    Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Imagine that you’re in the passing lane on a high-speed motorway. Your car starts to weave; at first you’re baffled and then it dawns on you. One of your rear tyres is dangerously low on pressure – with any luck, you’ll make it safely to the hard shoulder. It’s a terrifying scenario, and one of the reasons why we developed our tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which uses sensors mounted in each tyre valve. If you’re travelling at 30km/h or more and any one of your tyres is underinflated you’ll get plenty of warning.

    Volvo Full-LED Active Beam

Journeys after dark have just become a lot more enjoyable – and safer – thanks to our new Full-LED Active Beam, available as an option. Advanced LED light technology allows a supremely wide and long light pattern – the light is more than twice as strong as conventional halogen lights. And helping you to see around corners at night, the lights turn up to 30 degrees in either direction with the steering. And with this system, you don’t need to keep flicking between low and high beam*, which is not only annoying – according to several studies, it’s also a major cause of night-time accidents. With our new system, your headlights stay on high beam all the time. When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system prevents dazzling the other driver by shading out only as much of your beam as necessary – no more, no less. Still, the LED headlights will illuminate the areas around the other car with high beam. The same applies to cars in front of you. The system can even recognise pedestrians and cyclists and avoids dazzling them, too – it can keep track of ten separate objects at the same time. And because the system is intelligent, the high beam shuts off when you enter a city, but if you drive past an illuminated sign – say a filling station or supermarket – it stays on so you can see what’s coming up. This means you benefit from safety as well as convenience. During daytime, the distinctive hammer shaped light-guides not only act as daytime running lights to make your car more conspicuous – they also flash in a warm colour when indicating. And when the dipped headlights are needed for illumination, they are automatically engaged by a twilight sensor. Contributing to improved fuel economy and lower running costs, the LED lights are extremely energy efficient and last the lifetime of the car without losing any luminance.

*Applies for Full-LED Active Beam technology. Cars with halogen lights shift automatically between high and low beam.

    Emergency Brake light (EBL)

We’ve all been on the motorway when the car in front unexpectedly brakes hard and then you have to brake even harder, while praying that the car behind you reacts in time. Wouldn’t you like to have some way of making sure traffic behind knows there’s a problem? Well, that’s our Emergency Brake Light, which works above 50km/h and knows the difference between normal and panic braking. If it is a panic stop, the brake lights will flash at a rate of four times per second, which will telegraph a clear message to following traffic that there’s a potential problem ahead. Once you slow to below 10km/h, the brake lights stop pulsing and your hazard lights take over.

    Image2
    Fog lamp with cornering function

At speeds of up to 40 km/h, the optional fog lamp with cornering function illuminates the area in which you’re turning at up to 15 degrees around the car for safer manoeuvring – for instance if you’re parking, turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night. And to enhance your control during reversing in the dark, the cornering light activates on both sides to illuminate the area around your car.

    City Safety collision avoidance technology

We know that you want to a avoid collisions under all circumstances. And it only takes a moment’s distraction to find your self in just such a scenario. Using advanced radar and camera technology, our refined City Safety collision avoidance system constantly scans the road ahead for other vehicles as well as pedestrians and cyclists. Active at all speeds and light conditions, City Safety gives you audible and visible warnings if you’re too close to a vehicle in front or if there are pedestrians or cyclists in your path. If you don’t react and a collision is imminent, full auto-braking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. Simultaneously, the safety belts are prepared to help minimise the strain on your body if a collision can't be avoided. Moreover, if you should make a turn in front of an on-coming vehicle in a crossing the City Safety system will brake your Volvo automatically if you don't. This is a Volvo world-first designed to help you avoid this type of dangerous collision. City Safety is active in daylight as well as in the dark – particularly helpful since pedestrians and cyclists often are difficult to see in the dark. When the speed difference between your car and the vehicle in front of you is up to 50 km/h the system will help you avoid a collision by automatic braking. At higher speed differences, the collision will be mitigated.

    Image2
    Auto brake at intersections

You know the situation: you are about to make a turn in a crossing with oncoming cars at high speeds. If you for some reason should make the turn despite these circumstances, the City Safety system in your Volvo will detect a potential collision and brake your Volvo automatically if you don't. This is a Volvo world-first designed to help you avoid or mitigate this type of dangerous collision.

    Image2
    Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

It can happen so easily; you’re on a long motorway trip, or momentarily distracted and you wander briefly out of your lane. This puts you in danger of collision, or of simply going off the road on your own. It doesn’t bear thinking about, but your Volvo can help with the Lane Departure Warning system. When you’re driving over 65km/h, a camera looks at the lane markings and can tell if you wander out of your lane. If you do, you will be alerted with vibrations in the steering wheel or an audible sound. But if you use indicators to signal a lane change, LDW will stay silent.

