a clean, uncluttered interior where confusion takes a back seat. Because, we believe simplicity is the ultimate expression of sophistication.

Breaking from tradition, the touch screen is placed vertically in the cabin. This has many benefits, as Jens Henriksson, who was lead engineer for the touch screen, describes: “The advantage of a portrait layout is that, for instance, with a map you can see more of your route. And you can see more on one screen without having to scroll down.” Features that were once controlled using a variety of complicated buttons on the center console can now be intuitively controlled from a single touch screen system that easily adapts to your needs. For example, you can view all four tiles on screen at once, or, if you need more information on just one, like navigation, you can expand its tile to fill the entire screen. And you can customize a tile to display one of the features you use most, like weather. You can even use the 360-degree cameras to give you an overhead view of the car to make driving the XC90 even easier and more relaxed.

“Using the screen is so logical that it will become part of your muscle memory very quickly,” explains Dr. Peter Mertens, Volvo’s SVP of research & development.

“The touch screen is super-intuitive and easy to operate.”

Voice control

As intuitive as a touch screen is, we’ve taken ease-of-use one step further with a voice control system that can understand natural speech.

With the press of a button, you can tell the XC90 to program the navigation, play a song, call someone, turn up the heating or ask it to read out your text messages. You can even use nicknames to call up your favorite band. So you’d only have to say, “Play the Boss,” and before you know it Bruce Springsteen will be bellowing out of your stereo. You don’t even have to learn a command language to control it: just speak as you usually would and the system will understand what you want. It’s clever, without being too clever for its own good.

Nina Åberg, interaction designer and function owner for voice control, explains the technology: “I don’t want to voice control anything that can be done with just a push of a button. I wanted to use speech to operate something that’s complicated and takes a lot of time for the driver to do.”

And because the all-new Volvo XC90 is fulfilling your every command, you’ll never have to take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road, which will help keep you and the people you share the road with safer.

“The voice control function is so good you can say, “Play the Boss”, and you’ll get Bruce Springsteen.”

Touch

From its software to the way you physically interact with it, we designed the touchscreen in the XC90 to be as easy and intuitive to use as possible, because we designed it around you. So unlike touchscreens in other luxury vehicles, the sensitivity of the touch screen in the XC90 means you can use it even when you’re wearing gloves. “It’s possible, because we use infra-red touch technology. In front of the screen, there’s an infra-red light pattern and when you put your finger within this field, it corresponds to a touch,” explains Jens Henriksson, touch screen manager.

Control

“It’s an anti-reflective surface and we have a number of technical solutions to avoid glare,” says Jens Henriksson. And because the screen is dynamic, virtual buttons can be made to appear bigger, making them easier to see, and that makes them easier to use.

Connect

The Volvo XC90 can take advantage of everything from music streaming to Apple iOS devices using its touch screen display. You can browse the Internet, use apps to find music in the Cloud and turn your car into an onboard WiFi hotspot. It’s your world connected. And it’s launching in the all-new Volvo XC90.

Head-up Display

How can we make driving smarter? With the optional head-up display, the most important information is always right where you need it, on the windshield, so you never have to divert your attention from the road.

Our head-up technology in the XC90 will make it possible for you to safely experience information, like navigation, speed and incoming calls. The messages are semi-transparent and appear to hover in the air about 6.5 feet in front of the car.

Apple CarPlay inside

The all-new Volvo XC90 is the first Volvo car to feature CarPlay. Experience iOS in the 9-inch touchscreen and access your iTunes, contacts, Apple Maps, iMessage, and even Siri. Connect your iPhone* and interact with it using the in-car display, where it becomes a seamless part of your Volvo. Your iPhone becomes one of many car features you control with a click of a button or the sound of your voice. And Siri becomes the perfect driving assistant, allowing you to control your iPhone with just a few words. Simply press the voice activation on the steering wheel to start Siri. Stay focused on the road and personalize your drive with CarPlay in Volvo.

Music and driving belong together. With CarPlay, you can listen to your favorite tracks on one of the top automotive audio systems in the world. We partnered with acclaimed British audio company Bowers & Wilkins to ensure the Premium Sound system in the all-new XC90 will delight even the most sophisticated audiophile. So whether you want to listen to rock on the radio, stream top 40 hits or play your favorite album, you’ll experience the best sound on four wheels.

As with everything we do, we started thinking about the kind of sound experience you would expect from a luxury car before we even sketched the first design.

