Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival
The best movies from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland will again be projected onto Australian screens this winter, courtesy of the Volvo Scandinavian Film Festival.
An array of films from Europe’s famous northern region will be presented from mid-July to early August by Palace Cinemas in all the nation’s state capitals.
The line-up comprises 20 films covering genres including drama, black comedy and action thriller, with many of the features receiving nominations and awards.
Highlight feature films from each of the Scandinavian countries include:
SMALL TOWN KILLERS (DENMARK)
In this Danish black comedy with a hint of the Coen Brothers’ Fargo, the tables are turned on two tradesmen in a small rural town after they attempt to end their loveless marriages and enjoy their stash of cash by hiring a Russian hit-man to take out their wives. THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE (FINLAND)
The lives of two men both looking for a change of life in different ways become intertwined in this internationally acclaimed, highly topical film from Finland. When a Syrian refugee’s application for asylum in Finland is rejected, he decides to stay illegally. When a new restaurant owner discovers the refugee sleeping in the storage space behind his business, an unlikely friendship is formed. Click here to learn more.
HEARTSTONE (ICELAND)
Iceland’s single representation at the Scandinavian Film Festival is a big one – the emotionally gripping Heartstone that has won 26 international awards. In this coming-of-age drama, the relationship of inseparable best friends Thor and Christen is tested when they start going out with local girls Beth and Hanna. Click here to learn more.
THE KING’S CHOICE (NORWAY)
This World War II drama is based on true events of 1940 when Norway’s king is faced with an ultimatum to effectively hand rule to the Nazis by making a conspiring collaborator the country’s prime minister, or risk bloodshed by resisting the invasion of German forces. A HUSTLER’S DIARY (SWEDEN)
A petty criminal has the chance to turn into a star when a top publishing house wants to publish his misplaced secret journal, but there could be consequences for the people he details in his writings about his “stuck in a rut” suburban Stockholm life.
