  • Preventive safety
    City Safety

We know that you want to a avoid collisions under all circumstances, also at low speeds. And it only takes a moment’s distraction in a busy city centre to find yourself in just such a scenario. So we wondered whether it would be possible for your Volvo to lend a helping hand. Well, that’s exactly what City Safety is all about, a laser-based technology that can sense an impending collision at speeds of up to 50km/h. In the first instance, City Safety prepares the brakes so that they respond faster when you press the pedal. And if you fail to brake, City Safety will apply the brakes for you and switch off the throttle to lessen the effects of a collision. Even better, if the difference in speed between your car and the one in front is less than 15km/h, City Safety can prevent a collision from happening in the first place. City Safety is activated as soon as you start your car, and ready to assist you in such an eventuality. City Safety is just one element of our complete approach to car safety. We call it IntelliSafe, and it’s a programme targeted at fulfilling our aim to create cars that will help you avoid collisions altogether – it includes such features as Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and much more.

    Image2
    Driver Support Package

Wouldn’t it be great if your car could help you avoid collisions, spot wayward pedestrians, read road signs and warn you if, for example, you’re exceeding the speed limit? Imagine if your car could even sense you getting tired or distracted as you drive, and then give you a gentle warning. It’s not science fiction, it’s our Driver Support Package and it will help keep you safer and give you a more rewarding driving experience. As well as the features mentioned, the Package includes Adaptive Cruise Control (at all speeds), Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Driver Alert Control (DAC), Lane Keeping Aid (LKA), Active High Beam (AHB), Road Sign Information (RSI), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Cross Traffic Alert (CTA).

    Image2
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Queue Assist

Helping you to maintain your preset gap to vehicles in front at all speeds up to 200 km/h on automatics and between 30 and 200 km/h on manual cars, the ACC is a supportive partner for a more relaxed driving experience on any journey. In slow moving city traffic, the ACC stop and go function* with ECO mode automatically adapts your speed to the vehicle in front while helping you save fuel by maintaining smoother progress with less need for surges of acceleration. From standstill, a press of a button or the accelerator is all it takes to make your car smoothly tail the vehicle in front. At over 30 km/h, just select the desired speed and the minimum time gap to the vehicle in front. When the radar sensor detects a slower vehicle in front, the speed automatically adapts to that vehicle. And when the road is clear, the car resumes the selected speed. If ACC is disengaged and a vehicle in front comes too close, the distance alert function activates a warning light in the lower section of the windscreen to help you keep a proper distance. Whenever you want, you can also select conventional cruise control by pressing the ACC button for a few seconds.

*The Queue Assist and stop and go function from 0 to 30 km/h requires an Automatic gearbox!

    Image2
Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection

Statistics show that in half of all rear-end collisions the driver at fault doesn’t brake at all. Active at speeds above 4 km/h, our collision avoidance technology can give you audible and visible warnings if you’re too close to a vehicle in front or if there are pedestrians or cyclists in your path. If you don’t react and a collision is imminent, full auto-braking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. Within a range of 150 metres, a radar sensor behind the grille continuously monitors the distance to the vehicle driving in front of you and a digital camera behind the windscreen determines what objects are in front of you. During daylight it can also detect standing or moving pedestrians or cyclists. If a pedestrian or a cyclist unexpectedly swerves out in front of your car or if a vehicle suddenly brakes (or is stationary) and Collision Warning senses that a collision is likely to happen, it will prompt you to act with a flashing warning light on the windscreen along with an audible alarm. Moreover, this technology supports driver-initiated braking by pre-charging the brakes to reduce the braking distance. If you don’t react to the warning and a collision is imminent, the car immediately brakes with full braking force.

    Image2
    Driver Alert Control (DAC)

You know the scenario. Maybe you’ve had a long day at the office or possibly too many hours behind the wheel, and your attention begins to waver. This is a danger zone that we’ve given a lot of thought to, because distracted drivers cause up to 90 per cent of all accidents. That’s why we’ve developed Driver Alert Control (DAC) to help distracted drivers at speeds over 65km/h. A camera looks at the road ahead while DAC checks on your steering inputs to see how they compare to your regular driving style. If it senses that you’re driving more erratically, or there are signs that you’re drowsy or distracted, it’ll give you an audible warning and a message on the instrument panel suggesting you take a break.

