The future of driving
How Volvo Cars can change your life
We’re redefining how to get from A to B
We want to provide you with freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way. So we put your needs first – using the latest technology that helps in your everyday life. We’ll invent new technology where none already exists and combine technologies to create new experiences.
Our ambitions are focused on people, safety and sustainability:
No one should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car.
Around 50 per cent of the cars we produce and sell will be electric by 2025.
Plus we want a 40% lower carbon footprint per car by 2025.
It’s time to change
We’ve been advancing road safety for nearly a century. Our current Volvo models are packed with safety technology and are among the safest cars to have ever existed. The next revolution in improving traffic safety is the biggest challenge of all: research indicates that driver behaviour must be addressed to further reduce fatalities and injuries on our roads. The three behavioural issues that are the cause of many serious accidents are speeding, intoxication and distraction.
Three challenges for road safety
Poor speed adaptation in certain traffic situations results in reduced control while driving. Speeding remains one of the main causes of traffic fatalities.
Driver intoxication represents one of the most severe dangers to traffic safety. Lack of focus and slow reaction times caused by intoxication can immensely affect driving capabilities and as a result lead to severe injuries or death.
Distraction is a risk factor for all drivers and is a major concern for road safety. Similar to the risks of intoxication, distraction can lead to slower reaction times and loss of control while driving.
Supporting safer driving
By taking the lead in road safety research for decades, we’ve learned from studying tens of thousands of real-world accidents and have identified the importance of addressing these three key areas of people’s behaviour. We’re committed to finding ways to support people in becoming the best drivers they can be.
We know from experience that advanced safety innovations can make the difference. Innovations that support drivers when they need it most – intuitive technology that works together with drivers, not against them. The aim is to detect dangerous driving behaviour and support with corrective actions when needed.
We’ve recently introduced our Care Key initiative, aimed at addressing speeding, one of the main challenges of road safety. Volvo drivers can use the Care Key to set limits on the car’s top speed, making it easier to maintain a safe speed when the car is lent to younger and inexperienced drivers. The Care Key is now standard in all new Volvo cars from this year and reflects our ambition to support better driver behaviour.
Every new Volvo car now comes with a limited top speed of 180kph as we deliver on our promise to introduce such a top speed limitation – because speeding is one of the main traffic safety risk factors. Motivating drivers to reduce their speed is just one part of our commitment to taking an active responsibility in striving to achieve zero traffic fatalities by supporting better driver behaviour.
We’re working on in-car solutions to help address two of the main traffic safety risk factors: distraction and intoxication. In-car cameras, together with other sensors, will enable the car to support the driver via Volvo on Call and when a clearly intoxicated or distracted driver is risking serious injury or death, the car will pull over to a safe stop. This upcoming technology is intended to support drivers in extreme situations where they’re losing the ability to control the car in a safe way.
