All-New Volvo XC60 impresses the world’s press

The world’s motoring experts have been lining up the plaudits after their first drive of the All-New Volvo XC60.

If first impressions are important, the All-New Volvo XC60 has made a sizeable imprint during its recent international media launch in Spain.

Motoring experts from across the world, including Australia, have begun publishing their first verdicts on our second-generation mid-sized luxury SUV – and the consistently warm reviews could thaw a Swedish winter.

I Roll has collated a selection of quotes from some of the world’s leading automotive opinion makers.

INTERIOR

All-New Volvo XC60 Review

Class leader

“From an interior design and quality point of view, the XC60 leads the class. This is another stunning Volvo interior, dominated as usual by a large nine-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen in the centre of the dash.” AutoExpress (UK)

Beautifully presented

“Stepping inside the XC60, the car offers a beautifully presented cabin likely to convince some customers to commit to the car without a test drive. Open and welcoming compared with its German rivals, the XC60's cabin has an airy levity helped by an expansive panoramic sunroof and large windows.” Drive.com.au

Luxuriously comfortable

“The interior, too, is like the XC90 lite: that is to say, properly luxurious and comfortable, with plenty of thoughtful elements and a technical edge to give the German brands a run for their money.” Caradvice.com.au

TECHNOLOGY

All-New Volvo XC60 Review

Awesome 360-degree technology

“The car has light steering that suits urban driving and make tight turns and parking a cinch. The 360-degree parking cameras are awesome — some of the best we’ve tested – and help make parking the car a hassle-free experience.” Motoring.com.au

Cool technology

“The D5 also buys you an extremely cool piece of technology, dubbed Power Pulse… It’s a smart, effective and relatively cheap way to overcome a problem [turbo lag] that has tested engineers for years.” Wheels magazine (Australia)

Reassuring assistance

“We tried out the Steering Assist by initiating lane changes that could have proven dangerous and felt the system reassuringly tucking back into the lane. The Pilot Assist system … is highly useful when sightseeing or perhaps talking to a passenger while your hands are on the wheel, as it gently helps keep the vehicle centered in the lane.” Motor Trend (US)

DRIVING

All-New Volvo XC60 Review

Exemplary ride

“Ride quality on the air springs is exemplary, despite the optional 20-inch alloys fitted to these test vehicles.” Wheels magazine

Remarkable refinement

“Ensconced within the Volvo’s leather-lined cabin, it was remarkably quiet on all surfaces we drove it on – even gravel. The XC60 can perform plenty of new party tricks now, including autonomous braking and lane-keeping, and it’ll attempt swerve around other cars even if the driver does nothing.” Motoring.com.au

Relaxed. Composed

“Engineers elected to imbue the car with a relaxed overall character and a composed but not overly sharp dynamic setting that customers might choose to use on an everyday basis, rather than impressing mates for five minutes in the first week of ownership. It works.” Drive.com.au

Well balanced

“Run through a succession of quick corners, and [the XC60] feels sportier than before and well balanced for an SUV. Set in Dynamic mode, it also ably resists roll and admirably controls body motions.” Car and Driver (US)

Unruffled progress

“We even decided to head off the planned drive route, with its marble-smooth road surfaces, and find some pockmarked coarse-chip and even a soft gravel track, and neither upset the comfort and quietude of the XC60.” Caradvice.com.au

OVERVIEW

All-New Volvo XC60 Review

Premium placing

“The XC60 is another car that confirms Volvo’s place among the world’s premium brands.” AutoExpress (UK)

Great all-rounder

“The second-generation Volvo XC60 is a great all-rounder and one of the best large SUVs on the market. Not all that long ago, the Swedish brand was viewed very much as a cut-price alternative to the premium German trident of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Well, these days Volvo is no longer knocking on the door of that exclusive club – it's partying hard inside.” What Car? (UK)

Beautifully honed

“In pinpointing what its target clientele wants and ruthlessly jettisoning any peripheral attractions, the XC60 is a beautifully-honed thing.” Wheels magazine

Measurable luxury

“A luxury car in every measurable way, the XC60 offers sharp looks, a beautiful cabin, innovative drivetrains and more technology than most of its rivals.” Drive.com.au

I Roll

Volvo is Latin for 'I roll' and was originally trademarked in 1915 with ball bearing production in mind. But 18 million cars later, Volvo has come to mean much more.

Volvo started making cars in 1927 because we believed nobody else was making them strong enough or safe enough for Swedish roads. Along the way we’ve come up with dozens of innovations, some of which have changed the world. And it’s this proud history that continues our drive forward to the next great Volvo Cars idea.