    Image2
    Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

It can happen so easily; you’re on a long motorway trip, or momentarily distracted and you wander briefly out of your lane. This puts you in danger of collision, or of simply going off the road on your own. It doesn’t bear thinking about, but your Volvo can help with the Lane Departure Warning system. When you’re driving over 65km/h, a camera looks at the lane markings and can tell if you wander out of your lane. If you do, it will give you an audible warning but if you use indicators to signal a lane change, LDW will stay silent.

    Image2
    Road Sign Information (RSI)

With RSI you don't have to miss important road signs. A forward camera detects speed limit and "no overtaking" signs. The actual sign is then displayed on the centre dial on the instrument cluster – to help keep you constantly alert on current restrictions. If you want, RSI can also alert you with a visual warning if you exceed the speed limit, by flashing gently three times. This is easily set in the centre console menu.

    Image2
Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Cross Traffic Alert (CTA)

We’ve all experienced that nasty little shock as we’re changing lanes and suddenly realise that there’s another vehicle in our blind spot. That’s why we have developed Radar BLIS to give you total awareness. Evolved from our previous BLIS system with cameras in the rear-view mirrors, Radar BLIS has radar sensors installed inside the rear of the car, which cover a much larger area behind the car and work in various sorts of weather and light conditions, day or night. As a vehicle enters your blind spot, this function can alert you via a warning light built into the front door post – left and right. Together with the door mirrors, which include a wide-angle mirror on the driver side, this helps you assess the feasibility of a lane change. Radar BLIS is activated once the car exceeds 10 km/h and reacts to almost any type of vehicle, including motorcycles. Cross Traffic Alert uses the rear radar sensors to alert you of crossing traffic from the sides when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view might be limited.

    Image2
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) with Advanced Stability Control (ASC), Corner Traction Control (CTC), Engine Drag Control (EDC) and Sport Mode

It can catch you out when you least expect it. And it really is a heart-stopping moment when, on a rain-slicked or ice-covered road, the tail of your car steps out as it threatens to go into a skid. Steer into that skid and you can end up fishtailing, and ultimately, going into a spin. This is precisely the kind of scenario that has made Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) one of the most vital safety advances of the past decade. The system looks at factors like what direction the car is travelling, how fast the wheels are rotating and how much steering lock is applied. Using all this information, DSTC can detect a potential skid and take action to prevent it by reducing engine power and/or braking the appropriate wheels. It can also prevent the wheels from locking during engine braking, using Engine Drag Control (EDC). To help the DSTC system work even sooner and with more precision to prevent a skid, the Advanced Stability Control (ASC) system has a new multi-axis sensor. But ASC is about giving you a rewarding driving experience, too, so when you’re cornering enthusiastically the car will feel even more dynamically stable. Another feature that means you’ll experience sharper turn-in to corners, less understeer and more fun behind the wheel is Corner Traction Control (CTC). It works by braking the inside driven wheel if it starts to lose its grip through a corner, while sending the power to the outer wheel instead. And if you’re in the mood for a bit of performance driving, DTSC has a Sport Mode. It cuts out the engine power reducing function and allows a controlled amount of rear wheel slip, as long as it senses that the driver is using the steering wheel and accelerator in a dynamic way and as long as it doesn’t go too far, in which case it will return to the normal DSTC-function.

    Image2
    Roll Stability Control (RSC)

In the event of an emergency manoeuvre, Volvo’s Roll Stability Control (RSC) can step in to help prevent the vehicle from rolling over. It features a gyroscopic sensor that registers the vehicle’s lean angle and rollover risk. If required, RSC will cut engine power or brake one or more of the wheels just enough to reduce the centrifugal force and help regain balance.

