FEATURES & OPTIONS

Add something extra

  • Preventive safety
    Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Imagine that you’re in the passing lane on a high-speed motorway. Your car starts to weave; at first you’re baffled and then it dawns on you. One of your rear tyres is dangerously low on pressure – with any luck, you’ll make it safely to the hard shoulder. It’s a terrifying scenario, and one of the reasons why we developed our tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which uses sensors mounted in each tyre valve. If you’re travelling at 30km/h or more and any one of your tyres is underinflated you’ll be instantly alerted.

Inner and outer rear view mirrors with Auto Dim

One of the most annoying things about night driving is the blinding glare from other cars’ headlights. Our generously dimensioned door mirrors are made of chromatic glass that automatically dims to diminish glare from traffic behind you. The mirrors use an internal sensor to monitor light conditions and recognise glare from headlights. When this is detected, the inner and outer rear view mirrors will darken simultaneously to the exact degree necessary. Once the source of the glare disappears, the glass returns to its normal state automatically.

    Volvo Full-LED Active Beam

Journeys after dark have just become a lot more enjoyable – and safer – thanks to our new Full-LED Active Beam, available as an option. Advanced LED light technology allows a supremely wide and long light pattern – the light is more than twice as strong as conventional halogen lights. And helping you to see around corners at night, the lights turn up to 30 degrees in either direction with the steering. And with this system, you don’t need to keep flicking between low and high beam*, which is not only annoying – according to several studies, it’s also a major cause of night-time accidents. With our new system, your headlights stay on high beam all the time. When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system prevents dazzling the other driver by shading out only as much of your beam as necessary – no more, no less. Still, the LED headlights will illuminate the areas around the other car with high beam. The same applies to cars in front of you. The system can even recognise pedestrians and cyclists and avoids dazzling them, too – it can keep track of ten separate objects at the same time. And because the system is intelligent, the high beam shuts off when you enter a city, but if you drive past an illuminated sign – say a filling station or supermarket – it stays on so you can see what’s coming up. This means you benefit from safety as well as convenience. During daytime, the distinctive hammer shaped light-guides not only act as daytime running lights to make your car more conspicuous – they also flash in a warm colour when indicating. And when the dipped headlights are needed for illumination, they are automatically engaged by a twilight sensor. Contributing to improved fuel economy and lower running costs, the LED lights are extremely energy efficient and last the lifetime of the car without losing any luminance.

*Applies for Full-LED Active Beam technology. Cars with halogen lights shift automatically between high and low beam.

    Fog lamp with cornering function

At speeds of up to 40 km/h, the optional fog lamp with cornering function illuminates the area in which you’re turning at up to 15 degrees around the car for safer manoeuvring – for instance if you’re parking, turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night. To enhance your control during reversing in the dark, the cornering light activates on both sides to illuminate the area around your car.

    Emergency Brake light (EBL)

We’ve all been on the motorway when the car in front unexpectedly brakes hard and then you have to brake even harder, while praying that the car behind you reacts in time. Wouldn’t you like to have some way of making sure traffic behind knows there’s a problem? Well, that’s our Emergency Brake Light, which works above 50km/h and knows the difference between normal and panic braking. If it is a panic stop, the brake lights will flash at a rate of four times per second, which will telegraph a clear message to following traffic that there’s a potential problem ahead. Once you slow to below 10km/h, the brake lights stop pulsing and your hazard lights take over.

    Warning triangle

Conveniently fitted on the inside of the tailgate, the warning triangle is always easily accessible – no matter how much luggage you have in the load compartment. This lightweight wide-angle reflector stands upright to alert other road users even in strong winds and on slippery surfaces. It folds easily and stores in its own case.

  • Intellisafe Standard
    City Safety collision avoidance technology

We know that you want to a avoid collisions under all circumstances. And it only takes a moment’s distraction to find your self in just such a scenario. Using advanced radar and camera technology, our refined City Safety collision avoidance system constantly scans the road ahead for other vehicles as well as pedestrians and cyclists. Active from 4 km/h and during day or night light, City Safety gives you audible and visible warnings if you approach the vehicle in front too fast or if there are pedestrians or cyclists in your path. If you don’t react and a collision is imminent, full autobraking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. Simultaneously, the safety belts are prepared to help minimise the strain on your body if a collision can't be avoided. When the speed difference between your car and the vehicle in front of you is up to 50 km/h the system will help you avoid a collision by automatic braking. A collision with a cyclist can be avoided at speeds up to 50 km/h and a speed difference between your car and the cyclist of 40 km/h. At higher speed differences, the collision will be mitigated. Moreover, if you should make a turn in front of an oncoming vehicle in a crossing and the City Safety system detects a potential collision it will brake your Volvo automatically in case you don't. This is a Volvo worldfirst designed to help you avoid this type of dangerous collision.

    Auto brake at intersections

The scenario is common and can happen to anyone: you are about to make a turn in a crossing and don't notice there's an oncoming car at high speed. If you for some reason should make the turn despite these circumstances, the City Safety system in your Volvo will detect a potential collision and brake your Volvo automatically in case you don't. This is a Volvo worldfirst designed to help you avoid or mitigate this type of dangerous collision.

    Lane Departure Warning

It can happen so easily; you’re on a long motorway trip, or momentarily distracted and you wander briefly out of your lane. This puts you in danger of collision, or of simply going off the road. It doesn’t bear thinking about, but your Volvo can help with the Lane Departure Warning system. When you’re driving over 65km/h, a camera looks at the lane markings and can tell if you wander out of your lane. If you do, you will be alerted with vibrations in the steering wheel or an audible sound. But if you use indicators to signal a lane change, Lane Departure Warning will stay silent.

    Automatic braking after a collision

Helping to reduce the risk for more damage and injury after a collision – like hitting other cars or people – your Volvo brakes automatically when the safety belt pre-tensioners or an airbag are activated.

    Driver Alert Control

You know the scenario. Maybe you’ve had a long day at the office or possibly too many hours behind the wheel, and your attention begins to waver. This is a danger zone that we’ve given a lot of thought to, because distracted drivers cause up to 90 per cent of all accidents. That’s why we’ve developed Driver Alert Control to help distracted drivers at speeds over 65km/h. A camera looks at the road ahead while Driver Alert Control checks on your steering inputs to see how they compare to your regular driving style. If it senses that you’re driving more erratically, or there are signs that you’re drowsy or distracted, it’ll give you an audible warning and a message on the instrument panel suggesting you take a break.

    Road Sign Information (RSI)

With RSI you don't have to miss important road signs. A forward camera detects speed limit, "no overtaking", "no entry" and various types of supplementary signs. The actual sign is then displayed in the speedometer or in the head-up display – to help keep you constantly alert on current restrictions. If you want, RSI can also alert you with a visual warning if you exceed the speed limit, by flashing gently three times. This is easily set in the centre console menu.

    Speed limiter

Your Volvo will help to ensure that you do not speed limits. Set a speed limit of your choice or allow automatic setting using information from the Road Sign Information System. When you reach the set speed, your car will help ensure you not exceed that speed unless you depress the accelerator fully for a moment. In the driver's display, you can see the set speed.

    Electronic Stability Control

It can catch you out when you least expect it. And it really is a heart-stopping moment when, on a rain-slicked or ice-covered road, the tail of your car steps out as it threatens to go into a skid. Steer into that skid and you can end up fishtailing, and ultimately, going into a spin. This is precisely the kind of scenario that has made Electronic Stability Control one of the most vital safety advances of the past decade. The system looks at factors like what direction the car is travelling, how fast the wheels are rotating and how much steering lock is applied. Using all this information, Electronic Stability Control can detect a potential skid and take action to prevent it by reducing engine power and/or braking the appropriate wheels. It can also prevent the wheels from locking during engine braking or when changing to a lower gear in slippery conditions, using Engine Drag Control (EDC). To further reduce the risk of losing traction in emergency manoeuvres and corner with high lateral forces, the function Advanced Stability Control senses the car's roll movement and lateral acceleration. But Automatic Stability Control is also about giving you a rewarding driving experience, too, so when you’re cornering enthusiastically the car will feel even more dynamically stable. Another feature that means you’ll experience sharper turn-in to corners, less understeer, more powerful acceleration and more fun behind the wheel is our Corner Traction Control with torque vectoring. It works by braking the inside driven wheel if it starts to lose its grip through a corner, while sending the power to the outer wheel instead. Our new Understeer Control Logic is another innovative technology that further helps minimise understeer tendencies for more stable and dynamic cornering. And if you’re in the mood for a bit of performance driving, Electronic Stability Control has a Sport Mode. It cuts out the engine power reducing function and allows a controlled amount of rear wheel slip, as long as it senses that the driver is using the steering wheel and accelerator in a dynamic way and as long as it doesn’t go too far, in which case it will return to the normal Electronic Stability Control-function.

