Driver Assessment Centers can help select adaptive equipment for drivers or passengers. They can also write "prescriptions" for adaptive equipment, helping to assure that the installed equipment is eligible for Mobility by Volvo assistance. Many assessment centers also offer adaptive equipment training, and all provide useful information about ways to meet transportation needs.
Installers can supply information about wheelchair lifts and personal mobility devices for the elderly or physically impaired, without the need to visit an assessment center. Once an installer understands your needs and the kind of vehicle in which it will be installed, you should be able to obtain a written estimate before the job begins.
State laws vary. Some states require special training for drivers of vehicles with adaptive equipment and require reporting of physical conditions that could impair driving. It is important for you to know the law in your state. Most Departments of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State offices provide booklets or other information for drivers with physical disabilities.
