IntelliSafe safety check when starting

When you start the car after it has been switched off completely, a safety check of the car's driver support systems is shown in the driver display. This is a new visual function that is being added with software to be released in November 2017.

The remote control key's key blade and replacing the battery

The remote control key contains a detachable key blade that can be used, among other things, to unlock the left-hand front door if the battery in the remote control key is weak or discharged. You can replace the battery in your remote control key yourself.

Driver profiles

In order for your Volvo to be customized for you every time you get into the car, you have the option to save and protect your personal preferences in driver profiles. The driver profiles can be associated with the car's keys and when unlocking occurs the car settings are adjusted to the driver profile associated with the key being used.

Activating data sharing when starting a connected service or app

If you have not activated data sharing for a connected service or for downloaded apps, you can do this when starting them in your center display. The first time you start a service, or after e.g. a factory reset or certain software updates, you must also accept Volvo's terms and conditions for connected services.

Valet locking

When you leave your car for a service, at a hotel or similar, you can use the valet locking function to lock the glove box, trunk, luggage compartment lid, tailgate or rear seat. The valet locking function varies depending on car model.

Goo to know about the car's windows

All the car's power windows can be controlled from the driver's door and the respective door window can be controlled from the other respective doors. For certain models it is also possible to choose panoramic roof.

Data sharing settings for Volvo On Call

Data sharing for the Volvo On Call service is activated as default. This means that you do not have to activate data sharing for this service when you buy a new vehicle or after e.g. a factory reset.

Error messages from the tire pressure monitoring system in the instrument panel, e.g. after tire change or low inflation pressure

If you see the message Check Car Status app in center display in your instrument panel, you need to calibrate/save a new inflation pressure in the tire pressure monitoring system.

You can easily cancel an ongoing route in the center display.

Settings for privacy and data sharing are unique for each driver profile

When you begin to use a new driver profile, the data sharing settings for the profile are set to the vehicle's default settings and are deactivated.

IntelliSafe - driver support and safety

IntelliSafe is Volvo Cars thinking about car safety and consists of a number of features that actively or passively help you with your driving in different situations. For example, the functions can help you to maintain a certain time interval to the vehicle in front of you, prevent a collision by giving a warning and braking the car, or help with parking.

IntelliSafe - Support

IntelliSafe incorporates supporting functions that can help you to drive your car more safely. Below you can find information about the driver support functions Volvo offers.

Note

Some of the functions are fitted as standard whilst others are optional. This may vary depending on market, model year and car model.

Pilot Assist

Pilot Assist can help you to keep the vehicle between the lane's side markings and maintain a constant speed combined with a preset time interval to the vehicle ahead.

Blind Spot Information

The Blind Spot Information (BLIS) function is designed to provide assistance in heavy traffic with several lanes moving in the same direction by alerting the driver to the presence of vehicles in the "blind spot" area behind and to the side of the vehicle.

Cross Traffic Alert

Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) can warn you about crossing traffic when backing up. CTA is a supplement to Blind Spot Information (BLIS).For the XC40 of model year 2018 onwards, CTA is equipped with the auto-brake function. See your Owner's Manual for more information.

Park assist

Parking assistance can help you to park in tight spaces by indicating the distance to obstacles with acoustic signals combined with graphics on the center display.

Active park assist

The Park Assist Pilot function Park Assist Pilot (PAP) can, in certain cases, help you park or leave a parking space by providing steering assistance when pulling into or out of a parking space.

Park assist camera

The Park Assist Camera can help you when parking in tight spaces by indicating obstacles with a camera image and graphics in the center display.

The Road Sign Information function Road Sign Information (RSI) can help you to observe speed signs and certain prohibition signs as you pass them.

Electronic Stability Control

Electronic Stability Control Electronic Stability Control (ESC) can help you to avoid skidding and improve the car's traction, and it consists of the following functions:

Adaptive cruise control

Adaptive Cruise Control Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) can help you to maintain a constant speed, combined with a preset time interval to the vehicle in front.

Cruise Control Cruise Control (CC) can help you to maintain a constant speed, which can provide more relaxed driving on highways and long, straight roads with regular traffic flows.

Rear Collision Warning

Rear Collision Warning (RCW) is a system that can help you avoid being hit from behind by passing vehicles.

Driver Alert Control

Driver Alert Control (DAC) is a function designed to catch the driver's attention if he/she starts driving erratically, for example, if the driver is distracted or starts to fall asleep.

Roll Stability Control

XC40, XC60 and XC90 models only.