    Image2
Anti-locking brakes with Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) and Ready Alert Brakes (RAB)

When you’ve been caught by surprise by another car pulling out of a junction unexpectedly, that’s when large anti-lock disc brakes really come into their own – shorter stopping distances at times like this make all the difference. And if you find yourself travelling down a mountain road with the need to brake often and hard, you’ll welcome our brakes’ resistance to fading. But since there is always a risk of fade, your Volvo is prepared for this, too, with Fading Brake Support (FBS). This system gradually builds hydraulic brake pressure so that you always have reassuring pedal feel. But what if you find yourself having to brake in an emergency, and perhaps not applying the necessary pressure to the pedal? Well, we’ve developed Hydraulic Brake Assist, which ensures that maximum braking pressure is applied hydraulically during a panic stop. Likewise, if you suddenly lift off the accelerator or sensors detect an obstacle in front of the car, Ready Alert Brakes instantly move the brake pads closer to the brake discs to reduce the braking distance. And Electronic Brake Distribution ensures that the right amount of braking goes to the front and rear of the your Volvo depending on where the load in the car is distributed and what the road conditions are.

    Image2
    Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Imagine that you’re in the passing lane on a high-speed motorway. Your car starts to weave; at first you’re baffled and then it dawns on you. One of your rear tyres is dangerously low on pressure – with any luck, you’ll make it safely to the hard shoulder. It’s a terrifying scenario, and one of the reasons why we developed our tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which uses sensors mounted in each tyre valve. If you’re travelling at 30km/h or more and any one of your tyres is underinflated you’ll get plenty of warning.

    Image2
Active Bending Lights (ABL) with Dual Xenon Technology

You know when you’re driving down a winding country road at night and the headlights don’t quite show you everything coming up around the next bend? We wondered, what if your headlights could swivel like eyes, so your car could help you see around corners? So we developed Active Bending Lights – with motorised lamps that can turn up to 15 degrees in either direction – that follow the way you steer. And by using extra bright Dual Xenon lights (low beam and high beam), you get a 90 per cent boost to your vision round bends at night. This means you can gain a further 45 metres for braking. You can also experience highly effective low-beam illumination on narrow, winding roads and extremely powerful high beams on the motorway – a sensor disengages the adaptive function during daylight to reduce wear. It’s a very clever system, too – depending on the load in the car, the headlights self-adjust to maintain the correct angle to the road, even during hard acceleration or braking.

    Image2
    Cornering Light

At speeds of up to 30 km/h, the optional Cornering Light illuminates the area in which you’re turning at up to 15 degrees around the car for safer manoeuvring – for instance if you’re turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night.

    Image2
    Active High Beam (AHB)

Journeys after dark have just become a lot more enjoyable – and safer – thanks to our new Active High Beam, available as an option. With this system, you don’t need to keep flicking between low and high beam*, which is not only annoying – according to several studies, it’s also a major cause of night-time accidents. With our new system, your headlights stay on high beam all the time. When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system prevents dazzling the other driver by shading out only as much of your beam as necessary – no more, no less. The same applies to cars in front of you. The system can even recognise pedestrians and cyclists and avoids dazzling them, too – it can keep track of ten separate objects at the same time. And because the system is intelligent, the high beam shuts off when you enter a city, but if you drive past an illuminated sign – say a filling station or supermarket – it stays on so you can see what’s coming up. This means you benefit from safety as well as convenience.

*Applies for ABL with Dual Xenon Technology. Cars with halogen lights shift automatically between high and low beam.

    Image2
Inner and outer rear view mirrors with Auto Dim

One of the most annoying things about night driving is the blinding glare from other cars’ headlights. Our generously dimensioned door mirrors are made of chromatic glass that automatically dims to diminish glare from traffic behind you. The mirrors use an internal sensor to monitor light conditions and recognise glare from headlights. When this is detected, the inner and outer rear view mirrors will darken simultaneously to the exact degree necessary. Once the source of the glare disappears, the glass returns to its normal state automatically. Other functions include an optional built-in compass in the inner rear view mirror and ground lighting as well as indicators embedded in the sides of the outer mirrors.

    Image2
    Side-marker lamps

Integrated front and rear side-marker lamps help alert other drivers to your car’s presence.

