Your Guide to Fuel Efficient Cars

At Volvo, we design fuel-efficient cars. We have been introducing Drive-E engines to our range with the goal of delivering more power for less fuel.

Volvo fuel efficiency

At Volvo, we understand automotive efficiency and what it means for our cars, the environment, and Volvo owners. We have a desire to make our entire range as fuel efficient as possible, which is why Volvos are offered with advanced Drive-E powertrains that combine great driveability and low consumption and emissions – as well as plug-in hybrids that deliver impressive performance and economy.

Volvo Drive-E engines

Fuel efficient cars are an essential part of Volvo innovations. That is why Drive-E engines have made their way into Volvo vehicles across Australia. These new powertrains are small but extremely powerful, representing great progress in automotive efficiency. Fuel efficient vehicles are all about using less energy to produce a better driver experience and deliver lower fuel consumption and emissions. These Drive-E engines not only emit less harmful exhaust gases but also lower running costs without compromising on-road performance.

The impact of fuel efficiency

Fuel efficiency affects everyone. At Volvo, we always consider our responsibility to the environment. Drive-E engines help create fuel-efficient cars and SUVs. This progress reaffirms our belief in cleaner car design and performance. The introduction of our new Drive-E engines and eight-speed automatic transmissions to the Australian range has made the S60, V60, and XC60 more resourceful with fuel while maintaining world-class performance and safety. Our all-new XC90 also includes fuel-efficient powertrains – including the T8 that combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to achieve outstanding official consumption of just 2.1 litres per 100km.

Volvo leads the way

At Volvo, we have always prided ourselves on designing fuel-efficient cars. At Volvo we always consider our responsibility to the environment, and in 1976 we invented the Lambda Sond – a finger-sized oxygen-sensing probe that reduced harmful exhaust emissions by 90 per cent. It was such a breakthrough in the fight for a cleaner environment that we shared our invention with the other car makers.

Today, our Drive-E petrol and diesel engines, teamed with our clever eight-speed automatic transmissions, have helped create fuel-efficient cars and SUVs without compromising performance.

This approach to fuel efficiency is epitomised by our T8 Twin Engine – a plug-in hybrid that combines a turbocharged/supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to achieve outstanding official consumption as low as 2.0 litres per 100km*. It will be joined by a T5 Twin Engine – a powertrain designed specifically for a new generation of compact Volvo hybrid cars.

In 2017, Volvo Cars again demonstrated its industry leadership by announcing the electrification of all future models from 2019 onwards. The Volvo showroom of the future will comprise fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and mild-hybrids – ending an era of cars powered exclusively by an internal combustion engine.