    Image2
    Driver Alert Control (DAC)

You know the scenario. Maybe you’ve had a long day at the office or possibly too many hours behind the wheel, and your attention begins to waver. This is a danger zone that we’ve given a lot of thought to, because distracted drivers cause up to 90 per cent of all accidents. That’s why we’ve developed Driver Alert Control (DAC) to help distracted drivers at speeds over 65km/h. A camera looks at the road ahead while DAC checks on your steering inputs to see how they compare to your regular driving style. If it senses that you’re driving more erratically, or there are signs that you’re drowsy or distracted, it’ll give you an audible warning and a message on the instrument panel suggesting you take a break.

    Image2
    Automatic braking after a collision

Helping to reduce the risk for more damage and injury after a collision – like hitting other cars or people – your Volvo brakes automatically when the safety belt pre-tensioners or an airbag are activated.

    Image2
    Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)

We’ve all experienced that nasty little shock as we’re changing lanes and suddenly realise that there’s another vehicle in our blind spot. That’s why we have developed Blind Spot Information System, BLIS, to give you total awareness. The rear-mounted radar sensors cover a large area behind the car and work in various sorts of weather and light conditions, day or night. As a vehicle enters your blind spot, this function can alert you via a warning light in the door mirror glass – left and right. Together with the door mirrors, which include a wide-angle mirror on the driver side, this helps you assess the feasibility of a lane change. BLIS is activated once the car exceeds 12 km/h and reacts to almost any type of vehicle, including motorcycles.

Anti-locking brakes with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) and Ready Alert Brakes

When you’ve been caught by surprise by another car pulling out of a junction unexpectedly, that’s when large anti-lock ventilated disc brakes really come into their own – shorter stopping distances at times like this make all the difference. And if you find yourself travelling down a mountain road with the need to brake often and hard, you’ll welcome our brakes’ resistance to fading. But since there is always a risk of fade, your Volvo is prepared for this, too, with Fading Brake Support (FBS). This system gradually builds hydraulic brake pressure so that you always have reassuring pedal feel. But what if you find yourself having to brake in an emergency, and perhaps not applying the necessary pressure to the pedal? Well, we’ve developed Hydraulic Brake Assist, which ensures maximum braking pressure is applied hydraulically during a panic stop. Likewise, if you suddenly lift off the accelerator or sensors detect an obstacle in front of the car, Ready Alert Brakes instantly move the brake pads closer to the brake discs to reduce the braking distance. And Electronic Brake Distribution ensures that the right amount of braking goes to the front and rear of the your Volvo depending on where the load in the car is distributed and what the road conditions are. The braking system of your Volvo also contributes to your convenience when you're at standstill in different conditions. An automatic hold function ensures the brakes will be kept engaged after you have braked the car to standstill and releases the brake pedal. If the car is stopped for a longer period, the power parking brake takes over. And to make it easier and safer to starting uphill or downhill from standstill, the Hill start assist function keeps the brakes applied a short period after you have released the brake pedal until you press the accelerator – there's no risk the car will move while your foot moves from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

    Image2
    Power parking brake

The power parking brake is easily engaged by pulling the control upwards. You can also set the parking brake to engage automatically every time you stop the engine. It is released automatically as soon as you press the accelerator with the transmission in the DRIVE or REVERSE mode – very convenient when moving off from steep gradients. You can also release it manually by pressing the control downwards.

    Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Helping you to maintain your preset gap to vehicles in front at all speeds up to 200 km/h, the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is a supportive partner for a more relaxed driving experience on any journey. Just select the desired speed and the minimum time gap to the vehicle in front. When the radar sensor detects a slower vehicle in front, the speed automatically adapts to that vehicle. And when the road is clear, the car resumes the selected speed. At speeds over 70 km/h ACC also makes overtaking more convenient: simply turning the indicator on, ACC will briefly accelerate your car for a more efficient and fast overtaking. Whenever you want, you can also select conventional cruise control.

    Reinforced passenger compartment

Imagine the peace of mind you and your passengers will have knowing that a strong protective steel cage surrounds you. And that it’s reinforced with a great amount of one of the strongest steel types available – boron steel. The extremely strong passenger cell helps protect the people inside in all types of accidents. In a collision, the front and rear crumple zones help to dissipate the energy of the crash to reduce the impact on those inside the car, while in a side-on impact, our Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS) distributes the crash force across a large portion of the car’s body to further reduce your risk of injury. In the event of a roll-over, the unique roof construction helps protect the occupants – even with the large panoramic roof. And if there's a collision or roll-over, your Volvo unlocks automatically to make it possible to open the doors from the outside after an accident.