Roll Stability Control, RSC is a stabilizer system that, in certain situations, can help to reduce the risk of overturning, for example, during sudden evasive maneuvers or if the vehicle skids.

Automatic dipped beam

Automatic high beam is a function that uses a camera sensor at the top edge of the windshield that can detect the headlamp beams of oncoming traffic or the rear lights of vehicles in front, and then switches from high to low beam. The function can also sense street lighting.

Tunnel detection

Tunnel detection means that the car can detect when it is driven into a tunnel and then shifts automatically from daytime running lights to low beam.

All wheel drive

All-wheel drive (AWDAll Wheel Drive) means that power is distributed to all four wheels at the same time, which can improve traction.

Warning

The functions described here are supplementary aids - they cannot manage all situations in all conditions.

The driver is always responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is driven in a safe manner and in accordance with applicable traffic rules and regulations.

Lane assist

Lane keeping Aid (LKALane Keeping Aid) can help you on highways and similar large roads to reduce the risk of the vehicle inadvertently veering from its own lane.

Collision avoidance assistance

The Collision Avoidance function can help the driver to reduce the risk of the car accidentally leaving its lane and/or colliding with another vehicle or obstacle by actively steering the car back into the lane and/or swerving.

The Collision Avoidance function consists of three sub-functions:

  • Steering assist with run-off mitigation
  • Steering assistance upon risk of head-on
  • Steering assistance during collision risks from behind

    Option/accessory. Does not apply to the S60, V60 and XC40. See the Owner's Manual for your vehicle for more information on how steering assistance during collision risks can assist you.

City Safety

City Safety is a function that can help prevent or mitigate a collision with pedestrians, cyclists, larger animals or vehicles. Visual, acoustic and brake pulse warnings are given in the event of a risk of collision to help you act in time. If the system detects that the driver's reaction to the warning is not sufficient and the risk of collision remains, braking assistance can be activated to augment braking. If braking or an evasive maneuver can still not be initiated, City Safety can also activate auto-brake to automatically brake the vehicle.

IntelliSafe Safety

Your Volvo is equipped with several interacting functions whose purpose, in certain situations, is to protect driver and passengers in the event of an accident.

Among other things, your Volvo is equipped with a number of detectors that can react in the event of an accident and activate various functions, such as different types of airbag and the seatbelt tensioner. Depending on the specific accident situation, such as collisions at different angles, rollover or driving off the road, the functions can react in different ways in order to provide protection.

In addition, there are purely mechanical features such as Whiplash Protection System and Pedestrian Protection System. The car is also built so that a large part of the force of a collision is distributed to members, pillars, floor, roof and other parts of the body.

Airbags

Your Volvo is equipped with airbags that can help protect the driver's and passenger's heads, necks, faces, chests, knees and legs. The vehicle is also equipped with inflatable curtains for driver and passengers. The inflatable curtains are installed along both sides of the inside of the roof and helps protect occupants in the vehicle's outer seats. The side airbags are fitted in the outer backrest frames of the front seats and can help to protect the driver and passenger in the front seats. The side airbags on the driver and passenger seats can protect the chest and hips in the event of a collision.

Safety belt pre-tensioners

Your vehicle is equipped with standard and electrical safety belt tensioners that can pull the seat belts taut in critical situations and collisions.

Child safety

Using Volvo's child safety equipment allows a child to travel safely in the car. In addition, the child safety equipment fits well and is easy to use.

Children of all ages and sizes must always sit correctly secured in the car. Never allow a child to sit on the lap of a passenger.

Privacy and data sharing

Many connected services and apps need to be able to send and receive information and data. The data sharing function for your connected services and apps is deactivated as default. To use certain connected services and apps in the vehicle, you must manually activate data sharing for them.

New procedures for replacing rear wiper blade

If you have had your car in for a service and a service technician replaced the wiper arm for the rear wiper blade, the procedure for replacing the windshield wiper is different.

How do I notice that a safety function has been activated?

If you feel that the car behaves in a way you had not expected, it may be because one of the car's safety features has been activated.

Find the car's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

In the event of contacting a Volvo dealer, for example about a Volvo On Call subscription, you must state the car's identification number VIN, (Vehicle Identification Number).

Automatic start of seat heating

The function for automatic start of seat heating varies depending on car model and differs between the driver's and passenger sides.

Associate driver profile to key

Personal settings for the seats, climate, audio, navigation and communication can be saved in the driver profiles and associate with one of the car's keys.

A dynamic symbol in the driver display

In Volvo's driver display there is a dynamic symbol that changes appearance if a function is activated or if the car needs your attention.
