  • Volvo Car Group reaches landmark safety milestone: one million cars sold with pioneering auto brake technology

    The number of Volvos equipped with automatic braking systems has passed the one million mark - another milestone that confirms Volvo Car Group's world-leading position within automotive technology.

    Volvo Cars' technology for automatic braking includes several world firsts: City Safety, which is standard and works at speeds up to 50 km/h; Collision Warning with full auto brake; and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake.

    "Several recent reports state that our ground-breaking auto braking technologies help reduce the risk of being involved in a rear-end accident by more than 20 per cent. One million Volvos with auto brake on the roads take us towards our aim that nobody should be killed or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020," says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group.

      Volvo Car Group has developed an ingenious concept for autonomous parking. The concept car, which will be demonstrated at a media event next week, finds and parks in a vacant space by itself, without the driver inside. The smart, driverless car also interacts safely and smoothly with other cars and pedestrians in the car park.

          • Volvo Cars' pioneering work on pedestrian protection wins Global NCAP Innovation Award

            Volvo Car Group's pioneering work on pedestrian protection has been rewarded with the 2013 Global NCAP Innovation Award. The prize was received by Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre, at the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) Conference in Seoul, South Korea.
            At the ESV Conference, Prof. Lotta Jakobsson held a presentation about Volvo Cars' outstanding achievements within pedestrian protection. She presented a paper on the Pedestrian Airbag Technology in the new Volvo V40.
            "The purpose of the world's first airbag for pedestrians is to help protect these vulnerable road users in certain situations when they impact the bonnet and the area around the windscreen, where there may be a risk of serious head injuries," says Lotta Jakobsson.

                  Volvo has rolled out yet another world first in automotive history - technology that detects and automatically brakes for cyclists swerving out in front of the car.

                  This new function is a further evolution of Volvo’s current detection and auto brake technology. The new package will be called Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with full auto brake. All cars equipped with pedestrian detection will also incorporate cyclist detection.