    Roll Stability Control

In the event of an emergency manoeuvre, Volvo’s Roll Stability Control can step in to help prevent the vehicle from rolling over. It features a gyroscopic sensor that registers the vehicle’s lean angle and rollover risk. If required, Roll Stability Control will cut engine power or brake one or more of the wheels just enough to reduce the centrifugal force and help regain balance.

Anti-locking brakes with Hydraulic Brake Assist and Ready Alert Brakes

When you’ve been caught by surprise by another car pulling out of a junction unexpectedly, that’s when large anti-lock ventilated disc brakes really come into their own – shorter stopping distances at times like this make all the difference. And if you find yourself travelling down a mountain road with the need to brake often and hard, you’ll welcome our brakes’ resistance to fading. But since there is always a risk of fade, your Volvo is prepared for this, too, with Fading Brake Support. This system gradually builds hydraulic brake pressure so that you always have reassuring pedal feel. But what if you find yourself having to brake in an emergency, and perhaps not applying the necessary pressure to the pedal? Well, we’ve developed Hydraulic Brake Assist, which ensures maximum braking pressure is applied hydraulically during a panic stop. Likewise, if you suddenly lift off the accelerator or sensors detect an obstacle in front of the car, Ready Alert Brakes instantly move the brake pads closer to the brake discs to reduce the braking distance. And Electronic Brake Distribution ensures that the right amount of braking goes to the front and rear of the your Volvo depending on where the load in the car is distributed and what the road conditions are. The braking system of your Volvo also contributes to your convenience when you're at standstill in different conditions. An automatic hold function ensures the brakes will be kept engaged after you have braked the car to standstill and releases the brake pedal. If the car is stopped for a longer period, the power parking brake takes over. And to make it easier and safer to starting uphill or downhill from standstill, the Hill start assist function keeps the brakes applied a short period after you have released the brake pedal until you press the accelerator – there's no risk the car will move while your foot moves from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

    Power parking brake

The power parking brake is easily engaged by pulling the control upwards. You can also set the parking brake to engage automatically every time you stop the engine. It is released automatically as soon as you press the accelerator with the transmission in the DRIVE or REVERSE mode – very convenient when moving off from steep gradients. You can also release it manually by pressing the control downwards.

  • Intellisafe Surround
    Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)

We’ve all experienced that nasty little shock as we’re changing lanes and suddenly realise that there’s another vehicle in our blind spot. That’s why we have developed Blind Spot Information System, BLIS, to give you total awareness. The rear-mounted radar sensors cover a large area behind the car and work in various sorts of weather and light conditions, day or night. As a vehicle enters your blind spot or approaches rapidly from behind, this function can alert you via a warning light in the door mirror glass – left and right. Together with the door mirrors, which include a wide-angle mirror on the driver side, this helps you assess the feasibility of a lane change. BLIS is activated once the car exceeds 12 km/h and reacts to almost any type of vehicle, including motorcycles.

    Rear Collision Warning

Being hit by a car from behind is one of the most common types of collisions. To help you avoid this type of accidents we created the radar based Rear Collision Warning system. If a vehicle approaches fast from behind and the system calculates that there's a risk of collision, it helps alert the driver in the approaching vehicle by flashing your hazard lights at a high rate. And if a collision still can't be avoided, the Rear Collision Warning system tensions the safety belts just before the impact to help keep all occupants safely restrained. To help reduce the strain on the occupants at the impact the system also activates full auto-braking if your car is at standstill.

    Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)

Reversing out of a parking space or anywhere else with restricted vision at the sides can be a tricky business. To make these manoeuvres easier and less stressful our Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) uses the rear radar sensors to alert you of crossing traffic from the sides. You'll be alerted by an audible warning from the left or right rear loudspeaker and by a graphic warning in the centre display. Alerting for approaching vehicles as well as for pedestrians and cyclists, CTA is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view might be limited.

  • Intellisafe Assist
    Pilot Assist

Driving in slow moving city traffic with a lot of stop and go can be quite a drag. Our Pilot Assist function relieves you from the need to constantly adapt the speed. Using radar and camera technology it automatically keeps the set speed and distance to the vehicle in front – already from standstill. While constantly monitoring your position between the lane markings it also adjusts the steering to help keep you within the lane in city traffic. From standstill, a press of a button or the accelerator is all it takes to make your Volvo smoothly tail the vehicle in front. Pilot Assist is active from standstill up to speeds of 50 km/h.

    Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Helping you to maintain your preset gap to vehicles in front at all speeds up to 200 km/h, the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is a supportive partner for a more relaxed driving experience on any journey. Just select the desired speed and the desired time gap to the vehicle in front. When the radar sensor detects a slower vehicle in front, the speed automatically adapts to that vehicle. And when the road is clear, the car resumes the selected speed. At speeds over 70 km/h ACC also makes overtaking more convenient: simply turning the indicator on, ACC will briefly accelerate your car for a more efficient and fast overtaking. Whenever you want, you can also select conventional cruise control.

    Distance Alert

Keep control of the distance to the vehicle in front and rest assured your Volvo will alert if you come to close. If the Adaptive Cruise Control is disengaged and a vehicle in front comes too close, the distance alert function activates a warning light to help you keep a proper distance. The warning light is displayed on the windscreen, from head-up LEDs on the dashboard or with a symbol if your car is equipped with the full-graphic head-up display.

    Lane Keeping Aid (LKA)

At speeds between 65 km/h and 200 km/h, Lane Keeping Aid can help prevent single-vehicle road departures as well as collisions caused by temporary distraction. This function uses a digital camera to register the lane markings and help monitor the car’s position on the road. If you get close to a lane marking and LKA senses you're not in full control, the system will gently steer the car back to help keep the car in the lane. And should you nevertheless unintentionally cross the lane marking you'll be alerted by haptic vibrations in the steering wheel or a warning sound. When you intentionally cross a lane marker using the direction indicators, LKA is not activated.

  • Protective safety
    Reinforced passenger compartment

Wherever you go in your Volvo, you and your passengers are surrounded by a strong protective steel cage. And it’s reinforced with a great amount of one of the strongest steel types available – hot formed boron steel. The extremely strong passenger compartment helps protect the people inside in all types of accidents. In a collision, the front and rear crumple zones help to dissipate the energy of the crash to reduce the impact on those inside the car, while in a side-collision, our Side-Impact Protection System distributes the crash force across a large portion of the car’s body to further reduce your risk of injury. In the event of a roll-over, the unique roof construction helps protect the occupants. And if there's a collision or roll-over, your Volvo unlocks automatically to make it possible to open the doors from the outside.

    Side Impact Protection System

We developed our unique Side Impact Protection System to help protect where you and your passengers are most exposed in the event of a side-collision. The steel framework of the car – including the front seat frames – is designed and reinforced to help displace the impact of a side-collision away from the occupants to other parts of the car body and help prevent intrusion into the cabin. The extremely strong side structure contains ultra-high strength steel and softer grades of steel to help withstand a severe side impact – even with a larger vehicle. The Inflatable Curtain for all the outboard occupants and the front seat side airbags interact with the Side Impact Protection System to help provide further protection. In the rear, the Side Impact Protection System and the Inflatable Curtain help protect the passengers in the outer rear seats including the third row.

    Roll-Over Protection System

To help protect passengers in a rollover situation, Our Roll-Over Protection System is activated by a sensor that monitors the vehicle’s lean angle. In the event of a rollover the safety belt pre-tensioners are activated for every seat to help keep passengers more securely in place. At the same time, the Inflatable Curtain deploys to help protect against secondary impacts.

    Restraint technologies

In a collision, Volvo’s restraint technologies interact to help reduce the impact. The safety belts with pretensioners activate within fractions of a second in the event of a collision or rollover and tighten the belt to help keep the occupants restrained. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled manner. Helping to optimise protection, the dualstage airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the collision. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. A knee airbag above the pedals further enhances protection of the driver and the brake pedal is released to help prevent foot and leg injuries. Side airbags in the front seats help reduce the risk of serious injuries in a side collision. In a collision or rollover, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear outboard occupants on all the three seat rows. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection for subsequent impacts.