    Image2
    Emergency Brake light (EBL)

We’ve all been on the motorway when the car in front unexpectedly brakes hard and then you have to brake even harder, while praying that the car behind you reacts in time. Wouldn’t you like to have some way of making sure traffic behind knows there’s a problem? Well, that’s our Emergency Brake Light, which works above 50km/h and knows the difference between normal and panic braking. If it is a panic stop, the brake lights will flash at a rate of four times per second, which will telegraph a clear message to following traffic that there’s a potential problem ahead. Once you slow to below 10km/h, the brake lights stop pulsing and your hazard lights take over.

    Image2
    Water-repellent front side windows

To provide far better visibility in the rain, your Volvo’s front side windows help repel water as you drive. The hydrophobic surface treatment turns water into small drops that will be blown away by the force of the wind. This also gives you the benefit of less ice or frost in winter conditions. This option is offered in combination with laminated windows.

    Image2
    Warning triangle

This lightweight wide-angle reflector stands upright to alert other road users even in strong winds and on slippery surfaces. It folds easily and stores in its own case.

    Image2
  • Protective safety
    Reinforced passenger compartment

Imagine the peace of mind you and your passengers will have knowing that a strong protective steel cage surrounds you. And that it’s reinforced with one of the strongest steel types available – boron steel. In a collision, the front and rear crumple zones help to dissipate the energy of the crash to reduce the impact on those inside the car, while in a side-on impact, our Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS) distributes the crash force across a large portion of the car’s body to further reduce your risk of injury. And to further help protect passengers, there is a steel cross-member under the dashboard.

    Image2
    Energy-absorbing frontal structure

The unique geometry of the frontal structure and longitudinal steel struts in the doors help disperse crash energy away from the front to the rear of the car, reducing impact effects on driver and passengers. The fact that all Volvos have transversely mounted, compact in-line engines, results in maximum space for deformation and energy dispersion.

    Image2
    Side Impact Protection System (SIPS)

We believe that the car should bear the brunt of any collision, not the people inside it. That’s why we’ve developed our cars so that they offer legendary protection, not just from front and rear impacts, but also from side-on collisions. The steel framework of the car – and that includes the front seat frames – has been designed to help displace the impact of a side-on collision away from the people inside and prevent intrusion into the cabin. And because we understand that an impact with a larger vehicle is a possibility on busy roads, the extremely strong side structure contains ultra-high strength steel to help withstand a severe impact. We have even taken into account the side windows – the Inflatable Curtain (IC) works in conjunction with SIPS and the side airbags to protect people in the front seats. In the rear, SIPS and the IC protect the passengers in the outer rear seat.

    Image2
    Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS)

To help protect the occupants in a rollover situation, Volvo's ROPS is activated by a gyroscope that monitors the vehicle's leaning angle. The safety belt pre-tensioners are activated at every seat to help keep occupants more securely restrained. At the same time, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) deploys and remains inflated for several seconds to help provide extended protection.

    Image2
    Restraint technologies

In a collision, Volvo’s restraint technologies interact to help reduce the impact. The safety belts with pre-tensioners activate within fractions of a second in the event of a collision or rollover and tighten the belt to help keep the occupants restrained. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled manner. Helping to optimise protection, the dual-stage airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the collision. The driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column.

Side airbags in the front seats help reduce the risk of serious injuries in a side collision. In a collision or rollover, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear outboard occupants. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection for subsequent impacts.

    Image2
Safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters

Safety belts are the first line of defence when it comes to help protecting people during a crash. That’s why we introduced them in 1959. We also invented the audible and visual safety belt reminder and today, everybody in the car is reminded to fasten their safety belts before moving off. And in the information display on the instrument panel, you can check that the rear seat passengers have all fastened their safety belts and that nobody unfastens them during the trip. Pre-tensioners activate to tighten the belts within fractions of a second in the event of a collision. The front seat safety belts then release a little so that the driver and passenger are cushioned by the airbags in a controlled fashion.

    Image2
Dual-stage airbags, driver and front passenger

In a frontal collision, the driver and passenger airbags help protect your head, face and chest. But because no two collisions are the same, the airbags adapt the level of inflation depending on the force of the impact. To help minimise the impact on the driver, the driver’s airbag also interacts with the deformation of the collapsible steering column. And if the impact is low enough that the airbags aren’t needed, the system will just deploy safety belt pre-tensioners if necessary.

