Safety

We've always approached safety through research and used data to inform our decisions. Since the 1970s, we have analysed over 43,000 cars from real-life collisions involving over 72,000 occupants.

Sharing our research with the world

We believe everyone has a right to be safe. Since 2019, through the E.V.A initiative, we've shared over 40 years of safety research. It's open for anyone to download.

E.V.A. Initiative – Equal Vehicles for All

This initiative is to ensure everyone is represented – not just men, but women and children – when designing for safety.

“By collecting real-world data for a long time, it has been possible to identify what injuries arise in different crashes for men, women, and children”

The result of more than 40 years of research

In 1970, the Volvo Traffic Accident Research Team was formed to create this extensive knowledge bank of research findings. This formed the backbone for many of the safety innovations we find in cars today.

Innovative features that make a difference

Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)

A Volvo innovation, SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), relies on an intelligent structure to boost overall safety. Together with the side impact airbag, studies show that SIPS may reduce severe chest injuries by more than 50 per cent for all passengers.

In addition to SIPS, the inflatable curtain airbag can reduce risk of head injuries by approximately 75 per cent in the event of a side impact collision. Inflating in 0.04 seconds, it was the first airbag system to offer improved protection for both front and rear seat occupants.

The most effective lifesaver in traffic

Since we introduced the safety belt more than 60 years ago, it has saved over one million lives. In all types of crashes, it offers great protection for occupants regardless of size, gender or body shape.

Volvo Cars’ safety features complement safe driving practices and are not intended to enable or encourage distracted, aggressive, or otherwise
unsafe or illegal driving. Ultimately, the driver is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle at all times. Described features may be optional and
