The art of comfort
With the release of the all-new XC90, Volvo Cars introduced a thrilling, thoroughly modern take on the concept of Scandinavian luxury. Here was a car where innovative design features effortlessly integrated with natural materials to create a luxurious interior, which was as comfortable as it was eye-catching. Now, with the release of the new Volvo S90, Volvo V90 and Volvo XC90 Excellence, our designers have kept their focus on luxury and wellbeing and used it to turn the concept of in-car comfort into an art form.
The right frame of mind
Being in a relaxed and positive frame of mind while we’re in our cars can make a huge difference
to our everyday driving. Not only can it help increase our enjoyment of the ride, it can also improve our wellbeing – not to mention our safety and the safety of those around us. So, when we design our cars, we do everything we can to help you feel content, comfortable and in control. But how do we do this? Well, let’s start with our seats.
For years, our seats have been considered among the best in the automotive world. But when it came to the seating in the new generation of Volvo cars, we decided that instead of developing our existing seats, we would create something entirely new. The result was a range of state-of-the-art seats that perfectly complemented the premium interiors in our new cars, while providing unbeatable levels of comfort and support.
The first thing you’ll notice about our new front seats is the modern and stylish Scandinavian design – especially the slim backrests, which give rear-seat passengers extra legroom. But it’s when you sit in them that you really feel the difference.
Our designers have kept their focus on luxury and wellbeing and used it to turn the concept of in-car comfort into an art form.
Anyone for a massage?
We spend a lot more time in our cars than ever before, so the key to a satisfying, modern motoring experience is comfort. Our new front seats feature a completely new frame and firm backrests, which are covered with a soft coating and uniquely shaped to resemble the human spine. The front seats also feature extra, multi-directional lumbar support, which can be adjusted to meet a wide range of personal preferences, and luxuriously soft new upholstery. All comfort settings, including lumbar support, are power operated and all controls are conveniently within reach. So even adjusting your comfort settings is a comfortable experience.
As well as using the finest materials and smartest, ergonomic design solutions, we have also incorporated the latest technology into our new front seats to offer a completely new level of in-car comfort. As an option, the front seats are available with a massage function in the backrest, and ventilation and heating functions in the seat cushions. The massage function has five programmes, three adjustable speeds and three adjustable intensities to help you relax on longer trips. The different programmes, speeds and intensities make it possible to tailor the type of massage to suit your mood. In the XC90 Excellence, however, it’s not only front-seat passengers who can enjoy a relaxing in-car massage, the rear passenger seats are also fitted with the massage function. The ventilation function, combined with optional perforated, fine Nappa leather seats, helps adjust your body temperature to the in-car climate and offers higher comfort than regular seats. The ventilation can also be used together with the heating function to dry damp clothing.
Personalise your entrance
Stepping into your car and finding everything just the way you like it is enough to put any driver
in a good mood. So we designed a memory function that stores all your personal comfort settings, including seats and mirrors. If someone else uses your car, all it takes to get things back just the way you like them is the press of a button. We have even designed a way to make getting in and out of the car easier. When you pull the interior door handle to exit the car, the easy ingress/egress function moves the seat backwards and adjusts it to its lowest position to make getting out of the car simple and convenient. The seat remains in this position until you get back in and start the engine.
When the engine starts, the seat returns to your personal pre-set driving position.
The air that we breathe
But it’s not just the way we sit that can help us improve our comfort and wellbeing, the air that we breathe in our cars also makes a huge difference to our health. Unfortunately, as the number of cars on our roads increases, so does the amount of pollution in the air. To help counter this rise in pollution and create the perfect in-car climate, we test our climate systems in both the warmest and coldest climates on Earth. Maintaining the right temperature and air circulation is essential for the wellbeing of everyone in the car, not to mention an important safety factor as it helps drivers stay fresh and alert.
According to independent testing, the Interior Air Quality System found in the latest Volvo models starting with the all-new XC90, is the most efficient on the market. It has a sensor that measures the quality of the air coming into the car. If it detects harmful substances it shuts off all incoming air by activating the recirculation system. This means that in heavily polluted areas, the air inside the car is often cleaner than the air outside. All air that enters the car passes through a unique multi-filter, which reduces the level of dust, pollen and other particles. It also filters out harmful substances in the air, such as exhaust fumes and reduces chemical odours, e.g. windscreen washer fluid. And to make sure that everyone in the car gets the chance to enjoy the perfect in-car climate, a four-zone climate control system is available. Four-zone climate control allows passengers sitting in different positions in the car to adjust the climate settings to suit their personal preferences.
A little extra wellbeing
Other ways the latest Volvo cars can help you stay more relaxed on the road.
By taking everything we have learned from the latest research into ergonomics and combining it with state-of-the-art comfort and design technology, we have created a new generation of Volvo Cars interiors that offer drivers – and their passengers – more than ever before. Now, as well as enjoying the unique levels of safety and performance offered by a Volvo, you can surround yourself with a wide range of innovative features and functions that can increase your comfort, improve your wellbeing and generally make you feel happier and healthier behind the wheel.
Luxury for little travellers
The new generation of Volvo Cars child seats was born in conjunction with the release of the all-new Volvo XC90. When it came to choosing the seats that make up the new range, it was decided that as well as providing the usual, reassuringly high levels of safety Volvo Cars is known for, additional focus would be placed on providing children with extra comfort. The new child seats would also feature a luxurious new look that would feel like a natural part of the car’s interior.
In search of a happy place
Buying a car won’t make you happy. This may seem like an odd statement for a car manufacturer to make. But it’s true. What a car gives you, however, is the opportunity to discover new places, meet new people and experience life on your terms. It’s these experiences and the memories and friends you make along the way that will bring you happiness. Our cars are simply a way of helping you find it. We took ourselves, and our trusty XC90, to Iceland, where we set off in search of happiness.
Skiing in Åre
Skiing seems to come naturally to the Swedes. Perhaps it’s growing up in a country where months of uninterrupted ice and snow are the norm, and falling temperatures and tricky terrain are seen as springboards to adventure rather than stumbling blocks? Whatever it is, the moment you witness a six-year-old whizzing by you at speeds you could only dream of, you soon realise the Swedes were built for the slopes.