    Image2
    Passenger airbag cut-off switch

The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off (just use the key), you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.

    Image2
    Side airbags

To help protect the chest and hip during a side-on collision, the side airbags inflate during a side-on impact. They are located in the ideal spot on the front seatback.

    Image2
    Inflatable Curtain (IC)

In a frontal offset or side-on collision, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) helps protect the heads of both front and rear passengers who are sitting on the sides. It also stays inflated for several seconds to provide prolonged protection in the event of secondary impacts. And in Volvos equipped with integrated booster seats, the Inflatable Curtain has been extended downward to improve head protection for smaller or younger children.

    Image2
    Collapsible steering column

The steering column is an advanced part of the safety system, with the upper and lower sections giving way in a controlled manner in a frontal impact to help protect the driver.

    Image2
    Pre-prepared restraints

Wouldn’t it be great it your car could prepare for the worst? Well, your Volvo can, with another IntelliSafe feature that maximises comfort while quietly and unobtrusively going about the business of safety. Using advanced sensors, the car scans the road ahead and if the system spots an obstacle that could result in a collision, it prepares the airbags and seatbelts for the expected crash force. This together with a robust body structure gives the best protection in a low or medium-severe frontal collision.

    Image2
    Energy-absorbing interior

All the panels and door sides are padded with energy-absorbing materials to help reduce the risk of injury to the car’s passengers.

    Image2
    Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS)

It’s something that happens every day in every major city in the world – a moment’s inattention and one driver runs into the back of another. And the result can be long-term injury as a result of whiplash. Volvo, as part of its IntelliSafe programme, has developed a system that can help reduce the risk of long-term injury by as much as 50 per cent. During a rear impact, the WHIPS system moves the entire seatback with the passenger or driver – similar to the way you might gently catch a ball – while the head restraint remains rigid to support the neck. A unique Volvo design.

    Image2
    Head restraints

We have developed head restraints that offer outstanding protection regardless of a person’s height, whether they are seated in the front or the rear. And the rear middle head restraint can be fully retracted into the backrest to improve the driver’s rearward visibility. It’s designed to obstruct taller passengers from sitting down without raising the restraint to its upright position. The outer head restraints can fold forward at the press of a button (optional) to further improve rear vision. In the folded position, they too are designed to obstruct passengers from sitting down without raising the restraints to their upright position.

    Image2
    Anti-submarining protection

To help prevent that passengers slide under and out of their safety belts in the event of a big impact, the seats feature anti-submarining guards which are specially shaped panels angled upwards at the forward edge inside the seats.

    Image2
    Protection of unprotected road-users

To help reduce the effects from an impact on unprotected road-users, the front of the vehicle is gently rounded, the headlamps are integrated flush with the body, and the bonnet is energy-absorbing to act as a crumple zone.

    Image2
    Lower cross-member

To help protect passengers in an oncoming car with bumpers that are lower, there's a cross member integrated low down in the front structure. In an impact, this cross member is designed to help activate the other car’s own crumple zones and other safety features to help reduce the risk of injury. It also works in a side impact with a smaller car.

    Volvo On Call

Wouldn't it be great to have your Volvo in your smartphone? With Volvo On Call you get that – and a lot more. Simply by using your smartphone (iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone), our intelligent app allows you to remotely check the status of your car, lock and unlock the doors, monitor the fuel consumption, keep a car journal, locate your car, send an address to your navigation system and warm up the engine and cabin (if your car is equipped with a fuel-driven engine heater) – wherever you happen to be. Further enhancing connectivity for you and your passengers, this technology also allows you to turn your Volvo into a WiFi hotspot for all your internet-connected devices. And it can be good to know that in the event of a collision or other incident, a push of a button puts you through instantly to emergency services that can pinpoint your location and send the assistance you need. And if a collision is serious enough to deploy any of your car’s airbags, the emergency services are alerted automatically. The system can also alert you to an attempted break-in and if the car is stolen, it can be traced via satellite.