    Image2
    Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)

We believe that the car should bear the brunt of any collision, not the people inside it. That’s why we’ve developed our cars so that they offer legendary protection, not just from front and rear impacts, but also from side-on collisions. The steel framework of the car – and that includes the front seat frames – has been designed to help displace the impact of a side-on collision away from the people inside and prevent intrusion into the cabin. And because we understand that an impact with a larger vehicle is a possibility on busy roads, the extremely strong side structure contains ultra-high strength steel to help withstand a severe impact. We have even taken into account the side windows – the Inflatable Curtain (IC) works in conjunction with SIPS and the side airbags to protect people in the front seats. In the rear, SIPS and the IC protect the passengers in the outer rear seats including the third row.

    Image2
    Restraint technologies

In a collision, Volvo’s restraint technologies interact to help reduce the impact. The safety belts with pre-tensioners activate within fractions of a second in the event of a collision or rollover and tighten the belt to help keep the occupants restrained. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled manner. Helping to optimise protection, the dual-stage airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the collision. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. A knee airbag above the pedals further enhances protection of the driver and the brake pedal is released to help prevent foot and leg injuries. Side airbags in the front seats help reduce the risk of serious injuries in a side collision. In a collision or rollover, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear outboard occupants. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection for subsequent impacts.

    Image2
Dual-stage airbags, driver and front passenger

In a frontal collision, the driver and passenger airbags help protect your head, face and chest. But because no two collisions are the same, the airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the impact. To help minimise the impact on the driver, the driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. And if the impact is low enough that the airbags aren’t needed, the system will just deploy safety belt pre-tensioners if necessary.

    Image2
    Passenger airbag cut-off switch

The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off (just use the key), you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.

    Image2
    Side airbags

To help protect the chest and hip during a side-on collision, the side airbags inflate during a side-on impact. They are located in the ideal spot on the front seatback.

    Image2
Safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters

Safety belts are the first line of defence when it comes to help protecting people during a crash. That’s why we introduced them in 1959. We also invented the audible and visual safety belt reminder and today, everybody in the car is reminded to fasten their safety belts before moving off. And in the information display on the instrument panel, you can check that the rear seat passengers have all fastened their safety belts and that nobody unfastens them during the trip. Pre-tensioners activate to tighten the belts within fractions of a second in the event of a collision. The safety belts at the first and second row's outer positions then release a little to give less strain on the upper body. This also gives optimal belt pressure reduction for children at the outer second row seats and at the integrated booster cushion. This also means that the driver and front passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled fashion. If your Volvo senses a critical traffic situation that could result in a run-off scenario or a collision, our run-off road protection system – a Volvo world-first– automatically tightens the front safety belts electrically to help provide maximum protection in the event of an accident.

    Image2

The steering column is an advanced part of the safety system, with the upper and lower sections giving way in a controlled manner in a frontal impact to help protect the driver.

    Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)

It’s something that happens every day in every major city in the world – a moment’s inattention and one driver runs into the back of another. And the result can be long-term injury as a result of whiplash. Volvo, as part of its IntelliSafe programme, has developed a system that can help reduce the risk of long-term injury by as much as 50 per cent. During a rear impact, the WHIPS system moves the entire seatback with the passenger or driver – similar to the way you might gently catch a ball – while the head restraint remains rigid to support the neck. A unique Volvo design.

    Image2
    Inflatable Curtain (IC)

In a frontal offset, a side-on collision or a roll-over accident the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear passengers who are sitting on the sides, including the ones in the third row of the seven-seat version. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection in the event of secondary impacts.

    Image2
Protective front seats with energy absorbing seat cushions

The front seats in your Volvo not only provide relaxing comfort for hours of driving. They are also designed to help protect you in the event of an accident. Part of your Volvo's protective body structure, the seat frames are extremely strong to help protect in a side-impact. Integrated anti-submarining protection helps reduce the risk of sliding under the safety belt in a collision. And to help protect your spine if the car lands hard in the terrain after an accident, the front seat cushions have a completely new design that enables them to absorb severe energy loads.

    Integrated booster cushion

You know when your son or daughter reaches that age when he or she is a little too big for a conventional child seat? Well, we’ve got a solution to smooth the transition from child seat to regular safety belt use, one that will keep your child comfortable and safe – and one that’s always available (for parents, grandparents or whoever suddenly needs to transport a child). Our integrated child booster cushion in the centre second-row seat helps ensure that the safety belt is always positioned to work effectively. That, and the safety belt load limiter, which is adapted to a child with this option, will reduce the strain on a child’s neck and chest during an impact. And when you don’t need it, the booster cushion disappears into the seat cushion. The seat in the seven-seat version can be moved forward so the child can be closer to the adults in the front.

    Alarm

Enjoy peace of mind also after you've parked your Volvo. Automatically turned on when you lock the car, the alarm is connected to the doors, bonnet and tailgate. It also reacts to movement inside the car or the breaking of a window. A level sensor deters thieves from jacking up the car to steal your wheels or tow it away. The deadlock function makes it impossible for a thief to open the doors from the inside once the car is locked from the outside. The movement sensor, level sensor and deadlock function can be switched off so people or pets can be left inside the parked and locked car.