This meant integrating the sound system into the very fabric of the design of the XC90 – not just bolting it on as an afterthought. Thinking about the best possible place for the speakers to maximize their effectiveness. Thinking about where to place the tweeters to bring out the highlights of the music. Thinking about how we could give every person in the car the same level of quality experience, no matter which seat they’re sitting in. Because we design our cars with more than just the driver in mind.

It’s difficult to express the feeling that good sound gives you. You just know it’s right, and even more so when it isn’t.

Faithful recreation of your music – whatever the genre – that’s what makes the sound system in the Volvo XC90 so special. That’s why we don’t focus on the numbers. Because while top-of-the-range Bowers & Wilkins system in the XC90 delivers 1,400 watts from 19 speakers, it’s what this translates into that’s more important. That’s why we tune all our audio systems by ear. We simply won’t leave a job this important to a machine.

World-first subwoofer

In creating the best sound system in the history of Volvo, we have also achieved a world first. A subwoofer is absolutely crucial to very high-quality, powerful bass tones but usually demands a compromise on space within a car’s cabin. But because the subwoofer has been integrated into the structure of the XC90 by being placed by the rear wheel arch, no space of any kind is sacrificed. It’s something that’s never been done. It’s called a “fresh air subwoofer” with an opening in the wheel arch that feeds air into the car, which means a larger volume of air can be pulsed. It enables extremely low bass tones for a much richer sound experience.

A unique sound experience

To create a truly spectacular experience, which replicates what you would experience in Gothenburg’s renowned Concert Hall in Sweden, we collaborated with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. After taking more than 800 individual measurements in the concert hall and, with some very sophisticated software, we were able to recreate the acoustics of the concert hall inside the Volvo XC90. We call it the Gothenburg Concert Hall mode, and along with two other modes, it really does redefine what you expect from an automotive sound system.

Using an innovative approach to deliver the richest listening experience possible, we have created an audio environment that is one of the very best in the world, inside or outside a car. To achieve this, we teamed up with Bowers & Wilkins to create the purest sound system in the industry. Together, we’ve created three different Room Modes that deliver very distinct audio experiences. This is just one of the unique features that sets the remarkable audio system in the XC90 apart – here is a sound system that will allow you to adapt your audio experience to fit not only the type of music being played, but also your mood.

We know that a premium sound experience is a crucial element of luxury driving.

A large part of the success of Premium Sound by the Bowers & Wilkins sound system is the result of precise placement of speakers throughout the car – the audio system has been tuned to suit the physical arrangement of the cabin in the XC90. It’s why the focal point of the dashboard is one center tweeter and one midrange speaker with a Kevlar cone, for cleaner, purer sound. And it’s why there is also a mid-range speaker with a Kevlar cone, one tweeter and one woofer in each front door. That’s repeated on the rear doors, and there are also speakers in the rear roof panel.

Our exclusive Premium Sound system by Bowers & Wilkins provides amazing sound, whether you like rock, jazz or hip-hop. It is that particular ability to deliver the power and the punch for bass riffs, but with the delicacy to render the softest nuances with pin-sharp accuracy. This attention to detail is what makes Bowers & Wilkins the perfect partner for creating an immersive and premium sound experience.

Studio

In Studio mode, the Bowers & Wilkins sound system faithfully replicates the intimate, focused acoustic experience that you might expect to find in a recording studio. This creates the experience of being right there in the room as the artist records their music.

Stage

In the Individual Stage mode, the sound system creates the sensation that you are seated in the front row with the artist delivering their performance just for you. It’s an exciting feature of the Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins, and one that delivers a unique experience.

Concert

In this mode, the acoustic design recreates the unique sound experience that you’d have if you were listening to your favorite performers live in a concert hall.

Possibly the world’s best sound system

If anyone knows how to recreate great sound quality in the Volvo XC90, it is Michael Adenauer. Our Volvo sound engineer previously worked as a music producer and recording engineer, so he understands what it takes to recreate a top-quality sound experience.

“It takes more than good speakers and amplifiers. You need to tune the system with a human ear. That’s what we’ve done with the XC90. We have several trained listeners at Volvo who do the sound tuning. And that’s the most important part, people with experience and the passion for music who know what makes a top quality sound system in a car.”

He’s also supremely confident when he says: “Our brief was to create the best sound system on four wheels.”

