Hold and Charge

Using the Hold and Charge functions you have the option to control hybrid battery charging while driving. Hold and Charge have replaced the Save drive mode that was previously in cars with hybrid engines.

The internal combustion engine may start automatically and/or does not switch off

During electrical operation, the car may sometimes need to start the internal combustion engine automatically due to external circumstances, which is completely normal. In low outside temperatures, for example, this may take place in order to achieve the desired passenger compartment temperature. In addition, the engine starts when the hybrid battery reaches its lowest state of charge.

If the tank valve is closed on the Twin Engine during refuelling

When refuelling your Twin Engine, it may be handy to know that the valve in the fuel filler flap closes a short while after you have pressed the button to open the fuel filler flap. If the valve closes before you are ready to refuel, you will need to press the button to open the fuel filler flap and reopen the valve.

Charging cable locks automatically

While you are packing your car, or if you have forgotten to lock the car, you may find that the charging cable has locked into the car's charging input socket automatically. This is to ensure that e.g. charging or preconditioning can be started and to increase the range for electric operation.

Range in electric mode for Twin Engine

By using the car's electric motor you can reduce fuel consumption and at the same time help save the environment. You can affect how far you can drive by frequently charging the car, using preconditioning and planning your journey.

Electric mode

Depending on, amongst other things, driving style, temperature and climate, normal range for electric mode is at 25-45 km (15-27 miles) for a S60 T6/T8, V60 T6/T8 and S90/V90, 20-40 km (12-24 miles) for an XC60/XC90 and 25-50 km (15-30 miles) for a V60 D6/D5.

Electric mode is most effective for urban driving at speeds of 30-60 km/h (18-37 mph) with a few short stops and at temperatures between 15-20 °C. If you use drive mode Pure it is possible under these conditions to achieve a range of up to 45 km (27 miles) for a S60 T6/T8, V60 T6/T8 and S90/V90, up to 40 km (24 miles) for an XC60/XC90 and up to 50 km (30 miles) for a V60 D6/D5.

The electric range given in the owner's manual or in your registration document is the certified one and is based on driving cycles and regulations that apply to the relevant market. This range is used when different cars are compared against each other and is not a range that can be expected during typical driving.

You can affect the range yourself

The following tips and information can help you extend the range in electric mode:

  • Charge the car as often as possible from the mains supply.
  • When driving at speeds below 60 km/h (37 mph) in electric mode, the range may increase compared to driving at higher speeds.
  • Driving longer distances in electric mode all at one time often results in a longer range, rather than dividing the electric mileage from one charge into several short subsections. This is because the transmission, passenger compartment, tyres, etc. heat up several times when driving is divided into several subsections, which consumes additional energy.
  • Precondition the car if possible before driving using the charging cable connected to the electric network.
  • Colder and hotter climates can give shorter distances with pure electric operation.

Reading of eDTE

Since it is difficult to predict driving styles and other factors that affect the range in electric mode, Volvo has chosen to use a starting value eDTE (Electric Distance To Empty) when the car is fully charged. The start value specifies an up to-figure instead of a forecast range of electric mode range.

  • A fully charged S60 T6/T8 that starts in Hybrid mode shows an eDTE start value of up to 40 km (24 miles). If Pure-mode is instead selected, the eDTE increases by 5 km (3 miles). The start value when the car is fully charged is then up to 45 km (27 miles).
  • A fully charged V60 T6/T8 that starts in Hybrid mode shows an eDTE start value of up to 40 km (24 miles). If Pure-mode is instead selected, the eDTE increases by 5 km (3 miles). The start value when the car is fully charged is then up to 45 km (27 miles).
  • A fully charged XC90/XC60 that starts in Hybrid mode shows an eDTE start value of up to 35 km (21 miles). If Pure-mode is instead selected, the eDTE increases by 5 km (3 miles). The start value when the car is fully charged is then up to 40 km (24 miles).
  • A fully charged V90/S90 that starts in Hybrid mode shows an eDTE start value of up to 40 km (24 miles). If Pure-mode is instead selected, the eDTE increases by 5 km (3 miles). The start value when the car is fully charged is then up to 45 km (27 miles).
  • A fully charged V60 D6/D5 that starts in Hybrid mode shows an eDTE start value of up to 45 km (27 miles). If Pure-mode is instead selected, the eDTE increases by 5 km (3 miles). The start value when the car is fully charged is then up to 50 km (30 miles).

The difference in the start values is because the car is allowed to use more energy from the hybrid battery in Pure mode, and because the car switches to ECO Climate.