This function allows you to close all windows including the panoramic sunroof and lock the car all at once by pressing the lock button on the remote control for four seconds. Alternatively, press the unlock button for two seconds to unlock the car and open all the windows to get fresh air inside the car before entering.

    Image2
    Immobiliser and theft-protected locks

Not only will the door locks withstand most break-in attempts, the electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right key. And even if a would-be thief manages to get into the car via the window, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open the door from the inside.

    Image2
    Keyless locking and unlocking

When carrying bags or luggage, it can be very convenient that your Volvo unlocks as soon as you approach your car and pull the door handle. No need to press the remote control button – just keep the remote in your pocket or purse. And to lock the car after you've parked, you just push the button in the door handle. In addition to ordinary remote controls, this feature also includes a very small, waterproof keyless mini remote control you can bring with you everywhere.

Electrically powered seats with remote memory

You know how frustrating it is to climb behind the wheel, only to find that a partner or colleague has adjusted the seat and door mirrors to suit their particular physique. That’s why you can electrically adjust the driver’s seat and door mirrors to your perfect position and then your Volvo saves the settings. Every time you use your remote control for the central locking, the seat and door mirrors will automatically adjust to your preferences (you get two remote controls or Personal Car Communicators with your Volvo and can order up to four more). Each remote control triggers the corresponding setting from the last time that particular remote control was used. Furthermore, you can save up to three different seat and door mirror settings by using the buttons on the seat. And an electrically adjustable passenger seat is also optionally available.

    Ventilated front seats

The optional ventilated front seats make long journeys on hot days much more comfortable. The system works by built-in fans drawing air through the perforated leather upholstery in both the cushions and seat backs. The front seat ventilation can be set to three levels.

Every time you use your remote control for the central locking, the seat and door mirrors will automatically adjust to your preferences (you get two remote controls or Personal Car Communicators with your Volvo and can order up to four more). Each remote control triggers the corresponding setting from the last time that particular remote control was used. Furthermore, you can save up to three different seat and door mirror settings by using the buttons on the front door interior panels.

Power folding and raising of the third-row seats

The third-row of seats makes your Volvo XC90 extremely versatile as you can carry up to six passengers and luggage. To further enhance your convenience, you can add power folding and raising of the seats. Without leaving the driver's seat, you can increase the load area by folding the third-row seats using a button on the centre touch screen. And to raise the seats when they're needed, just press the button again and they will regain their upright position. The head restraints are folded forward to give you a good rear vision and can be manually raised when somebody wants to use the seat. The power operated third row of seats can also be folded and raised pressing the button on top the seat backrests.

  • Climate
    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

    Image2
    Four-zone climate system

We designed our four-zone climate system to give you and your passengers the best possible interior air quality and comfort in all seasons, all temperatures and all weathers. The efficient, electronically controlled automatic system maintains the cabin temperature you choose. No matter if you're seated in the front seats or in any of the outer second row seats – you can set the cabin temperature and automatic fan speed individually to suit your preferences. The automatic fan function can be set in five different levels to maximise the climate comfort for each occupant. Separate adjustable air vents in the roof pillars ensure that the occupants in the second and third row of seats can enjoy the same climate comfort as the driver and front passenger. And whether you're seated in the front or second row of seats, the cabin climate settings are easily controlled using intuitive touch screen controls – via the central in-dash touch screen, or via the elegant touch control panel on the back of the tunnel console. An efficient cabin filter helps keep the incoming air free from dust, pollen and other particles – a real benefit if you or your passengers are prone to hay fever or other allergies. And adding our Interior Air Quality System, the climate system continuously monitors the incoming air quality. As soon as it detects harmful substances – such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen dioxides – it temporarily shuts off all incoming air and starts recirculating the air inside the cabin. An active carbon filter effectively filters out harmful substances like vehicle exhaust and diesel exhaust particles. The four-zone climate system also includes air-conditioned cooling of the glove compartment – very convenient to keep drinks or other heat-sensitive stuff cool and fresh during the journey. And to really maximise climate comfort for the third row passengers when it's warm, a separate air condition unit can be added for this area.

    Image2
    Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)

Our Interior Air Quality System is created to give you and your passengers a better and healthier interior environment with clean air and minimised amounts of interior emissions. The system continuously monitors the incoming air quality. It also reduces some chemical odours from the outside, for example from the windscreen washer fluid. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.

    Image2
    Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP)

There’s nothing that gets a trip off to a worse start than getting into stuffy car, particularly on a warm day. To prepare a fresh environment in your new Volvo, our Clean Zone Interior package initiates a ventilation cycle, which is triggered when you unlock the car with your remote control. This feature is active on days when it is at least 10°C outside. The Clean Zone Interior Package also does a great job of venting out allergy and asthma inducing substances, especially gases and smells from new materials in your new car. This automatic function is gradually reduced during the first years of usage to finally be terminated.

