The Chefs’ Line
A group of humble home cooks who are quietly confident and talented enough to stand the heat of the kitchen are taking on some of the best chefs in Australia, in new SBS television show The Chefs’ Line.
Volvo Cars is a sponsor of this David-versus-Goliath-style programme that sets out to explore the heritage, history and diversity driving Australia’s restaurant scene by focusing on a different culture and cuisine each week.
Cuisines covered include Thai, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Lebanese. Each week the programme will also take us inside the kitchen of a featured restaurant in every state dedicated to the chosen cuisine, unlocking some of its secrets.
Contestants include a Spanish cook who got all their recipes from their family, and a contestant who only discovered Thai food a decade ago but has been cooking it every day since.
The Chefs’ Line presenting team is anchored by Maeve O’Meara, with judges comprising Sydney executive chef Dan Hong of Mr Wong and Mr G’s fame, renowned Indigenous chef Mark Olive, and food writer Melissa Leong.
Dan Hong says The Chefs’ Line will appeal to inner foodies with its different approach to other popular cooking shows.
“Shows like Masterchef and My Kitchen Rules are a lot about the drama, the personalities, and getting to know the characters. But with The Chefs’ Line, these cooks are only there for a week, so at the end of the day it’s a celebration of a certain cuisine each week,” he said.
“We’re showing how multicultural Australia is and how food brings everyone together. The best way to understand another person’s culture is through food.”
The Chefs’ Line features at 6pm weeknights on SBS, with the series running until early July.