Adenauer says, of the music experience you can expect: “Close your eyes and imagine a stage that is five meters in front with a massive orchestra playing just for you. Our system recreates that the sound in the most natural way possible. No longer will you think, ‘How many speakers does it have?’ or ‘How many watts does the amplifier produce?’ When you get to this level of sound quality, you will just say, ‘Wow’.”

As Swedes, we think differently when we set out to create a new luxury car. We always start by asking ourselves what would you want and design around your needs. We’re also influenced by our unique landscape. We understand the need for comfort, so we wanted to make the Volvo XC90 a sanctuary. A home away from home. A place you can listen to your favorite music and unwind.

In Sweden, family and friends are really important. Everyone in the car is valued equally. That’s why we design our car to have a sound experience that’s as good in the back as it is in the front.

As Michael Adenauer describes: “If you’re sitting in the backseat we want you to feel that the singer is singing from the headrest in front of you. That you don’t have the feeling that the music is playing from the instrument panel.”

Choose the T5, 316hp T6, or the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid with around 400hp. Each of our XC90 powertrain options feature two-liter engines, which employ the same lightweight, four-cylinder, turbo-charged engine block. Like everything we do, we simply want to make your life easier. That’s why the Twin Engine comes with multiple distinct drive modes. All it takes is just a twist of the selector to choose a different mode. Sometimes you might want a more dynamic drive, while at others you may want to enjoy the silence of pure electric mode. You can even put the XC90 into an Off Road mode. This mode allows you to tackle poor-quality surfaces in total comfort at speeds of up to 24mph. An Individual mode allows you to personalize your all-new Volvo XC90, for a truly tailor-made driving experience.

A driving experience to suit your mood

Whether you want to drive in pure silence or enjoy performance that is beyond the realms of traditional electric cars, the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid allows you to change your car’s character in an instant. The three key modes are:

Pure

Travel on electricity alone in Pure mode and get power without compromise. This mode features plug-in hybrid technology you can charge up. The Twin Engine’s electric-only range will enable people to commute daily without using the gas engine – making the XC90 one of the cleanest, most fuel-efficient SUVs on the planet.

Hybrid

One of the issues surrounding pure electric vehicles is the limited range provided by even the most advanced batteries. The Twin Engine in the XC90 is a full hybrid, which means the gas engine is there to support you. In fact, the default mode for the Twin Engine is Hybrid mode, which uses the electric motor and gas engine, individually or together, depending on the driving conditions.

Power

The Twin Engine develops the power you might expect of a V8. By combining a powerful electric motor in conjunction with our supercharged and turbocharged gas engine, the result is a powerful around 400hp engine with fuel economy and CO2 emissions far lower than most comparable cars on the market.

One of the most beautiful features of the interior of the XC90 is a stunning gear lever made from exclusive Orrefors crystal glass. This striking piece of crystal is made in Sweden and is only available on the Twin Engine powertrain. Interior design manager Anders Bergstrom, who came up with the idea for a crystal gear lever, describes it as “a beautiful thing” that reflects light in different colors when the sun hits it.

Each piece is made by hand using glass-blowing and cutting techniques that stretch back centuries, so every piece of crystal is entirely unique to your Twin Engine XC90. Interior design director Robin Page says the idea for adding details such as the Orrefors crystal was “to connect a lot more with Swedish design."

Drive-E powertrains

Drive-E powertrains come with distinct driving modes that change the car to suit the driving conditions and your mood. For instance, Dynamic mode allows you to enjoy the full performance the XC90 has to offer by turning off the stop-start function, priming the gearbox for later gear changes and calibrating the engine and transmission to respond more quickly to your demands. With Individual mode, you can even tailor the XC90 to suit your style, so you can mix and match from the range of options available across the modes to find your perfect driving experience sweetspot.

Enjoying your all-new XC90 is even easier when you know that our latest IntelliSafe technologies are constantly working to help prevent accidents and protect you and your family in the event there is one. “There are IntelliSafe technologies working for you in all our cars, looking out for dangers and ready to intervene if necessary – you don’t have to do anything,” explains Martin Magnusson, Volvo Cars’ safety engineer. It’s almost like having your very own guardian angel.

City Safety

“City Safety scans the road ahead for other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians – no matter what the conditions.”