    Image2
    Third row air conditioning

When it's warm, your passengers in the third row of seats will appreciate having an air conditioning system of their own. This system complements the four-zone climate system and provides an air temperature that is a mix of the first and second row settings. Separate, adjustable air vents in the roof pillars make it possible for the passengers to regulate the airflow themselves. The separate air conditioning is activated the moment one or both passengers on the third row put on their safety belts. And when the third row seats are folded and you for example have a pet in the load compartment, you can activate the air conditioning from the central touch screen.

    Image2
    Adjustable rear air vents

Even if you ride in the second or third row of seats, you can adjust the airflow to suit your preferences. Adjustable air vents that are conveniently located in the roof pillars at face level create a comfortable environment for rear seat passengers. They also keep ice and mist off the rear side windows, which makes for a safer journey.

    Image2
    Pre ventilation and post climatisation

You can conveniently create a comfortable climate in your Volvo before you have entered it. To pre-ventilate the cabin within 40 minutes, the climate system fan can be started remotely from your smartphone using the Volvo On Call app or from inside the car via the centre touch screen. If your car is fitted with a fuel-driven heater, you can start it the same way to achieve and keep a comfortable cabin temperature. In the plug-in hybrid variant, you can also start the electrically driven air-conditioning to create a cool cabin climate when it's hot on the outside. To maintain the cabin temperature after you have turned off the engine and for example are waiting inside the car, you can keep the climate system and ventilation active for up to 15 minutes – all depending on the engine temperature.

    Image2
    Air-conditioning remote start

Imagine meeting a comfortably climatized cabin every time you get inside your Volvo – even if it's unbearably hot on the outside. With the air-conditioning remote start, you remotely start your car's engine and air conditioning via the Volvo On Call app in your smartphone. This cools down the cabin just in time to allow you and your passengers a comfortable start of your journey. Depending on local environment regulations, the engine running time can be set between 1 and 15 minutes.

    Image2
    Panoramic roof

We designed this exclusive panoramic glass roof to give you and all your passengers a superb experience of air and light inside your Volvo. For ventilation, the front section can be opened at the push of a button, either by sliding it over the rear part, or by tilting it in the rear end. A wind deflector and sealing at the sides effectively eliminate wind buffeting and draft. To help maintain climate comfort on sunny days, there's a power operated sunshade in perforated textile that reduces heat and glare while keeping the airy feel inside the cabin. And to increase your comfort when entering your car in sunny days, the sunshade closes automatically as soon as the outside temperature reaches 25° C when your car is parked and locked. Dark tinted laminated glass further increases your climate comfort and security. It also helps protect from UV radiation. And if you've forgot to close the panoramic roof after you've parked your car, it can be closed from the outside with the remote control.

    Glove compartment

The glove compartment is an example of clean Scandinavian design with form and function as one. The glove compartment lid is an uncluttered surface that you open by pressing a button on the centre console. No keyholes or handles, and you lock it together with the doors. It's roomy on the inside, with convenient pencil and credit card holders. Illumination makes it easy to find the stuff you're locking for. And if your Volvo is equipped with the four-zone climate system, the glove compartment is air conditioned to keep your drinks cool.

    Adaptive Digital Display

What kind of driver are you? The answer can change from day to day. Sometimes you want an active driving experience, at others you just want to cruise. The Adaptive Digital Display instrument option offers three set-ups – Elegance, Eco and Performance. They allow you to change the way you receive information according to your mood and driving style. Elegance with it’s black colour theme is the default mode, showing current and average speed, current and average fuel consumption, distance to empty tank, time and outdoor temperature. It also shows engine temperature and revs, and keeps you informed about your Active Cruise Control status. Another feature, Road Sign Information, displays a small symbol showing the current speed limit and overtaking rules. In a really smart move, your satnav directions pop up in the middle of the display so you don’t have to move your eyes between two screens. The Eco mode has a green colour theme and is all about encouraging and rewarding a fuel-efficient driving style. Of course, you still get the benefit of satnav directions and Road Sign Information. The Performance mode is in a striking red, and gives you a large rev counter with your speed in a digital readout in the centre. On the right, a power meter shows how much engine power is available, which is a useful tool for overtaking. You can also opt for the standard new Analogue Instrument Cluster with a single large dial and two complementary instruments on either side.