    Image2
    First-aid kit

The first-aid kit is conveniently carried in the load compartment and contains a variety of bandages. The contents are stored in different compartments to make it easier to find what you need in an emergency.

  • Child safety
  • Child safety seats
    Integrated booster cushions, two-stage

You know when your son or daughter reaches that age when he or she is a little too big for a conventional child seat? Well, we’ve got a solution to smooth the transition from child seat to regular seatbelt use, one that will keep your child comfortable and safe – and one that’s always available (for parents, grandparents or whoever suddenly needs to transport a child). Our integrated child booster cushion features a choice of two heights, so smaller children can sit higher for a better view out. And that adjustable height also means that the seatbelts are always positioned to work effectively. That, and the seat belt load limiter, which is adapted to a child with this option, will reduce the strain on a child’s neck and chest during an impact. In a side impact, the booster seat-equipped Volvo benefits from an Inflatable Curtain that has been extended downward to improve head protection for smaller, or younger children. And when you don’t need them, the booster seats disappear into the seat cushions.

    Image2
  • Child safety equipment
    Passenger airbag cut-off switch

The passenger airbag is designed to help protect an adult in a frontal collision in case of collision. But if a child or a person shorter than 140 centimetres is in the front passenger seat, the airbag must first be disengaged to avoid the risk of serious injury. The airbag cut-off switch is positioned on the passenger end of the dashboard and can only be accessed with the door open. When the airbag is switched off (just use the key), you’re notified by a message on the roof console display.

    Image2
    Power child safety lock

The power child lock enables you to conveniently lock the rear doors and rear power windows from the driver’s seat and prevent them from being opened from the inside.

    Image2
  • Security
    Alarm

The alarm is connected to the doors, bonnet, boot and ignition. It also reacts to movement inside the car or the breaking of a window. A level sensor can be added to deter thieves from jacking up the car to steal your wheels or tow it away.

    Image2
    Remote controlled panic alarm

In an emergency, you can use the panic button on the remote control to attract attention. Press and hold the button for at least 3 seconds or press it twice to activate the hazard lights and the horn.

    Image2
    Remote-controlled central locking system

A touch of a button on the remote control or the optional Personal Car Communicator unlocks the doors and bootlid. Use the personal settings menu to decide if the remote unlocks the driver’s door first, or all doors at the same time. You can also close or open all windows (including the sunroof if you have one) and unlock the boot separately.

    Image2
    Automatic door locking

To further enhance your personal security, the doors can be set in the information menu to automatically lock the moment you drive away. Alternatively, lock them swiftly from the front seats using the lock button. Lock buttons are also available for the rear seat passengers.

    Image2
    Global locking and closing

This function allows you to close all windows and lock the car all at once by pressing the button on the remote control or the Personal Car Communicator for two seconds. Alternatively, press the button for two seconds to unlock the car and open all the windows.

    Image2
    Immobiliser and theft-protected locks

Not only will the door locks withstand most break-in attempts, the electronic immobiliser makes it impossible to start the car without the right key. And even if a would-be thief manages to get into the car via the window, the deadlock system makes it impossible to open the door from the inside.

    Image2
    Load compartment floor hatch

Under the load compartment floor you’ve got an extra space for storage. This area is easy to access via a hinged floor hatch. In addition the tailgate – just by the function of its elegant design – overlaps and locks the hatch when it's closed, preventing a smash-and-grab burglary.

    Image2
    Lockable floor

To further foil smash-and-grab burglaries, the closed tailgate – by virtue of its design – overlaps and seals the compartment hidden under the cargo floor. And when you use the private locking function, this area is also rendered inaccessible to others, such as valet car park attendants.

    Image2
    Personal Car Communicator (PCC)

PCC is an advanced remote control that combines ‘keyless drive’ with two-way communication with your Volvo. Keep the PCC with you and the car unlocks automatically as you pull the door handle. Start the engine by pressing a button on the dash, and when you park, lock your car by pressing a button in the door handle. Later in the day, if you’re wondering whether you’ve locked your car, the PCC can tell you by displaying the status that the car was last left in, wherever you are in the world. When you are approaching your car (within a distance of approximately 100 m), the PCC can give you a warning if the car’s alarm has been activated, and an extra visible warning if it’s been activated within the last five minutes.