    Automatic braking after a collision

Helping to reduce the risk for more damage and injury after a collision – like hitting other cars or people – your Volvo brakes automatically when the safety belt pre-tensioners or an airbag are activated.

Safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters

Three-point safety belts are the first line of defence when it comes to help protecting people during a crash. That’s why we introduced them in 1959. We also invented the audible and visual safety belt reminder and today, everybody in the car is reminded to fasten their safety belts before moving off. And in the information display on the instrument panel, you can check that the rear seat passengers have all fastened their safety belts and that nobody unfastens them during the trip. Pre-tensioners activate to tighten the belts within fractions of a second in the event of a collision. The safety belts at the first and second row's outer positions then release a little to give less strain on the upper body. This also gives optimal belt pressure reduction for children at the outer second row seats and at the integrated booster cushion. This also means that the driver and front passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled fashion. If your Volvo senses a critical traffic situation that could result in a run-off scenario or a collision, our run-off road protection system – a Volvo world-first– automatically tightens the front safety belts electrically to help provide maximum protection in the event of an accident.

    Run-off road protection

If you for some reason should run off the road, your Volvo will prepare the front safety belts for maximum protection. Our unique run-off road protection system is a safety world first that continuously scans the road ahead and behind you. If the system spots a potential runoff scenario or collision, it automatically tightens the front safety belts electrically to help keep you at a safe position. This together with a robust body structure and the other restraint technologies, helps provide the best protection in a collision. And to help protect your spine if the car lands hard in the terrain after an accident, the front seat frame and cushions have a completely new design that enables them to absorb severe energy loads.

Dual-stage airbags, driver and front passenger

In a frontal collision, the driver and passenger airbags help protect your head, face and chest. But because no two collisions are the same, the airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the impact. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. And if the impact is low enough that the airbags aren’t needed, the system will just deploy safety belt pre-tensioners if necessary.

    Passenger airbag cut-off switch

The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off, you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.

    Side airbags

In a side-collision, the side airbags inflate instantly to help protect the chest and hip. The side airbags are located in the ideal spot on the front seatback.

    Inflatable Curtain (IC)

In a frontal offset collision, a side impact or a rollover accident the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear passengers who are sitting on the sides, including the ones in the third row of the sevenseat version. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection in the event of secondary impacts.

    Collapsible steering column

The steering column is an advanced part of the safety system, with the upper and lower sections giving way in a controlled manner in a frontal impact to help protect the driver.

    Brake pedal release

To help reduce the risk for injuries on the right foot and leg when the foot is on the brake pedal, the brake pedal is released and moves down to the floor in the event of a frontal collision. This Volvo safety innovation is triggered by the same sensors that activate the safety belt pre-tensioners and airbags when needed.

    Energy-absorbing interior

All the panels and door sides are padded with energy-absorbing materials to help reduce the risk of injury to the car’s passengers.

Protective front seats with energy absorbing seat cushions

The front seats in your Volvo not only provide relaxing comfort for hours of driving. They are also designed to help protect you in the event of an accident. Part of your Volvo's protective body structure, the seat frames are extremely strong to help protect in a side-impact. Integrated anti-submarining protection helps reduce the risk of sliding under the safety belt in a collision. And to help protect your spine if the car lands hard in the terrain after an accident, the front seat frame and cushions have a completely new design that enables them to absorb severe energy loads.

    Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)

It’s something that happens every day in every major city in the world – a moment’s inattention and one driver runs into the back of another. And the result can be long-term injury as a result of whiplash. Volvo, as part of its IntelliSafe programme, has developed a system that can help reduce the risk of long-term injury by as much as 50 per cent. During a rear impact, the WHIPS system moves the entire seatback with the passenger or driver – similar to the way you might gently catch a ball – while the head restraint remains rigid to support the neck. A unique Volvo design.

    Head restraints

We have developed head restraints that offer outstanding protection regardless of a person’s height, whether they are seated in the front or the rear. And the rear middle head restraint can be fully retracted into the backrest to improve the driver’s rearward visibility. It’s designed to obstruct taller passengers from sitting down without raising the restraint to its upright position. The outer head restraints can fold forward at the press of a button (optional) to further improve rear vision. In the folded position, they too are designed to obstruct passengers from sitting down without raising the restraints to their upright position.

    Anti-submarining protection

To help prevent that passengers slide under and out of their safety belts in the event of a big impact, the seats feature anti-submarining guards which are specially shaped panels angled upwards at the forward edge inside the seats.

    Volvo On Call

We created Volvo On Call to make your everyday life a little less complicated. This smartphone app gives you a host of clever solutions that allow you to control your Volvo remotely with a touch of a button – and a lot more. Wherever you are and whenever you want, you can check the remaining distance to empty tank, the fuel level, average fuel consumption, the outdoor temperature at your car, if the doors are locked and much more. And if the car is unlocked, you can lock it (or unlock it) remotely just using your smartphone. You can conveniently create your own driving journals and download data to Excel. In your smartphone, you can also see your car's location on a map or ask it to honk and flash for quick location – a feature that you might find very convenient on big parking lots. Further facilitating your travel planning, you can even send a destination from your smartphone to the Sensus Navigation in your car. Another everyday luxury you will enjoy with Volvo On Call, is the possibility to control the climate in your car using your smartphone. To warm up or cool down the cabin before travelling, you can remotely start the engine and control your Volvo's climate system. And if your car is equipped with a fuel-driven heater, you can start the heater remotely via your smartphone for a comfortable climate without using the engine. Volvo On Call also includes a built-in modem and a dedicated SIM-card slot which enable you to create a strong, stable internet connection via your Volvo's roof antenna. You simply turn your Volvo into a Wi-Fi hotspot – anybody that shares your ride can easily connect his or her smartphone, laptop or tablet to the internet. And whether you've got a flat tire, have a breakdown or get into an accident, Volvo On Call is there to send assistance anywhere. Push the Volvo On Call button in your car (or use your smartphone app) to speak to an operator who can dispatch assistance to your GPS location. Or in an emergency that calls for help right away, simply press the SOS button. In an accident that activates the car's airbags or safety belt pre-tensioners or if you have run into a large animal, your Volvo alerts a trained operator to contact the car and send emergency service. Volvo On Call can also alert you to an attempted break-in. And if the car is stolen, the Volvo On Call operator can use your car's GPS to find or immobilize it.

    First-aid kit

The first-aid kit is conveniently carried in the load compartment and contains a variety of bandages. The contents are stored in different compartments to make it easier to find what you need in an emergency.

  • Child safety
  • Child safety seats
    Integrated booster cushion

You know when your son or daughter reaches that age when he or she is a little too big for a conventional child seat? Well, we’ve got a solution to smooth the transition from child seat to regular safety belt use, one that will keep your child comfortable and safe – and one that’s always available (for parents, grandparents or whoever suddenly needs to transport a child). Our integrated child booster cushion in the centre second-row seat helps ensure that the safety belt is always positioned to work effectively. That, and the safety belt load limiter, which is adapted to a child with this option, will reduce the strain on a child’s neck and chest during an impact. And when you don’t need it, the booster cushion disappears into the seat cushion. The seat in the seven-seat version can be moved forward so the child can be closer to the adults in the front.

  • Child safety equipment
    Passenger airbag cut-off switch

The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off, you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.

    Power child safety lock

The power child lock enables you to conveniently lock the rear doors and rear power windows from the driver’s seat and prevent them from being opened from the inside.

  • Security
    Alarm

Enjoy peace of mind also after you've parked your Volvo. Automatically turned on when you lock the car, the alarm is connected to the doors, bonnet and tailgate. It also reacts to movement inside the car or the breaking of a window. A level sensor deters thieves from jacking up the car to steal your wheels or tow it away. The deadlock function makes it impossible for a thief to open the doors from the inside once the car is locked from the outside. The movement sensor, level sensor and deadlock function can be switched off so people or pets can be left inside the parked and locked car.

    Remote controlled alarm

The alarm is triggered if anyone attempts to open the doors, bonnet or boot lid, as well as reacting to movement inside the car or if a window is broken. Add a level sensor and the alarm triggers if the car is jacked up - and you can activate it manually from your remote control or PCC in an emergency.

