XC60 trophy haul grows with Best Cars award

Volvo’s luxury SUVs dominated the Best AWD SUV ($65,000 to $125,000) category of the 2018 Australia’s Best Cars awards, with the XC60 and XC90 securing an impressive one-two.

The Volvo XC60 has won its sixth major local award after the mid-sized luxury SUV was judged Best AWD SUV $65,000 to $125,000 in the 2018 Australia’s Best Cars programme.

Australia’s Best Cars is a comprehensive and independent consumer-focused vehicle testing programme, judging vehicles for design and function, on-road performance, and value for money.

The awards are run by the country’s state motoring clubs: New South Wales’ NRMA, Victoria’s RACV, Queensland’s RACQ, South Australia’s RAA, Western Australia’s RAC, Tasmania’s RACT and the Northern Territory’s AANT.
The XC60 D4 Inscription – which just pipped another impressive Volvo luxury SUV, the larger XC90 D5 Inscription – was praised in multiple areas by the Best Cars judges.

“As an extremely drivable vehicle with a comfortable and luxurious interior, the judges just kept piling on the scores…” wrote the judges’ summary, which added that the XC60 offered the best-value package in its class.

The summary also kept piling on the plaudits as it went into more detail about what made the XC60 a stand-out luxury SUV.

“The cabin has a very upmarket feel, with a mix of woodgrain panels, leather and brushed-metal accents, and intricately cut speaker grilles and shaped air vents. The quality of the seats, both in their materials and comfort, is class-leading…

“The all-wheel-drive system is fitted across the range and driving was surprisingly smooth. On the bitumen you aren’t really conscious that you’re driving an SUV and would swear you’re instead driving a well-behaved and competent-handling sedan.”

Judges noted the XC60’s ability to make occupants feel “cosseted in the quiet, safe and comfortable cabin” when driving off-road.

Best Cars also highlighted the XC60’s “user-friendly” tailgate that can be opened with a simple swipe of a foot under the rear bumper, as well as its “pioneering safety technology” that helps drivers reduce the risk of an accident or injury in a range of potential-collision scenarios.

Nick Connor, managing director of Volvo Car Australia, said: “We are thrilled that Australia’s leading independent motoring clubs have judged the Volvo XC60 the best SUV in the luxury category.

“Volvo has a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic SUVs that offer the latest in technology. The new XC60 is no exception, even by our already high standards.”

The 2018 Australia’s Best Cars result adds further critical success for the Volvo XC60, which has enjoyed a remarkable run of awards since its release in October 2017. Awards include Drive’s 2017 Best Luxury SUV under $80,000 and 2017 Safety and Innovation Award, as well as the highly prestigious 2018 Wheels Car of the Year.

The Volvo XC60 is also the reigning World Car of the Year.