Our latest City Safety system can help avoid accidents where the speed between the Volvo and the vehicle in front of it is up to 31mph and mitigate the collision at higher speeds. We’ve optimized the system so it also works at night, even when visibility is poor. No matter what the conditions, City Safety constantly scans the road ahead of you for other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

If an accident is imminent, the City Safety system will give a red warning light on the windscreen in front of the driver, sound an alert and pulse the brake pedal slightly, as an alert. If you do brake, the system gives you full brake support. And, if for some reason you don’t respond, the system will activate full braking.

Pilot

Daunted by parking in the city? Don’t be. Whether you’re parallel parking or perpendicular parking, optional Park Assist Pilot, does all the hard work for you. As you drive slowly along the road, your car will find a possible parking space for you. For parallel parking, you only need a space 1.2 times the length of your car – a gap so small most drivers wouldn’t even dream of parking in it. Now just let go of the steering wheel. Just change gears, accelerate and brake just as needed, and watch the steering wheel turn as if by magic.

Aid

Lane Keeping Aid supports you if you’re about to stray outside your lane. First, the system detects if you’re driving proactively – for example, by using the indicator – or not. If you’re not, and you cross a lane marking, the system will gently steer the car back into lane. If the steering intervention is not enough, or if you veer into the other lane, the system will warn you with either steering-wheel vibrations or a warning sound – the choice is yours. You can also turn it off, if you wish.

Alert

As you probably know, reversing out of a parking spot can be tricky, because your vision can be restricted, making it difficult to see other vehicles crossing your intended path. To make it less stressful, we developed Cross Traffic Alert. This state-of-the-art system uses radar units inside each corner of the rear bumper of the XC90 to detect approaching vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at almost 100 feet. If a problem is detected, you’ll hear an audible warning from the left or right rear loudspeaker, as well as a graphic warning on the center screen. It’s all about making your life easier and safer.

360° Camera

Tight parking lots and narrow city streets need never again be difficult – with the optional 360° camera in the all-new XC90, you get an uninterrupted, bird’s-eye view of the car’s surroundings. Four hidden cameras on the sides, front and rear of the car, accomplish this. The system works at speeds up to 12mph and the cameras deliver crystal clear, high-resolution images on the center display.

Pre-activated safety belts

To be properly restrained and positioned in the event of a crash is essential. With our advanced Electrical Reversible Belt Retractor (ERR) we tighten the safety belts before a likely accident. Activation of ERR is based on the car’s intelligent detection system. The system works in different scenarios including frontal collisions, rear collisions, harsh braking, running into a ditch or over rough terrain. The belt will reset automatically after activation when the dangerous event is over.

Protective Safety

As proactive as our practical safety technology is, the first step toward creating an extremely safe car is designing maximum strength around the passenger compartment. Here, the XC90 excels with extended use of boron steel, which is one of the strongest types of steel in the world – we believe that protection of those inside the car is the highest priority. Together with the body structure, the safety system is designed to help protect the occupants in a crash. And now, activation of restraints along with other safety systems in the car covers more situations than ever before, including “run off road” scenarios. Seat belt pre-tensioners are also standard for all seating, including the third row. To reduce the risk of injury even further, advanced safety belt load-limiting technology is standard in the front seats. And to ensure maximum comfort, the safety belts in both first and second row are height adjustable.

Intersection braking

Intersection braking is the first technology of its kind in the world. Imagine you’re slowing down to turn off a main two-way road. You have to cross traffic approaching in the opposite lane – in case you don’t see oncoming cars (or they don’t see you), intersection braking will apply the brakes for you, avoiding or mitigating an accident. This type of accident is usually serious due to the speed differential of the colliding cars. The time window that the driver has to react is also extremely short. Hopefully, you’ll never need intersection braking, but if you do, it could be a lifesaver.

Built-in protection

Underneath the stunning, Scandinavian design of the front seats in the all-new XC90, lies another entirely new design. One that incorporates an ultra-strong steel frame to reduce injuries from side impacts, plus the latest development of Volvo’s unique whiplash injury protection system. All seven seats also have integrated protection with three point belts and pre-tensioners, which will stop you from “submarining” under your seatbelt in a frontal collision.

The front seats of the XC90 feature the world’s first energy absorbing seat cushions, which are specifically designed to help reduce spinal injuries in the event of both serious and minor accidents.

A flexible platform

The future of Volvo has a name. It’s called The SPA platform, and it’s what will help us design and build the next generation of Volvo vehicles, like the all-new Volvo XC90. Our three concepts show just how flexible the platform is.