    Remote-controlled central locking system

A touch of a button on the remote control locks or unlocks the doors, tailgate and glove compartment. Use the personal settings menu to decide if the remote unlocks the driver’s door first, or all doors at the same time. You can also close or open all windows (including the panoramic sunroof if you have one) and unlock the tailgate separately – you can access your load compartment while nobody else can open any of the doors from the outside.

    Automatic door locking

To further enhance your personal security, the doors can be set in the information menu to automatically lock the moment you drive away. Alternatively, lock them swiftly from the front seats using the lock button. For your safety in the event of a collision or roll-over, your Volvo unlocks automatically to make it possible to open the doors from the outside after an accident.

    Keyless start

Start your Volvo with your remote control in your pocket. As long as your remote control is inside the car, you can start the engine simply by turning the start knob on the tunnel console while depressing the brake pedal.

    Keyless locking and unlocking

When carrying bags or luggage, it can be very convenient that your Volvo unlocks as soon as you approach your car and pull the door handle. No need to press the remote control button – just keep the remote in your pocket or purse. And to lock the car after you've parked, you just push the button in the door handle. In addition to ordinary remote controls, this feature also includes a very small, waterproof keyless mini remote control you can bring with you everywhere.

    Global locking and closing

Forgot to close the windows? This function allows you to close all windows including the panoramic sunroof and lock the car all at once by pressing the lock button on the remote control for four seconds. Alternatively, press the unlock button for two seconds to unlock the car and open all the windows to get fresh air inside the car before entering.

    Immobiliser and theft-protected locks

Not only will the door locks withstand most break-in attempts, the electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right remote control. And even if a would-be thief manages to get into the car via a window, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open the doors from the inside.

    Keyless mini remote control

Choosing keyless locking and unlocking you also get this exquisite, very small remote control. Slip it into your pocket or wear it around your neck – it's so small you can bring it with you all the time. And you don't have to worry about swimming, surfing, yachting or any other outdoor activities: this remote is waterproof.

    Hands-free tailgate opening and closing

When your hands are full after shopping, the comfort opening function of your power tailgate can make a big difference: wave your foot under the sensor in the rear bumper, and it opens or closes automatically.

    Hidden storage compartment

Under the load compartment floor you’ve got an extra space for storage. This area is easy to access via a hinged floor hatch. In addition the tailgate – just by the function of its elegant design – overlaps and locks the hatch when it's closed, preventing a smash-and-grab burglary. A moulded divider separates the storage area from the spare wheel compartment. In the five-seat variant, there's also an additional hidden, smaller storage compartment under the load compartment floor.

    Welcome and Home Safe light

Enhancing security as you go to your car at night, Welcome light provides a warm reception. The parking lights, rear lights, interior lighting and ground lighting in the door handles are turned on for 30 seconds when you unlock your car with the remote control. If a door is opened, it stays on for up to two more minutes. Home Safe light is activated with the headlight stalk as you leave the car. This feature provides a low beam from the headlight to accompany you to your door, whether you’re returning home or are out on the road.

    Ground lighting

Integrated in the front door handles, the ground lighting illuminates the area beneath the door handles for a welcoming feel when you approach your car at night. It also makes it easier to locate the door handle and avoid stepping into, for example, an unseen puddle of water. Ground lighting is activated when you unlock your car using the remote control. For your extra convenience, the optional LED ground lighting under the doors further illuminates the area below the open door.

    Laminated windows

Extremely tough laminated glass in the side windows and the optional panoramic sunroof turns an attempted smash-and-grab into a total waste of time for the would-be thief. It also contributes to a quiet cabin. Laminated glass is standard in the windscreen, optional for the side windows and included in the panoramic glass roof option.

    Lockable wheel bolts

These provide a simple, effective way of reducing the risk of aluminium wheels being stolen. The wheel lock features one uniquely coded socket enabling only you or your garage technician to remove the wheels.

You know how frustrating it is to climb behind the wheel, only to find that a partner or colleague has adjusted the seat and door mirrors to suit their particular physique. That’s why you can electrically adjust the driver’s seat and door mirrors to your perfect position and then your Volvo saves the settings. Every time you use your remote control for the central locking, the seat and door mirrors will automatically adjust to your preferences (you get two remote controls with your Volvo and can order up to ten more). Each remote control triggers the corresponding setting from the last time that particular remote control was used. Furthermore, you can save up to three different seat and door mirror settings by using the memory buttons conveniently positioned on the front door interior panels. Depending on the equipment level of your seat, the memory also includes the settings for the lumbar support, cushion extension and backrest side bolsters. The driver and front passenger seat cushion and backrest are easily adjusted using the intuitive controls placed on the outside of the seat cushions. An extra multi-directional control also allows convenient setting of the lumbar support, and – in the more highly specified seat variants – also for the backrest side supports, the cushion extension and the massage function.

  • Climate
    Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP)

There’s nothing that gets a trip off to a worse start than getting into stuffy car, particularly on a warm day. To prepare a fresh environment in your new Volvo, our Clean Zone Interior package initiates a ventilation cycle, which is triggered when you unlock the car with your remote control. This feature is active on days when it is at least 10°C outside. The Clean Zone Interior Package also does a great job of venting out allergy and asthma inducing substances, especially gases and smells from new materials in your new car. This automatic function is gradually reduced during the first years of usage to finally be terminated.

    Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)

Our Interior Air Quality System is created to give you and your passengers a better and healthier interior environment with clean air and minimised amounts of interior emissions. The system continuously monitors the incoming air quality. As soon as it detects harmful substances – such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen dioxides – it temporarily shuts off all incoming air and starts recirculating the air inside the cabin. An active carbon filter effectively filters out harmful substances like vehicle exhaust and diesel exhaust particles. It also reduces some chemical odours from the outside, for example from the windscreen washer fluid. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.

    Two-zone climate system

We designed our two-zone climate system to give you and your passengers the best possible interior air quality and comfort in all seasons, all temperatures and all weathers. The efficient, electronically controlled automatic system maintains the cabin temperature you choose and can be set independently for the driver and front passenger side. The automatic fan function can be set in five different levels to suit your preferences – for example, if you drive alone in good weather or carry six passengers with wet clothes. Separate adjustable air vents in the roof pillars ensure that the occupants in the second and third row of seats can enjoy a comfortable climate even during long drives. All cabin climate settings and functions are easily controlled from the front seats using intuitive touch screen controls. An efficient cabin filter helps keep the incoming air free from dust, pollen and other particles – a real benefit if you or your passengers are prone to hay fever or other allergies. And adding our Interior Air Quality System, the climate system continuously monitors the incoming air quality.

    Four-zone climate system

We designed our four-zone climate system to give you and your passengers the best possible interior air quality and comfort in all seasons, all temperatures and all weathers. The efficient, electronically controlled automatic system maintains the cabin temperature you choose. No matter if you're seated in the front seats or in any of the outer second row seats – you can set the cabin temperature and automatic fan speed individually to suit your preferences. The automatic fan function can be set in five different levels to maximise the climate comfort for each occupant. Separate adjustable air vents in the roof pillars ensure that the occupants in the second and third row of seats can enjoy the same climate comfort as the driver and front passenger. And whether you're seated in the front or second row of seats, the cabin climate settings are easily controlled using intuitive touch screen controls – via the central in-dash touch screen, or via the elegant touch control panel on the back of the tunnel console. An efficient cabin filter helps keep the incoming air free from dust, pollen and other particles – a real benefit if you or your passengers are prone to hay fever or other allergies. And adding our Interior Air Quality System, the climate system continuously monitors the incoming air quality. The four-zone climate system also includes air-conditioned cooling of the glove compartment – very convenient to keep drinks or other heat-sensitive stuff cool and fresh during the journey. And to really maximise climate comfort for the third row passengers when it's warm, a separate air condition unit can be added for this area.

    Third row air conditioning

When it's warm, your passengers in the third row of seats will appreciate having an air conditioning system of their own. This system complements the four-zone climate system and provides an air temperature that follows the second row settings. Separate, adjustable air vents in the roof pillars make it possible for the passengers to regulate the airflow themselves. The separate air conditioning is activated from the central touch screen. It can also be activated when the third row seats are folded and you for example have a pet in the load compartment.