    Centre display

When we created the driver's environment in your Volvo, our main focus was to make it as intuitive and natural as possible. We achieved this by virtually eliminating buttons and switches and moving these controls into our new tablet-sized, 9-inch centre display with touch screen. From here, you intuitively control functions such as climate control, entertainment, navigation, the in-car apps and everything in between to make your drive easy and comfortable. The virtual buttons on the screen are dynamic– when you need the buttons, they become bigger and appear on the lower part of the screen to be easy to find and control. You can also rearrange the virtual buttons to suit your personal preferences. The vertical portrait format of the display makes it easy to use and overview. To make it comfortable and safe for you to view the display while driving, all information is presented in the upper part of the screen while the lower part is dedicated for the touch controls. This format is also convenient when you for example are being guided by the navigation system as it can display more of the road ahead. Highly advanced touch screen technology means your finger barely needs to touch the screen to activate or control a function. Some commands you can perform just by sweeping a finger or a hand across the screen –even with gloves on. Contributing to the elegant clean Scandinavian look of the cabin, the full graphical display is glossy at the same time as anti-reflective coating minimises reflections and glare. And just as with the driver display, the looks and colour scheme of the centre display can be adapted to suit your mood and driving style: Comfort, Eco and Sport. In addition, the look of the display also changes depending on the drive mode you choose.

    Image2
    Cruise control

Conveniently operated from the steering wheel, cruise control allows you to drive in a more relaxed way without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. The car maintains the speed you choose until you turn off the cruise control or press the brake or accelerator. After braking, the car returns to its previous cruising speed at the touch of a button. After accelerating – for instance to overtake – your car automatically reverts to its previous cruising speed once you release the accelerator.

    Image2
    Trip computer

Operated via the indicator stalk, the trip computer shows current and average fuel consumption, how far the fuel will take you and average speed – helping you drive more economically.

    Image2

    Image2
    Steering wheel controls

Every little detail in your Volvo is there for a reason – to give you a great experience and facilitate life in your car. For example, the button controls that are neatly integrated in the steering wheel design. From here you can control several functions like cruise control, phone, infotainment, trip computer and the driver information menu in the driver display – all without taking your hands off the wheel. And to make your Volvo response even more intuitively to your commands, you can use voice control that is conveniently activated at the press of a steering wheel button.

    Image2
Park assist sensors, rear and front

Activated when you reverse, rear park assist sensors help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers increases in frequency as the car gets closer to the obstacle, becoming a continuous tone when it’s time to stop. Front park assist sensors perform a similar function at the front of the vehicle – alerting you via the front loudspeakers. The centre console SENSUS screen shows a top view of the car and the activated sensors.

    Park assist sensors, rear

Activated when you reverse or if the car rolls backwards with the gear in neutral, the rear park assist sensors help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers increases in frequency as the car gets closer to the obstacle, becoming a continuous tone when it’s time to stop. The centre display shows a graphical top view of the car and the distance to detected obstacles.

    Image2
    Power door mirrors

You easily adjust the aerodynamic yet generously dimensioned door mirrors from your position in the driver's seat. To protect your door mirrors from damage while the car for example is parked or driving through a car wash, press both buttons for the left and right mirror at the same time to fold them flat against the car. They can also be set to fold or unfold automatically every time you lock or unlock the car. And to facilitate parking, the door mirrors can tilt automatically (or by the push of a button) to show you the kerb when reversing. Contributing to your safety when it's cold, the door mirrors are electrically heated together with the rear window and therefore kept free from frost. And to make sure that a following car’s headlights don’t dazzle you when driving in the dark, you can add an auto-dimming function that reduces intrusive light reflection via the door mirrors.

    Image2
    Park Assist Pilot

Take away the fuss of parking and let your car park itself – no matter if you're about to parallel park along the street or manoeuvre into a perpendicular parking space. At the press of a button, Park Assist Pilot scans the parking slot using ultrasonic sensor technology. The system alerts you if the slot is spacious enough (minimum 1.2 x the length of the car at parallel parking). Then just follow the instructions in the driver information display. You control the speed and direction of your car, while Park Assist Pilot takes over the steering until you're perfectly parked. It can also assist you when steering out of a tight parallel parking space. Park Assist Pilot also includes front and rear park assist sensors that help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The centre display shows a graphical top view of the car and the distance to detected obstacles.

    Image2
    Rain sensor

Once activated, the rain sensor can start the windscreen wipers as soon as it begins to rain or if water splashes onto the windscreen. For your convenience, it can also automatically adapt the intermittent windscreen-wiper function. Its sensitivity can be adjusted via a ring on the wiper stalk.

    Image2
Daytime Running Lights with daylight sensor

With the light switch in the Auto position, the fuel-saving Daytime Running Lights are automatically activated. If the daylight becomes to dim, or if you enter a tunnel for example, a sensor will detect the changed light conditions and activate your car's headlights. They will also be activated if you turn on the windscreen wipers or the rear fog light. The system will turn the headlights automatically as well. In the LED headlights, the Daytime Running Lights have a unique hammer-shaped look that enhances the powerful design of your Volvo.

    Image2
    Head-up display

Driving your Volvo, you never have to take look away from the road. The head-up display presents the most vital driver information as it's hovering two metres in front of the windscreen. You can keep your eyes on the traffic at the same time as you, for example, share information from the navigation system. You don't have to change focus or look down, which also gives less strain on the eyes. The brightness of the head-up display adapts automatically to the light conditions, and you can set the system to suit your own personal preferences.