Approach and Home Safe lighting

Activated with the remote control or the Personal Car Communicator, Approach Lighting provides a warm reception on a dark night. This consists of parking lights, interior lights and ground lighting too, if fitted. Home Safe Lighting is activated with the headlight stalk as you leave the car. This feature provides a low beam from the headlight to accompany you to your door, whether you’re returning home or are out on the road.

    Image2
Power retractable door mirrors with ground lighting

To protect your door mirrors from damage while the car for example is parked or driving through a car wash, press both buttons for the left and right mirror at the same time to fold them flat against the car. They can also be set to fold or unfold automatically every time you lock or unlock the car. The integrated ground lighting is activated by the approach light button on your remote control, enhancing security as you go to and from your car at night. And to facilitate parking, the door mirrors can tilt automatically (or by the push of a button) when reversing.

    Image2
    Laminated windows

Extremely tough laminated glass in the side windows and the rear window turns an attempted smash-and-grab into a total waste of time for the would-be thief. It also contributes to a quiet cabin. Additionally, this option includes water-repellent glass in the front side windows for improved visibility in wet weather.

    Image2
    Lockable wheel bolts

These provide a simple, effective way of reducing the risk of aluminium wheels being stolen. The wheel lock features one uniquely coded socket enabling only you or your garage technician to remove the wheels.

  • Seats
    Ergonomically designed seats

The seats in your Volvo may well be the most important ones in your life – over the lifetime of your car, you will probably spend thousands of hours sitting on them. That’s why we spent so much time developing their ergonomic sculpted design, firm yet comfortable, with supporting side cushions and ergonomic padding. Indeed, our seats are widely accepted as some of the finest in the car world. They have features like stepless lumbar support in the front seats, which allows for the tiniest degrees of adjustment for the best support for each individual. Add in our wide choice of upholstery materials and designs, and you’ll have a seat you’ll never want to leave.

    Image2
    Sport seats

Our new sport seats not only look fantastic, they also give you great side support all the way from your thighs to your shoulders – and in typical Volvo fashion you’ll arrive feeling fresh, even after hours of driving.

    Image2
    Ambient Light

Good lighting is the key to creating the right atmosphere. This is as true in your car as it is in your home. Our new optional Ambient Light package illuminates any features you might need to find at night. A sophisticated white glow ensures you’ll never have to fumble in the dark for cupholders or root around blindly in the door pockets. “The overall effect is very warm and cosy, like being in a warm Swedish house on a cold night,” say our designers. The colour theme corresponds beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the car. Even the optional compass in your rear view mirror lights up in the same elegant white tone.

    Image2
    Fully adjustable front seats

There’s no such thing as a standard-sized Volvo owner. That’s why we’ve taken such care to design seats that can be manually adjusted to fit a huge range of physiques. You can, for example, change the height and the angle of the seat cushion to suit you perfectly and give full under-thigh support, whatever your shape or size. This great adjustability is also optionally available for the passenger seat. To make sure the small of your back is comfortably supported, the lumbar support can be adjusted on each front seat. And the seats slide back and forth over such a large range that even the tallest or shortest drivers will find their perfect driving position.

    Image2
Electrically powered seats with remote memory

You know how frustrating it is to climb behind the wheel, only to find that a partner or colleague has adjusted the seat and door mirrors to suit their particular physique. That’s why you can electrically adjust the driver’s seat and door mirrors to your perfect position and then your Volvo saves the settings. Every time you use your remote control for the central locking, the seat and door mirrors will automatically adjust to your preferences (you get two remote controls or Personal Car Communicators with your Volvo and can order up to four more). Each remote control triggers the corresponding setting from the last time that particular remote control was used. Furthermore, you can save up to three different seat and door mirror settings by using the buttons on the seat. And an electrically adjustable passenger seat is also optionally available.

    Heated seats, front and rear

We Scandinavians are used to snow and ice. And because we understand cold weather better than most, few cars are better equipped to deal with freezing temperatures than your Volvo. In fact, thanks to our heating systems, you may now positively look forward to your drive when the mercury drops. Take our heated seats – since they work particularly quickly, your car will be just as comfortable as your living room in no time at all, with three levels for the driver and front seat passenger. Back seat passengers are catered for as well, with heated seats for the two outer positions, equally featuring three levels.