    Pre ventilation and post climatisation

You can conveniently create a comfortable climate in your Volvo before you have entered it. To pre-ventilate the cabin within 40 minutes, the climate system fan can be started remotely from your smartphone using the Volvo On Call app or from inside the car via the centre touch screen. If your car is fitted with a fuel-driven heater, you can start it the same way to achieve and keep a comfortable cabin temperature. In the plug-in hybrid variant, you can also start the electrically driven air-conditioning to create a cool cabin climate when it's hot on the outside. To maintain the cabin temperature after you have turned off the engine and for example are waiting inside the car, you can keep the climate system and ventilation active for up to 15 minutes – all depending on the climate and engine temperature.

    Adjustable rear air vents

Even if you ride in the second or third row of seats, you can adjust the airflow to suit your preferences. Adjustable air vents that are conveniently located in the roof pillars at face level create a comfortable environment for rear seat passengers. They also keep ice and mist off the rear side windows, which makes for a safer journey.

    Air-conditioned glove compartment

The stylish and roomy glove compartment not only keeps order on your documents, pens, credit cards and other stuff. It can also be used to keep drinks or other heat-sensitive stuff cool and fresh during the journey. The glove compartment lid is an uncluttered surface that you open by pressing a button on the centre console – an example of clean Scandinavian design with form and function as one. The air-conditioned glove compartment is included in the four-zone climate system.

    Air-conditioning remote start

Imagine meeting a comfortably climatized cabin every time you get inside your Volvo Plug-In Hybrid – even if it's unbearably hot on the outside. With the air-conditioning remote start, you remotely start your car's engine and air conditioning via the Volvo On Call app in your smartphone. This cools down the cabin just in time to allow you and your passengers a comfortable start of your journey. Depending on local environment regulations, the engine running time can be set between 1 and 15 minutes.

    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

    Dark tinted rear windows

To make travelling during hot sunny days more comfortable for your rear seat passengers, you can have dark tinted glass in the rear windows and the load compartment windows including the tailgate window. This helps cut glare and keep cabin temperatures down in hot, sunny conditions. For your comfort, it also reduces UV-radiation and adds to the sophisticated look of your Volvo.

    Heat-reducing windscreen

For a more comfortable interior climate, this windscreen reduces heat radiation from the sun through the windscreen and the temperature inside the car by filtering out the sun’s heat-generating invisible infrared rays.

    Panoramic roof

We designed this exclusive panoramic glass roof to give you and all your passengers a superb experience of air and light inside your Volvo. For ventilation, the front section can be opened at the push of a button, either by sliding it over the rear part, or by tilting it in the rear end. A wind deflector and sealing at the sides effectively eliminate wind buffeting and draft. To help maintain climate comfort on sunny days, there's a power operated sunshade in perforated textile that reduces heat and glare while keeping the airy feel inside the cabin. And to increase your comfort when entering your car in sunny days, the sunshade closes automatically as soon as the outside temperature reaches 25° C when your car is parked and locked. Dark tinted laminated glass further increases your climate comfort and security. It also helps protect from UV radiation. And if you've forgot to close the panoramic roof after you've parked your car, it can be closed from the outside with the remote control.

    Fuel-driven engine and cabin heater

A fuel-driven heater will make your car easier to start, warm up the cabin and help reduce the environmental impact – a cold engine produces far more harmful emissions than a warm one, and will increase engine wear. Start the heater directly, or set the time you’d like to enter your warm and defrosted car. With a remote starter you can activate the heater without going out to the car. And if your car is equipped with Volvo On Call, you can start the heater using your smartphone.

    Heated seats, front and rear

We Scandinavians are used to snow and ice. And because we understand cold weather better than most, few cars are better equipped to deal with freezing temperatures than your Volvo. In fact, thanks to our heating systems, you may now positively look forward to your drive when the mercury drops. Take our heated seats with heating in the seat cushions including the cushion extensions and lower backrest – since they work particularly quickly, your car will be just as comfortable as your living room in no time at all, with three levels for the driver and front seat passenger. Back seat passengers are catered for as well, with heated seats for the two outer positions on the second row of seats, equally featuring individual three-level controls.

    Heated windscreen

Standing outside your car scraping off the ice on a cold winter’s morning isn’t the best start to your day. Now, thanks to our heated windscreen, all you need to do is push a button. When you do, the windscreen will start de-icing immediately just like the rear window and door mirrors, and you’ll soon be on your way.

    Heated steering wheel

Need a little help thawing out those cold winter mornings? Just push a button and warm your hands on our heated leather steering wheel.

    Centre display

When we created the driver's environment in your Volvo, our main focus was to make it as intuitive and natural as possible. We achieved this by virtually eliminating buttons and switches and moving these controls into our new tablet-sized, 9-inch centre display with touch screen. From here, you intuitively control functions such as climate control, entertainment, navigation, the in-car apps and everything in between to make your drive easy and comfortable. The virtual buttons on the screen are dynamic– when you need the buttons, they become bigger and appear on the lower part of the screen to be easy to find and control. You can also rearrange the virtual buttons to suit your personal preferences. The vertical portrait format of the display makes it easy to use and overview. To make it comfortable and safe for you to view the display while driving, all information is presented in the upper part of the screen while the lower part is dedicated for the touch controls. This format is also convenient when you for example are being guided by the navigation system as it can display more of the road ahead. Highly advanced touch screen technology means your finger barely needs to touch the screen to activate or control a function. Some commands you can perform just by sweeping a finger or a hand across the screen – even with gloves on. Contributing to the elegant clean Scandinavian look of the cabin, the full graphical display is glossy at the same time as anti-reflective coating minimises reflections and glare. And just as with the driver display, the looks and colour scheme of the centre display can be adapted to suit your mood and driving style: Comfort, Eco and Sport. In addition, the look of the display also changes depending on the drive mode you choose.

    Voice control

Your Volvo not only inspires your drive. It can also listen to your commands and fulfil your wishes. To control functions like the climate system, navigation, entertainment and phone, you just have to raise your voice and tell your Volvo what you want. You can talk naturally, just as you were talking to a friend – no complicated menus of words. Our voice control perfectly complements the central display and steering wheel controls, allowing you to keep the hands on the steering wheel and your attention on traffic and the road ahead.

    Steering wheel controls

Every little detail in your Volvo is there for a reason – to give you a great experience and facilitate life in your car. For example, the button controls that are neatly integrated in the steering wheel design. From here you can control several functions like cruise control, phone, infotainment, trip computer and the driver information menu in the driver display – all without taking your hands off the wheel. And to make your Volvo response even more intuitively to your commands, you can use voice control that is conveniently activated at the press of a steering wheel button.

    Illuminated vanity mirrors

Fitted in the sun visors for the driver and front seat passenger, lights come on when you open the vanity mirror cover – convenient and practical. Integrated ticket holders further enhance your convenience.

    Automatic headlamp levelling

The light beams from the LED headlights are automatically kept at the optimum level to provide you with the best vision without dazzling other road-users, regardless of load and the amount of passengers. The system acts swiftly and will even maintain the headlight level during fast acceleration.

    Park assist sensors, rear

Activated when you reverse or if the car rolls backwards with the gear in neutral, the rear park assist sensors help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers increases in frequency as the car gets closer to the obstacle, becoming a continuous tone when it’s time to stop. The centre display shows a graphical top view of the car and the distance to detected obstacles.

    Power door mirrors

You easily adjust the aerodynamic yet generously dimensioned door mirrors from your position in the driver's seat. To protect your door mirrors from damage while the car for example is parked or driving through a car wash, press both buttons for the left and right mirror at the same time to fold them flat against the car. They can also be set to fold or unfold automatically every time you lock or unlock the car. To facilitate parking, the door mirrors can tilt automatically (or by the push of a button) to show you the kerb when reversing. Contributing to your safety when it's cold, the door mirrors are electrically heated together with the rear window and therefore kept free from frost. And to make sure that a following car’s headlights don’t dazzle you when driving in the dark, you can add an auto-dimming function that reduces intrusive light reflection via the door mirrors.

Power folding outer rear head restraints, second row

Helping to increase your field of vision when the second row of seats is unoccupied, the outer head restraints can be folded forward at the push of a button from the driver's seat. In the folded position, the head restraints are designed to obstruct passengers from sitting down without raising them to their upright position. The height-adjustable rear middle head restraint can be fully retracted into the backrest to further improve rear vision.