    Image2
    Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror

The frameless inner rear-view mirror is a true piece of Scandinavian design. And ending the need to take your hand off the steering wheel and stop headlight beams shining in your eyes, the anti-dazzle function is stepless and returns to normal when it's no longer needed.

    Image2
    12.3-inch driver display

Already from the moment you take your position behind the wheel of your Volvo, you'll feel you're in control. In the full graphical digital driver display in front of you, all relevant driver information – including navigation directions, telephone and actual road signs – is intuitively displayed. Our top-of-the-line 12.3-inch display features two large round instruments and one central information display. Depending on how you use it, the size of the information display adapts to give you the best visual experience. For example, if you use the navigation system, that display becomes bigger and the two instruments smaller. Further contributing to your driving experience, you can choose between different looks and colour schemes to adapt the display to the mood you're in. There's a choice of three display modes: Comfort, Eco and Sport. In addition, the look of the display also changes depending on the drive mode you choose. And the mode you select, also applies for the 9-inch central display. To ensure that all information is presented as clearly and comfortably for your eyes as possible, the brightness of the display adapts automatically according to the exterior light conditions. Like, for example, when the sun shines through the windows or there are lights from vehicles behind when it's dark. It also adapts when you're driving through a tunnel and at night. The driver display can also be seen by the front seat passenger. When the ignition is off, the display has a glossy black, hi-tech look to enhance the exclusive impression every time you enter your Volvo.

    Image2
    Interior lighting

Good lighting is the key to creating the right atmosphere. This is as true in your car as it is in your home. When you unlock your Volvo, the interior light together with foot well lights and mood lights are illuminated. And when a front door is opened, light under the door illuminates the ground by courtesy to help you avoid stepping into, for example, a puddle of water. In addition, illuminated tread plates and a light guide along the dashboard and the four doors create a welcoming feel inside your Volvo. The discrete mood lights further contributes to a warm and cosy atmosphere when travelling. Front reading lamps are integrated in the roof console. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed in the roof and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver. The interior light will fade out gradually after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked.

    Image2
Power retractable door mirrors with ground lighting

To protect your door mirrors from damage while the car for example is parked or driving through a car wash, press both buttons for the left and right mirror at the same time to fold them flat against the car. They can also be set to fold or unfold automatically every time you lock or unlock the car. And to facilitate parking, the door mirrors can tilt automatically (or by the push of a button) when reversing.

    Image2
    Power windows, front and rear

The power windows have controls conveniently located in the door armrests. The front windows can be lowered or raised with a quick press or pull of a button, and you can lock the back windows from the driver’s seat if you’re travelling with small children. In this case, you’ll also be glad of the automatic anti-clamp protection, which will stop a window from closing on a trapped little hand.

    Speed-dependent power steering

You can enjoy pliant and comfortable steering at all speeds. The speed-dependent and progressive power steering uses sophisticated, speed-sensitive technology to regulate the amount of power assistance you need while driving. At highway speeds, the steering is firm and positive. When parking or in slow traffic, the steering is light and effortless.

    Image2

    Image2
    Headlamp level adjuster

The headlamp level adjuster allows the driver to lower or raise the angle of the headlight beam by turning a dial on the instrument panel. This is particularly useful when driving at night with a full load. Only applies to halogen headlamps; LED headlights adjust automatically.

    Sensus Connect with High Performance

When we created the audio systems to the Volvo XC90, our focus was simply to deliver the most impressive sound in the category. Already from ground up, the vehicle architecture is designed with audio performance in mind – for example when it comes to how we fit and integrate the speakers into the car. For a really crisp and natural sound, the six-channel amplifier of the High Performance audio system delivers a total of 330 watts to ten speakers. The tweeters, woofers and mid-range speakers are separated and interact to give you and all your passengers a top quality sound experience – even if they travel in the third row of the seven-seat version. The overall sound quality and bass performance is quite simply superb, and if you want an even richer and deeper bass sound there's the option of Volvo's extremely powerful sub-woofer.
This audio system is part of our Sensus Connect which also includes the 9-inch centre display with touchscreen and steering wheel controls with a scroll wheel. And if you want to watch your favourite TV shows while at standstill, you can add Digital TV for terrestrial channels.

    Sub-woofer

Want to enjoy the depth of genuine, uncluttered bass? We designed this sub-woofer to meet the audiophile's most exacting demands on bass reproduction. Using fresh-air technology that allows the sub-woofer's 250 mm carbon fibre cone to pulse enormous amounts of air through an opening in the rear wheel-arch, it can deliver extremely low and undistorted bass tones (down to 20 Hz). And to save space, the sub-woofer is thin and integrated in the vehicle architecture to not encroach passenger or load space. This sub-woofer is included in the Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins. A lower specified version is available as option for the High Performance audio system.

