Driving off from standstill
Let’s assume you are at a standstill and the traffic lights turn green. Accelerate quickly, but try not to press down the pedal more than halfway as acceleration can be very fuel-consuming. Shift up as soon as possible. If you drive a petrol or LPG car, shift up before 3000 rpm, with a diesel before 2000 rpm. It is very efficient to shift from first to third gear in one step. A modern Volvo engine will work more efficiently when a high engine load is used.
Driving at a steady speed
The principle is to maintain a steady speed using the highest possible gear. Your Volvo has very low internal friction and low air resistance. The power needed to maintain a speed at 50 km/h is only around 5 kW. Try to avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking. This is easier if you anticipate the traffic flow by looking ahead as far as possible. Using the cruise control on highways makes it easier to drive smoothly.
Decelerate smoothly
Every time you use the brakes, you waste energy, just think about how hot the brakes can get. Try to use the car’s motion energy as much as possible. Use engine braking to reduce speed when closing in at a red light. The engine management system in your Volvo will cut off fuel supply when using the engine for braking.
