Volvo’s styling chief voted ‘Design Hero’
This high praise came from the editor of world-renowned car magazine Autocar, inventors of the original road test, after the publication voted Volvo Cars’ Chief Design Officer, Thomas Ingenlath, a ‘Design Hero’ at its prestigious 2017 awards.
Editor Mark Tisshaw added that “great design is what brings the car industry to a wider audience”, noting how Ingenlath has contributed to turning Volvo into a “fully-fledged luxury brand”.
The Autocar Award is recognition for modern Volvo styling that takes traditional Scandinavian design cues – such as clean, simple lines and controlled surfaces – and combines them with classic proportions, striking details, the finest natural cabin materials, and skilled craftsmanship. The result is a distinctive range of premium cars that are luxurious, elegant, and a relaxing place in which to travel.
Ingenlath has been at Volvo since 2012 and has led a team of designers that have revolutionised Volvo design – starting with the XC90 seven-seat SUV in 2014, and closely followed by the S90 sedan, V90 Cross Country wagon, and the upcoming All-New XC60 mid-sized SUV.
“It is a great honour to receive this award from such an influential motoring title as Autocar,” said Ingenlath. “Volvo’s new design language is Scandinavian design at its best: form with function, and genuine beauty. That the hard work of everyone involved in designing Volvos has been recognised in such a way is a fantastic achievement.”
Thomas’s role has recently been expanded to incorporate Chief Executive Officer of Polestar – Volvo’s performance division that will become a separately branded company focused on electrified high-performance cars. While he will also continue to oversee Volvo styling as Chief Design Officer, his former position of Senior Vice President Design is assumed by Robin Page, formerly Volvo’s head of interior design.