    Second seat row

Designed for maximum comfort during hours of travelling, the three individual seats on the second row provide generous body support and can be individually reclined in seven steps to suit personal preferences. In the seven-seat version, each seat on the second row also slides individually to further enhance legroom in the third row of seats. This also makes it easier to adapt the load compartment, for example when you need to haul bulky loads together with passengers. If needed, each seat also folds individually into the load compartment floor for maximum versatility. The middle seat can be equipped with an integrated booster cushion and can slide forward additionally for even better elbow space or to put the child in even closer contact with parents in the front seats.

  • Chassis & Steering
    Chassis

The chassis of your Volvo has been tuned to deliver a refined, smooth ride as well as sharp handling. All to give you a car that is just as comfortable and fun to drive on challenging country roads as it is on the highway. The advanced aluminium double wishbone suspensions at the front wheels provide perfectly balanced road holding and steering characteristics. At the rear, an exclusive Integral axle allows all characteristics to be individually tuned for your comfort and enjoyment. Extensive use of aluminium and a transverse lightweight leaf spring in composite material at the rear (unless the car is equipped with air-suspension) reduce the unsprung weight, which is essential for road holding and comfort. Reducing the total weight of the car, this also contributes to low fuel consumption. Very generous ground clearance and short overhangs contribute to an excellent performance on rough roads with a great ability to go off-road, too.

    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

    Image2
    Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)

Our Interior Air Quality System is created to give you and your passengers a better and healthier interior environment with clean air and minimised amounts of interior emissions. The system continuously monitors the incoming air quality.

  • Protective safety

  • Seats
    Contour front seats

Our new generation slim Contour leather sport seats not only look fantastic. Designed to inspire dynamic driving, they also give you great side support all the way from your thighs to your shoulders. In typical Volvo fashion you’ll arrive feeling fresh, even after long stints behind the steering wheel. The power adjustable cushion extensions give excellent thigh support, even if you have long legs. And providing almost endless adjustment possibilities, the six-way power adjustment also includes power multi-directional lumbar support. In other words: you can easily tailor the front seats of your Volvo to fit your body perfectly – the ergonomic controls are conveniently fitted at the sides of the seats. Meanwhile, the specially-designed seat backsides contribute to increased legroom for the rear passengers.

    Image2
    Seven individual seats

In our new XC90, everyone travels first class. All occupants will appreciate the comfort of an individual, ergonomically designed seat. Cinema-style seating helps provide an excellent view, wherever you're seated. The easily adjustable front and second row seats make it easy to find the perfect seating position and maximum comfort. Each seat on the second row slides and reclines individually to suit personal preferences and further enhance legroom in the third row of seats. The middle seat can also be equipped with an integrated booster cushion and can slide forward additionally for even better elbow space or to put the child in even closer contact with parents in the front seats. In the third row of seats two passengers of up to 170 cm rides comfortably with good foot space, legroom and headroom. The two seats are centred close to each other to give the occupants a good front view for a more enjoyable ride. This area can also be fitted with its own air conditioning system, including adjustable ventilation vents. To facilitate getting in and out of the third row, the outer seats of the second row can be conveniently folded and pushed forward using a handle on top of the backrest. Further enhancing the versatility of your XC90, each rear seat is easy to fold individually into the load area floor so you can transport both passengers and cargo without compromising on either comfort or safety.

    Image2
    Power front seat

Adjust your seat to its perfect position - then programme up to 3 different driver's settings into a memory system linked to the central locking remote controls. Your car will then automatically adjust the driver's seat to the corresponding setting from the last time a particular remote control was used. Available for both the driver and passenger seat.

  • Storage
    Glove compartment

The glove compartment is an example of clean Scandinavian design with form and function as one. The glove compartment lid is an uncluttered surface that you open by pressing a button on the centre console. No keyholes or handles, and you lock it together with the doors. It's roomy on the inside, with convenient pencil and credit card holders. Illumination makes it easy to find the stuff you're locking for. And if your Volvo is equipped with the four-zone climate system, the glove compartment is air conditioned to keep your drinks cool.

    Front centre armrest and storage

Positioned between the ultra-slim front seats, the stylish front centre armrest emphasize the exclusive Scandinavian interior design with clean lines, genuine materials and superior craftsmanship. You have access to smart storage, two cupholders and a 12 V power outlet under a roll-top cover in the same material as the interior deco panels. The pull/push handle is divided to also provide a small, separate storage in front. The armrest provides generous support for both the driver and front seat passenger, and folded up it displays a generous storage compartment underneath with AUX and USB inputs to connect your external devices – such as your mobile phone – to the audio system.

    Image2

    Image2

It also reduces some chemical odours from the outside, for example from the windscreen washer fluid. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.
