Volvo leads the way
At Volvo, we have always prided ourselves on designing fuel-efficient cars. At Volvo we always consider our responsibility to the environment, and in 1976 we invented the Lambda Sond – a finger-sized oxygen-sensing probe that reduced harmful exhaust emissions by 90 per cent. It was such a breakthrough in the fight for a cleaner environment that we shared our invention with the other car makers.
Today, our Drive-E petrol and diesel engines, teamed with our clever eight-speed automatic transmissions, have helped create fuel-efficient cars and SUVs without compromising performance.
This approach to fuel efficiency is epitomised by our T8 Twin Engine – a plug-in hybrid that combines a turbocharged/supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor to achieve outstanding official consumption as low as 2.0 litres per 100km*. It will be joined by a T5 Twin Engine – a powertrain designed specifically for a new generation of compact Volvo hybrid cars.
In 2017, Volvo Cars again demonstrated its industry leadership by announcing the electrification of all future models from 2019 onwards. The Volvo showroom of the future will comprise fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and mild-hybrids – ending an era of cars powered exclusively by an internal combustion engine.