    Heated windscreen washer nozzles

To give you the best possible vision even in heavy rain or snow at all speeds, extremely efficient washer nozzles are integrated into the wiper arms and apply fluid above the wiper blades. By adding heating that prevents the washer fluid to freeze in the nozzles, the windscreen can be washed even in the harshest conditions.

    Head-up display

Driving your Volvo, you never have to look away from the road. The head-up display presents the most vital driver information as it's hovering two metres in front of the windscreen. You can keep your eyes on the traffic at the same time as you, for example, get information from the navigation system. You don't have to change focus or look down, which also gives less strain on the eyes. The brightness of the head-up display adapts automatically to the light conditions, and you can set the system to suit your own personal preferences.

    360° camera

With our 360° camera you can see a virtual bird's eye view of the area surrounding your Volvo. A high-resolution image is shown in the centre display and will be a great help for example when manoeuvring or reversing in tight areas with impaired visibility – you can even see what's going around the corner at a 180° side view in front or at the rear of your car. The system uses four hidden cameras: two at the door mirrors, one at the front and one at the rear. And by gently touching the camera images on the centre display touch screen, you can get a view from just that camera. The rear camera can also be switched to a zoomed-in view close to the car – very convenient when hitching a trailer, for example.

    8-inch driver display

From the moment you take your position behind the wheel of your Volvo, you'll feel you're in control. In the full graphical digital driver display in front of you, all relevant driver information – including navigation directions, telephone and actual road signs – is intuitively displayed. The 8-inch display features one big central instrument that is surrounded by additional information displays. To ensure that all information is presented as clearly and comfortably for your eyes as possible, the brightness of the display adapts automatically according to the exterior light conditions. Like, for example, when the sun shines through the windows or there are lights from vehicles behind when it's dark. It also adapts when you're driving through a tunnel and at night. The driver display can also be seen by the front seat passenger. When the ignition is off, the display has a glossy black, hi-tech look to enhance the exclusive impression every time you enter your Volvo.

    12.3-inch driver display

From the moment you take your position behind the wheel of your Volvo, you'll feel you're in control. In the full graphical digital driver display in front of you, all relevant driver information – including navigation directions, telephone and actual road signs – is intuitively displayed. Our top-of-the-line 12.3-inch display features two large round instruments and one central information display. Depending on how you use it, the size of the information display adapts to give you the best visual experience. For example, if you use the navigation system, that display becomes bigger and the two instruments smaller. Further contributing to your driving experience, you can choose between different looks and colour schemes to adapt the display to the mood you're in. There's a choice of three display modes: Comfort, Eco and Sport. In addition, the look of the display also changes depending on the drive mode you choose. The mode you select, also applies for the 9-inch central display.

    Interior lighting

Good lighting is the key to creating the right atmosphere. This is as true in your car as it is in your home. When you unlock your Volvo, the interior light together with foot well lights and mood lights are illuminated. And when a front door is opened, light under the door illuminates the ground by courtesy to help you avoid stepping into, for example, a puddle of water. In addition, illuminated tread plates and a light guide along the dashboard and the four doors create a welcoming feel inside your Volvo. The discrete mood lights further contributes to a warm and cosy atmosphere when travelling. Front reading lamps are integrated in the roof console. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed in the roof and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver. The interior light will fade out gradually after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked.

    Interior high level illumination

Good lighting is the key to creating the right atmosphere. This is as true in your car as it is in your home. When you unlock your Volvo, the interior light together with foot well lights and mood lights are illuminated. And when a front door is opened, light under the door illuminates the ground by courtesy to help you avoid stepping into, for example, a puddle of water. In addition, illuminated tread plates and a light guide along the dashboard and the four doors create a welcoming feel inside your Volvo. The discrete multicolour mood lights, the door pocket illumination and the interior door handle illumination further contribute to a warm and cosy atmosphere when travelling. This also makes it easy to see and find things in the dark. Front reading lamps are integrated in the roof console. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed in the roof and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver. The interior light will fade out gradually after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked. And to facilitate loading or unloading your car in the dark, the tailgate working light lights up when you open the tailgate.

    (Standard on Inscription and R-Design)

    Cruise control

Conveniently operated from the steering wheel, cruise control allows you to drive in a more relaxed way without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. The car maintains the speed you choose until you turn off the cruise control or press the brake or accelerator. After braking, the car returns to its previous cruising speed at the touch of a button. After accelerating – for instance to overtake – your car automatically reverts to its previous cruising speed once you release the accelerator.

    Trip computer

Operated via the indicator stalk, the trip computer shows current and average fuel consumption, how far the fuel will take you and average speed – helping you drive more economically.

    Ambient temperature gauge

Stay tuned about the weather-dependent road conditions. This temperature gauge monitors the outside temperature and warns you if there is any risk of black ice.

    Park Assist Pilot

Take away the fuss of parking and let your car park itself – no matter if you're about to parallel park along the street or manoeuvre into a perpendicular parking space. At the press of a button, Park Assist Pilot scans the parking slot using ultrasonic sensor technology. The system alerts you if the slot is spacious enough (minimum 1.2 x the length of the car at parallel parking). Then just follow the instructions in the driver information display. You control the speed and direction of your car, while Park Assist Pilot takes over the steering until you're perfectly parked. It can also assist you when steering out of a tight parallel parking space. Park Assist Pilot also includes front and rear park assist sensors that help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The centre display shows a graphical top view of the car and the distance to detected obstacles.

    Driver adjustable power steering

To adapt the speed-dependent power steering characteristics to your own personal preferences, you can add driver adjustable power steering. While the steering assistance adjusts automatically depending on your car’s speed, you can choose in the centre display between three levels of overall steering feel and sensitivity – for low, medium or high steering assistance through the entire speed range.

    Apple CarPlay

If you are used to iPhone you'll probably prefer to meet that interface every time you connect your iPhone to the centre display in your Volvo. With Apple CarPlay, the display of your iPhone (5 or later) with some of its apps and buttons is mirrored at the centre display. You conveniently control functions like phone and music in the familiar Apple IOS layout – either via the centre display touch screen or by Siri voice commands. You can also receive and reply to text messages using Siri voice commands.

Apple and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc.

    Rain sensor

Once activated, the rain sensor can start the windscreen wipers as soon as it begins to rain or if water splashes onto the windscreen. For your convenience, it can also automatically adapt the intermittent windscreen-wiper function. Its sensitivity can be adjusted via a ring on the wiper stalk.

Daytime Running Lights with daylight sensor

With the light switch in the Auto position, the fuel-saving Daytime Running Lights are automatically activated. If the daylight becomes to dim, or if you enter a tunnel for example, a sensor will detect the changed light conditions and activate your car's headlights. They will also be activated if you turn on the windscreen wipers or the rear fog light. The system will turn the headlights automatically as well. In the LED headlights, the Daytime Running Lights have a unique hammer-shaped look that enhances the powerful design of your Volvo.

    Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror

The frameless inner rear-view mirror is a true piece of Scandinavian design. Ending the need to take your hand off the steering wheel and stop headlight beams shining in your eyes, the anti-dazzle function is stepless and returns to normal when it's no longer needed.

    Power windows, front and rear

The power windows have controls conveniently located in the door armrests. The front windows can be lowered or raised with a quick press or pull of a button, and you can lock the back windows from the driver’s seat if you’re travelling with small children. In this case, you’ll also be glad of the automatic anti-clamp protection, which will stop a window from closing on a trapped little hand.

    Speed-dependent power steering

You can enjoy pliant and comfortable steering at all speeds. The speed-dependent and progressive power steering uses sophisticated, speed-sensitive technology to regulate the amount of power assistance you need while driving. At highway speeds, the steering is firm and positive. When parking or in slow traffic, the steering is light and effortless.

    Headlamp level adjuster

The headlamp level adjuster allows the driver to lower or raise the angle of the headlight beam by turning a dial on the instrument panel. This is particularly useful when driving at night with a full load. Only applies to halogen headlamps; LED headlights adjust automatically.

    Extra power outlet

Neatly integrated in all seat rows, the extra power outlets can provide electricity for an electric cooler box, phone charger, game console or other portable electronic devices. Adding the extra high-voltage power outlet at the back of the rear tunnel, you can also connect or charge appliances in your car, for example a laptop. For safety reasons, the power outlet is hidden behind a pull-down cover.

