Volvo XC60 wins 2018 Wheels Car of the Year
Volvo Cars’ mid-sized luxury SUV progressed successfully through three rounds of judging to beat a 22-strong field that included two direct competitors, the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
The company’s first win in what is the world’s longest continuously running Car of the Year award coincides with Volvo’s aim to establish itself as the world’s most progressive premium car maker.
Wheels’ seven Car of the Year judges assessed every contender against five criteria: Function, Technology, Efficiency, Safety, Value.
The judges were universal in their praise of Volvo’s progressive luxury SUV.
“You can see and feel the love and care devoted to the XC60 during its development, not to mention Volvo’s ambition,” wrote Wheels Senior Journalist, Nathan Ponchard. “And the result is a terrific family SUV – at once both safe, stylish, good value and fun to drive – as well as a deserving Car of the Year winner.”
“The first-class interior is Stockholm cool,” said Byron Mathioudakis.
“A full suite of active safety aids, a superb surround-view camera and excellent seats with well-positioned bolsters and head restraints imbue the XC60 with an aura of in-cabin safety reminiscent of its pioneering ancestors,” wrote Wheels.
“The in-cabin warmth and detail finish elevate the XC60 beyond its premium-brand rivals,” the magazine continued.
“At the [proving ground], the XC60 immediately impressed with its stunning interior presentation on walk-through day, followed by its dynamics on the ride and handling course.”
Stephen Connor, acting Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the Wheels Car of The Year for the first time in our long history as a brand in Australia. When we launched XC60 in Australia last October, we knew it ticked all the boxes for performance, styling, safety and value.
"Winning the Car of The Year Award is the icing on the cake."
The 2018 Wheels Car of The Year Award continues a big year for the All-New Volvo XC60. Locally, it has also been the recipient of two awards from Fairfax Media, publisher of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age: Drive Car of the Year Best Luxury SUV Under $80,000 and Safety Innovation.
Internationally, the XC60 won the noted 2018 SUV of The Year in North America – following the XC90’s win in 2016 – while Euro NCAP rated the mid-sized Volvo luxury SUV the “best overall performer” in its 2017 independent crash-testing program.
XC60’s smaller cousin, the new XC40, isn’t missing out, either, having collected its own Car of the Year award from the UK’s highly popular WhatCar? magazine.