The Volvo Concept Coupe, a contemporary Grand Tourer evoking the classic Volvo P1800, was the first example of our new design language.

Then came the Volvo Concept XC Coupe, which is designed for an active lifestyle, and the Volvo Concept Estate. All of these incorporate our philosophy that the right material should be used in the right place. For example, aluminum for lightness and boron steel for high strength.

Electrification

SPA was specifically designed to quickly adapt to future innovations, like electric vehicles. That’s why our new electrical architecture has been designed so that it will be easy to add new technology in fast-evolving areas such as microprocessor, sensor and camera technology without compromising the passenger experience. The battery pack is positioned so that it does not take luggage space away from you, or diminish the flexibility of the third row in the seven-seat version of the all-new Volvo XC90.

The all-new Volvo XC90 is not a refresh. It’s an entirely new car that’s designed and built from scratch to give you a very high level of driving pleasure, comfort and safety. The XC90 combines state-of-the-art engineering with electronic support systems that constantly adjust to changing road conditions and driving styles. The result is an in-control and sophisticated driving experience. And for difficult roads and poor weather conditions, All-Wheel Drive and Hill Descent Control help you to arrive at your destination with confidence.

Keep going with the All-Wheel Drive system with Hill Descent Control in the XC90. During normal driving, practically all of the power is sent to the front wheels – this helps to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The system can instantly direct up to 50 percent of power to the rear wheels. And Hill Descent Control provides smooth, controlled descent on steep, slippery roads without the need to use the brake pedal..

The key to our SPA architecture is the flexibility to meet the demands of modern car design — demands that include being able to tackle a variety of different terrain. By using Off Road mode (for speeds below 24mph) and technologies like our Hill Descent Control, you overcome the worst that Mother Nature can throw at you.

Auto Hold

When the Vehicle Auto Hold system is activated and the driver brakes the XC90 to stop, the brakes will remain engaged even after the pedal is released – when the driver decides to pull away and presses the accelerator, the brakes are released automatically. This provides an extra layer of safety, especially on hills, as the car won’t move until the driver takes a deliberate decision to drive off. It’s as thoughtful as it is clever.

An all-new, state-of-the art suspension

The Volvo XC90’s all-new front suspension incorporates a double wishbone design, allowing the tires to always maintain an optimal contact patch with the road, regardless of cornering angle. It’s technology like this that gives the XC90 superior steering response, handling and road holding, which makes for a pleasurable, engaging drive. This setup not only checks under-steer, but also reduces torque steer, helping you to stay in control.

Safety

We’ve also designed SPA to move the latest generation of cars ever closer to our Vision 2020, which states that nobody should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. For example, we’re now able to make much more use of ultra-high strength boron steel. Thanks to SPA, in the all-new Volvo XC90, the safety cage is made of 33 percent of this extremely strong material. Best of all, this strengthening adds nothing to the car’s weight, helping to maintain the dynamic handling of the XC90.

With the new, SPA-based generation of cars, we go beyond the distinction between active and passive safety, and seamlessly combine the two. Our Rear Collision Warning system, for example, uses its rear-facing radars to detect an imminent collision from behind, automatically flashing the turn signals of the XC90 at a higher frequency than usual to try to catch the attention of the driver in the approaching car. The system also tightens the safety belts in the front seats to keep you and your passenger in the safest position – firmly in your seat. And should the car already be at standstill, the system also activates full auto-brake to prevent the going into an intersection or the vehicle in front of you, reducing the chance of additional accidents.

The all-new XC90 First Edition’s subwoofer is integrated into the car by being placed by the rear wheel arch, which has never been done before, so no space of any kind is sacrificed. It enables extremely low bass tones for a much richer sound experience throughout the car.

We collaborated with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra to create a truly spectacular experience. Our engineers collected more than 800 individual measurements in the concert hall and, with some very sophisticated software, were able to recreate the acoustics of the concert hall inside the First Edition. The First Edition also has Volvo On Call, our state-of-the-art connectivity package. It features a smartphone app with which you can check on – and interact with – your car no matter where you are. Only 1,927 all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition cars are available in the world, as homage to Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson who founded Volvo in 1927. Each number is inscribed on the car and "First Edition" is inscribed on the key fob, and every car comes fully equipped. There is also a First Edition badge on the back of the car.

Only 1,927 first edition cars are sold exclusively online until November 9th, 2014 or until sold out. What you pay for online is the deposit, which gives you the right to buy an all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition with a unique inscription number. Full payment for the car will be completed at your dealership when you sign the car contract.