    Bluetooth® handsfree system, integrated

Want to access your mobile phone while you’re on the road to find an address, lay out a route in the navigation system and call ahead that you’re on your way? The on-board Bluetooth® technology lets you do all this wirelessly through the infotainment system – and play some music along the way. Once configured for a mobile phone, the system automatically recognises your phone as you enter the car. And as you get in and out of the car, the system automatically allows you to switch freely from the phone to the handsfree system and back again. Our integrated Bluetooth® handsfree system allows you to operate your phone conveniently using the buttons on the steering wheel or the centre display touch screen. Phone information is shown on the driver display. And if you’ve chosen voice control, you can make your calls with spoken commands. What’s more, you can stream high quality audio from a media player and listen to it through the car’s audio system.

    Sensus Connect with High Performance

When we created the audio systems to the Volvo XC90, our focus was simply to deliver the most impressive sound in the category. Already from ground up, the vehicle architecture is designed with audio performance in mind – for example when it comes to how we fit and integrate the speakers into the car. For a really crisp and natural sound, the six-channel amplifier of the High Performance audio system delivers a total of 330 watts to ten speakers. The tweeters, woofers and mid-range speakers are separated and interact to give you and all your passengers a top quality sound experience – even if they travel in the third row of the seven-seat version. The overall sound quality and bass performance is quite simply superb, and if you want an even richer and deeper bass sound there's the option of Volvo's extremely powerful sub-woofer. This audio system is part of our Sensus Connect which also includes the 9-inch centre display with touchscreen and steering wheel controls with a scroll wheel. And if you want to watch your favourite TV shows while at standstill, you can add Digital TV for terrestrial channels.

Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins

In our quest for perfection, we developed our new state-of-the-art audio system Premium Sound together with the renowned high-end audio manufacturers Bowers & Wilkins. The result is simply overwhelming – the Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins may be the world's best sound system in the class. The numbers are impressive: one 12-channel amplifier, an astonishing 1400W output and 19 separate high-end speakers (including two automotive innovations: a unique fresh-air sub-woofer and a tweeter on the dashboard facing the occupants for outstanding sound quality). But this audio system goes beyond figures – our sound engineers have searched obsessively for audiophile perfection. Using a radically new approach, they developed a unique room transformation technology together with the Swedish audio software specialists Dirac Research. This technology makes it possible to recreate the acoustics of a specific room inside the car. There are three room modes: "Studio" for an excellent, dry and precise listening experience, "Individual Stage" that allows you to control the acoustics and create your own sound using the centre display touchscreen, and "Gothenburg Concert Hall" which recreates the amazing acoustic experience of this legendary concert hall. The result speaks directly to any music lover's soul – wherever you're seated in your XC90. The whole experience exudes quality and craftsmanship – most of the tweeter and mid-range speaker panels are in stainless steel, and the yellow speaker cones are elegantly visible through the mesh. This audio system is part of our Sensus Connect which also includes the 9-inch centre display with touchscreen and steering wheel controls with a scroll wheel. And if you want to watch your favourite TV shows while at standstill, you can add Digital TV for terrestrial channels.

  • Audio equipment
    Sub-woofer

Want to enjoy the depth of genuine, uncluttered bass? We designed this sub-woofer to meet the audiophile's most exacting demands on bass reproduction. Using fresh-air technology that allows the sub-woofer's 250 mm carbon fibre cone to pulse enormous amounts of air through an opening in the rear wheel-arch, it can deliver extremely low and undistorted bass tones (down to 20 Hz). And to save space, the sub-woofer is thin and integrated in the vehicle architecture to not encroach passenger or load space. This sub-woofer is included in the Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins. A lower specified version is available as option for the High Performance audio system.

    Steering wheel remote control

Adjust the volume, switch radio stations or play the previous or next track without taking your hands off the wheel. With illuminated buttons and an optional scroll-wheel control for intuitive use, just scroll your track lists and push to choose track.

    Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB)

With a digital radio on board, you can listen to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) – the standard for digital radio in Europe. In countries with DAB broadcasts, you'll have access to more radio channels, improved radio reception and near-CD quality sound.

  • Entertainment
    Digital TV receiver

Don’t miss your favourite TV show even if you’re in your car. Complement your Volvo with this digital TV receiver, and you can watch terrestrial TV broadcasts on the centre display when the car is not being driven. The digital TV is conveniently controlled via the touchscreen or the optional remote control.

  • Load compartment
    Adjustable rear height

When you load or unload your Volvo SUV, the possibility offered by the optional air-suspension system to lower the rear end of the car with up to 5 cm is very convenient – particularly when you're dealing with heavy items. A push of a button inside the load compartment, and you don't have to lift your loads as high. This feature is also helpful when hitching a caravan or a trailer.

    Second seat row

Designed for maximum comfort during hours of travelling, the three individual seats on the second row provide generous body support and can be individually reclined in seven steps to suit personal preferences. In the seven-seat version, each seat on the second row also slides individually to further enhance legroom in the third row of seats. This also makes it easier to adapt the load compartment, for example when you need to haul bulky loads together with passengers. If needed, each seat also folds individually into the load compartment floor for maximum versatility. The middle seat can be equipped with an integrated booster cushion and can slide forward additionally for even better elbow space or to put the child in even closer contact with parents in the front seats.

Power folding and raising of the third-row seats

The third-row of seats makes your Volvo XC90 extremely versatile as you can carry up to six passengers and luggage. To further enhance your convenience, you can add power folding and raising of the seats. Without leaving the driver's seat, you can increase the load area by folding the third-row seats using a button on the centre touch screen. And to raise the seats when they're needed, just press the button again and they will regain their upright position. The head restraints are folded forward to give you a good rear vision and can be manually raised when somebody wants to use the seat. The power operated third row of seats can also be folded and raised pressing the button on top the seat backrests.

    Load cover

Fitted behind the second row of seats, this retractable load cover conceals your gear in the load compartment. If you press the load cover handle downwards, the load cover automatically retracts halfway to give you convenient access to the load compartment. And when not needed, the load cover is easily detached and can be stored diagonally on the load compartment floor.

    Flat-folding three-split rear seat

Each passenger seat backrest on the second row can be folded individually to give you the chance to carry passengers and cargo at the same time. What's more, fold down part or all of the three-split rear seat and you'll have easy access to a spacious load compartment with a completely flat load surface. And by folding flat the middle seat backrest, you can transport long loads while still carrying passengers in complete comfort and safety. Finally, for added comfort and versatility, the seats in the second row of the seven-seat version can slide forward for even more load space.

Power outlet and load holding strap, load compartment

By adding a 12V power outlet in the load compartment, you'll easily be able to connect extra electrical equipment such as an electric cooler box for your refreshments. An elastic load holding strap above a recess in the right hand corner of the load compartment floor allows you to place and hold smaller items in the recess.

    Shopping bag holder

You don't have to worry about grocery bags falling over in the load compartment. This convenient holder folds up from the load compartment floor to accommodate shopping bags or other cargo – secure with hooks and an elastic strap. When not in use, it's hidden in the floor.

    Third seat row

The seven-seat version offers a third row of seats that makes it possible to comfortably accommodate up to six passengers whenever the need arises. The two individual seats in the third row are generously proportioned to offer class-leading comfort for two passengers up to 170 cm. In the third row they ride comfortably with good foot space, legroom and headroom. The two seats are centred close to each other to give the occupants a good front view for a more enjoyable ride. This area can also be fitted with its own air conditioning system, including adjustable ventilation vents. To facilitate getting in and out of the third row, the outer seats of the second row can be conveniently folded and pushed forward using a handle on top of the backrest. And when the third row of seats is not needed or you need extra space for luggage and gear, each seat is easily folded into the load compartment floor.

    Shopping bag hooks

After shopping, the two integrated folding hooks in the load compartment side panels will take care of up to two shopping bags. They fold out from the side panel at a push. And when retracted, they are completely flush with the side panel to not obstruct when you load or unload your car.

    Versatile load compartment

We designed the load compartment of your XC90 to be as versatile as possible, without compromising on style. For example, the load compartment has a regular shape and the rear-wheel suspension is designed not to intrude on the load area. The extremely flexible seating with individually foldable seats in both the second and third row makes it easy to safely and comfortably bring both people and cargo in your Volvo. With all rear seats folded you will have a completely flat load area of 1,950 litres, allowing you to carry really big loads. The maximum load volume behind the second row of seats in the rear-most position is 651 litres, and if you have raised the third row of seats in the seven-seat version you will still have a surprisingly large load compartment of 291 litres.

