Volvo XC90 Recharge wins in inaugural WhatCar Electric Car Awards

The plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s luxury seven-seater SUV has claimed one of the honours in new UK motoring awards focused on electrified vehicles.
The Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 has been awarded Best Hybrid Seven-Seater in the inaugural Electric Car Awards from highly respected car-review brand WhatCar.

The UK motoring magazine and website established the awards for 2020 as a response to fast-growing sales of electric cars. In the first six months of this year, WhatCar says sales of fully electric vehicles have grown 159 per cent compared with the same period in 2019.

The awards cover not just pure electric vehicles but also plug-in hybrid vehicles capable of providing at least 20 miles (32km) of zero-emissions motoring.

Although the XC90 luxury seven-seater SUV plug-in hybrid was essentially in a class on its own, WhatCar said the Volvo “is absolutely deserving of recognition in these awards because of the outstanding plug-in package it offers beyond its seven seats”.

“Luxurious, spacious and quick, the Recharge T8 provides plenty of reasons to recommend it. Not least, the fact you should be able to cover around 20 miles in real-world driving conditions on pure electric power alone.

“When you aren’t trying to conserve range, there’s great performance on offer, too. The 0-62mph (0-100km/h) dash is covered in just 5.8sec and the XC90 feels more agile in corners [compared with some rivals]. It’s great on longer journeys, too, riding smoothly on motorways.

XC90 R-Design Interior
“Inside is where the XC90 really shines, though. The suave Scandinavian interior offers plenty of glossy black and chrome finishes that make it look as flash as anything this side of a Bentley, and the materials used are great. Plus, you sit nice and high, with fine visibility all round.”

WhatCar said the XC90’s third row of seats isn’t a “short-straw draw” like many seven-seaters, while it praised the Volvo’s boot space.

“All in all, its practicality and performance make the XC90 one of the most versatile plug-in hybrids going.”

The Volvo XC90 Recharge is the company’s flagship SUV in Australia.

Powered by a combination of a 246kW/440Nm supercharged/turbocharged petrol engine and 65kW/240Nm electric motor, the all-wheel-drive XC90 Recharge delivers the best of both worlds: great performance and great fuel economy.

Official fuel consumption is rated at just 2.1 litres per 100km*.