The dealer will handle the details, car contracts and process payments for your car. If you are looking for financing options or something that isn’t included in the First Edition package, you should refer to your dealer.

The first payment is to Volvo Car Corporation via credit card. It gives you the right to purchase a car with that specific number. Full payment of the car is handled via your dealer when the contract is being signed.

When you have ordered the car, you will receive an email notification and your dealer will contact you. From this point on you will also be a part of the First Edition program. Welcome!

When your car is ready it will be shipped to your dealer.

When you have ordered the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition you will become a part of our First Edition program.

How can I select a number?

You can explore numbers on the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition page www.volvocars.com/us/all-cars/all-new-volvo-xc90/pages/default.aspx#/pioneers/ and confirm number availability during the ordering process online. You will be prompted to choose from other numbers if your number is no longer available.

What if the number I want is not available?

If a number you want has been sold, you will have to pick another number. But it may also be temporarily unavailable if someone has selected that number and has started making the purchase. There is always a chance the person may not complete the transaction, and the number might become available again.

What does available, sold and reserved mean?

Available means that this specific number is available for you to buy. Sold means someone has already purchased that number. Reserved means that the number is temporarily unavailable, and has been reserved for someone, but it might become available again.

What is included when I buy my car?

The all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition comes fully equipped and according to a carefully selected specification. The $925 destination fee is included in the price. Taxes, title and registration fees are excluded.

Can I change or add anything to my car?

No, the First Edition comes fully equipped. You can always talk to your dealer about extended service programs, financing, insurance, and accessories.

What information do I need to provide?

You will have to enter contact information, as well as credit card information in order for us to process your order and for the dealer to contact you to finalize the purchase. All personal information is handled confidentially by Volvo Cars.

Why do I need to choose a dealer?

The dealer will be your point of contact after you have placed your order. The dealer will handle the car contract and address any questions you may have.

Will my specific dealer be available?

Yes, all Volvo dealers are able to assist you when purchasing the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition. When placing your order you will be able to see available local dealers.

How much does the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition cost?

Final Cost is $ 66,825. (The cost includes the $925. destination fee. Excludes taxes, title and registration fees).

Do I pay the full amount of the car online?

No, you only pay the $4,000. deposit online. The remaining cost of the car $62,825. is paid when signing the contract with your dealer. The contract has to be signed with your dealer as soon as possible, but no later than three weeks after you have placed your order for the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition.

What are the accepted methods of payment?

Payment online can be done by credit card (#VISA, #Mastercard).

Will my payment be secure?

Payment on this site is securely handled in cooperation with Volvo’s global partner Digital River World Payments (DRWP) and all communication with your bank is encrypted via SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).

When do I sign the contract?

The contract has to be signed with your dealer as soon as possible, but no later than three weeks after you placed your order for the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition. You need to bring your ID and the reference number that will be sent after the order has been made.

What financing options are available?

Please contact your Volvo dealer to find out which type of payment plan fits your needs.

What will happen after I’ve placed my order?

You will receive a notification email. Your dealer will then contact you to arrange all the details and set up a date to sign the contract. It’s important to bring your ID and the reference number when signing the contract. The contract should be signed with your dealer as soon as possible, but no later than three weeks after you have placed your order for the all-new Volvo XC90 First Edition.

When will I receive my order number?

When the car contract has been signed with your dealer, the order will be placed in the Volvo Cars ordering system. You will then receive an email with the order number. Note that it can take up to a couple of weeks before the order has reached the ordering system.

Can I export my Volvo to another country other than where I live?

No, import restrictions prohibit this.

When will my car be delivered?

Deliveries will start Spring 2015.

What do I need to bring when picking-up my car?

You must bring the order number and valid identification.

I miss the 80s, a time when the film industry flourished, a time when all forms and styles were developed and appreciated. During the 80s, I created the film “A Better Tomorrow”, which I believed achieved 80/100. This allowed me to continue to strive to create a movie that could become 100/100, no matter how much time and energy I’ll have to devote to it.

When I was 3, I fell so seriously ill that a doctor advised my father to give me up, and said he could still have another child. My father rejected the idea, and gave up almost everything he had to find another doctor to save me. Whenever I come across the number 3 it always reminds me of my father, and I want to love my kids with everything I have, just like him.