    Power tailgate

When you for example approach your car and your hands are full, the power tailgate can be very convenient. It can be opened or closed automatically in three different ways: with the remote control, using the button on the dashboard, or by pressing a button on the tailgate. To help minimise risk of injury when closing the tailgate, sensors around the tailgate opening can detect obstructions to help avoid pinching your fingers and stop the tailgate. And if something gets in the way when opening, the tailgate stops. The power tailgate can also be programmed to open to a lower height than its maximum. This can be very useful if you for example park your car in a garage with limited roof height. For extra convenience, you can add keyless locking/unlocking that includes hands-free opening and closing of the power tailgate.

    Hands-free tailgate opening and closing

When your hands are full after shopping, the comfort opening function of your power tailgate can make a big difference: wave your foot under the sensor in the rear bumper, and it opens or closes automatically.

  • Load securing
    Safety net

Fitted behind the second row of seats or behind the front seats, the nylon protective net protects passengers from loose luggage when braking sharply and can be stored beneath the load compartment floor when it isn't needed.

    Load securing eyelets

Part of our load safety system, the four elegantly designed eyelets help you secure cargo to the load compartment floor with either load securing straps or the elastic luggage net. When not in use, they are folded flush with the surrounding surface to not impede during loading or unloading. This also adds to the stylish impression of the load compartment.

  • Towing
    Air suspension and Four-C

With the air suspension system you give your Volvo an even greater breadth of dynamic ability. Instead of traditional springs, this technology is based on separate air chambers for each wheel. Controlled by a computerised compressor, each air chamber constantly adapts to the driving conditions. Together with our Four-C electronically controlled damping system, this gives you unique opportunities to control and adapt the suspension according to your driving desires. You can select different drive modes, all to increase the car´s versatility in all road and weather conditions. In Comfort mode, the air suspension is tuned for maximum comfort, while Eco mode lowers the car with 20 mm at speeds over 70 km/h for improved aerodynamics and lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Dynamic mode enhances the car's sporty characteristics with firmer, more dynamic suspension and lowers the car with 20 mm. And in order to maximise your capability on rough roads, the Off road mode increases ground clearance by 40 mm. You can also create your own personal settings in the Individual mode and save them in the remote key memory. The modes are simple to switch between using the elegant and ergonomic roller control in the console between the front seats. To maintain comfort and driving characteristics in all circumstances, the air suspension constantly keeps the car at the same ride height and level regardless of the number of passengers or the weight of the cargo. At speeds above 100 km/h, the air suspension automatically lowers by the car 10 mm to reduce drag and further enhance high-speed stability. And to make it easier to get in and out of the car, you can easily lower the parked car by around 40 mm. When you have to load or unload heavy items or attach a trailer to the tow bar, you can lower the rear of the car with 50 mm by pushing a button inside the load area.

  • Transmission
    Eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission

Do you want an intuitive, responsive powertrain that feels like an extension of your senses? Mated to our all-new generation turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E engines, this eight-speed automatic transmission ensures you're always in the right gear – whether it's for optimal engine response and driveability, or for a smooth driving experience with the highest fuel-efficiency. And offering faster and more precise gear changes in the manual mode, our gearshift paddles will add even more fun behind the steering wheel.

    Gearshift paddles

If you enjoy driving, our new gearshift paddles for the automatic transmission will add even more fun behind the steering wheel. They offer faster and more precise manual gear changes. And by allowing you to keep your hands on the steering wheel, they also ensure you’re always 100 per cent in control of your car. (Only on R-Design)

    Start/Stop technology

Imagine how much energy could be saved if every car, at every traffic light in the world, switched off its engine… Our Start/Stop technology does just that. Once your engine has warmed up, and you bring your car to a halt, the engine automatically shuts off. And the instant you press the accelerator, the engine restarts and you’re on the go. It reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 8%. An extra battery ensures that all infotainment and comfort systems function as usual while the engine is off. The Start/Stop system can be deactivated in the centre display and is active between -5° and +30°C.

    All-wheel Drive (AWD)

The advanced AWD technology with Instant Traction™ helps increase driving stability and traction on all road surfaces, in all weather conditions. It has an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels, the throttle, engine torque, engine speed and the brakes. As driving conditions change, wheels with the best grip get the most power. When a tyre loses traction, power is reduced to that wheel and instantly transferred to the more sure-footed wheels. Under normal, dry conditions practically all the power is distributed to the front wheels to minimise fuel consumption without compromising on stability. And when needed, up to 50% of the engine's power can be distributed to the rear wheels. At standstill, full all-wheel drive is always engaged to prepare for maximum traction. This facilitates take-off in slippery conditions or if you for example pull a boat trailer up a ramp.

    Hill Start Assist

Hill Start Assist automatically keeps the brake pressure while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, so you’ll never slide backwards or stall your engine again when driving off up an incline. Hill Start Assist also works in reverse gear.

    Hill Descent Control

Hill Descent Control offers a smooth and controlled hill descent on steep, rough and slippery roads. Simply push the Hill Descent Control button and the vehicle will descend using the brake system to control each wheel’s rotating speed – you are then free to concentrate fully on steering. Hill Descent Control also makes it easier to move off when towing a heavy trailer or a boat on a trailer up a ramp. The technology also works in reverse gear.

  • Chassis & Steering
    Chassis

The chassis of your Volvo has been tuned to deliver a refined, smooth ride as well as sharp handling. All to give you a car that is just as comfortable and fun to drive on challenging country roads as it is on the highway. The advanced aluminium double wishbone suspensions at the front wheels provide perfectly balanced road holding and steering characteristics. At the rear, an exclusive Integral axle allows all characteristics to be individually tuned for your comfort and enjoyment. Extensive use of aluminium and a transverse lightweight leaf spring in composite material at the rear (unless the car is equipped with air-suspension) reduce the unsprung weight, which is essential for road holding and comfort. Reducing the total weight of the car, this also contributes to low fuel consumption. Very generous ground clearance and short overhangs contribute to an excellent performance on rough roads with a great ability to go off-road, too.

    Drive modes

To adapt the engine characteristics to your preferences or driving conditions, you can add a function that allows you to choose between different drive modes for the engine, gearbox and the optional air-suspension – Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, Off road and Individual mode. Comfort mode is programmed to give you maximum comfort. Eco mode calibrates the engine and gearbox for lowest possible fuel consumption. Dynamic mode is calibrated for sporty driving, with quick engine and gearbox responses. In this mode, the digital driver display changes automatically to the Sport setting to further enhance the experience. Off road mode can be set at speeds below 20 km/h to maximise the car's performance on poor roads and facilitate driving in difficult situations. Individual mode allows you to create your own personal drive mode and save it in your remote key memory. In Eco mode, the accelerator has a softer, less responsive function and the gearbox changes up at lower engine speeds. An Eco-Coast function helps the driver utilise the car's kinetic energy, and when the accelerator is released at speeds above 65 km/h there is no engine braking and the car rolls freely while saving fuel. This mode also turns off the air conditioning and reduces other auxiliary loads to minimise fuel consumption. In the Individual mode, you can tailor your own personal drive mode and store your settings in the remote control memory. Every time you open your car with that remote, the stored driving mode is activated. Using the ergonomic roller control in the centre console between the front seats, you conveniently switch between the different modes.

    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

Advanced petrol and diesel engine emission control

Going into action quickly after a cold start, Volvo’s advanced emission control eliminates between 95 and 99 per cent of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from petrol engine exhaust gases. The Volvo Drive-E turbodiesels feature a new type of catalytic converter that, apart from reduction of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, also absorbs nitrogen oxides and converts them into nitrogen (the main component of clean air). The particulate filter removes about 95 per cent of the particles from the diesel exhaust gases.

    Fuel-saving design

Better design really can make a difference. To reduce energy losses from wind and rolling resistance, we use advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials and low friction technology. Together with our state-of-the-art engines, this adds up to lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions for your car.

    Clean colours

To reduce usage of environmentally hazardous solvents, all Volvo exterior colours are water-based. What’s more, our painting facilities are among the cleanest in the world.

    95% recyclable

At Volvo, we strive to design our cars with maximum recyclability of all materials that go into them. At least 95% of the weight of a Volvo car can be recovered and 85% can be recycled – all to help minimise our cars’ total environmental impact during their life cycle.