    Image2
Rear centre armrest with cupholders and storage compartment

For more comfort, the rear centre armrest can be folded down, revealing cupholders and clever storage.

    Image2
    R-Design seats

Inspired by racing seats, the R-Design seats feature seating surfaces in high-friction durable nubuck textile. Together with the seat's side support, this keeps you firmly in place even during the high lateral g-forces that often comes with inspired driving. Alternatively, the seating surfaces are in genuine nappa leather that have a genuine natural feel that is soft to the touch and adds a luxurious touch to the interior. Contrasting stitching enhances the sculpted seat design. And for the uncompromised sporty touch, sections of the seats are upholstered in perforated leather that also are echoed in the handbrake lever, gearshift gaiter and front centre armrest.

  • Climate
    AC climate unit

Not only does this aircon system keep the cabin cool, its built-in filter also prevents dust, pollen and exhaust particles entering the cabin through the ventilation system. The adjustable ventilation and heating vents in the rear means extra comfort if you're in the back - as well as helping keep ice and mist off the rear side windows.

    Image2
    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

    Image2
    Electronic Climate Control (ECC)

Electronic Climate Control (ECC) maintains the cabin temperature you choose and can be set independently for the driver and front passenger. Further contributing to your health and comfort, the system’s humidity sensor helps ensure cabin air has an appropriate level of humidity in relation to the outside climate.

    Image2
    Interior Air Quality System (IAQS)

Volvo’s IAQS continuously monitors incoming air and will, if necessary, temporarily close external air vents to shut out carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone and nitrogen dioxide. When the air vents are opened, an active carbon filter protects the passengers from other harmful gases and unpleasant odours. This helps to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is clean, often cleaner than that outside when driving in heavy city traffic and tunnels.

    Image2
    Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP)

There’s nothing that gets a trip off to a worse start than getting into stuffy car, particularly on a warm day. To prepare a fresh environment in your Volvo, CZIP initiates a ventilation cycle, which is triggered when you unlock the car with your remote control or your Personal Car Communicator. This feature is active on days when it is at least 10°C outside. CZIP also does a great job of venting out allergy and asthma inducing substances.

    Image2
    Adjustable rear air vents

Air vents that are conveniently located in the door pillars at face level create a comfortable environment for rear seat passengers. They also keep ice and mist off the rear side windows, which makes for a safer journey.

    Image2
    Tinted windows

Help cut glare and keep cabin temperatures down in hot, sunny conditions.

    Image2
    Heat-reflecting windscreen

The heat-reflecting windscreen reduces heat radiation from the windscreen and the temperature inside the car by filtering out the sun’s heat-generating invisible infrared rays.

    Image2
    Panoramic roof

This exclusive panoramic roof will further enhance the experience of air and light for everyone inside the Volvo XC60. The front section can be opened at the push of a button, either by sliding it over the rear part, or by tilting it in the rear end. To help maintain climate comfort on sunny days, there's a power operated roller curtain. Dark tinted laminated glass increases comfort and security. It also helps protect from UV radiation. For safety reasons, the design of the panoramic roof is optimised and the two-piece glass is laminated.

    Image2
    Fuel-driven engine and cabin heater

A fuel-driven heater will make your car easier to start, warm up the cabin and help reduce the environmental impact – a cold engine produces far more harmful emissions than a warm one, and will increase engine wear. Start the heater directly, or set the time you’d like to enter your warm and defrosted car. With a remote starter you can activate the heater without going out to the car. And if your car is equipped with Volvo On Call, you can start the heater using your smartphone.

    Image2
    Versatile front centre armrest

The centre console of your Volvo’s cabin is a versatile space with useful storage under the armrest, as well as recesses for smaller items. The armrest also features an AUX input and – depending on your choice of audio system – a USB port to connect your MP3 player or mobile phone to the car’s audio system. Folding back the upper part of the armrest will provide a convenient table for the rear seat passengers.

    Image2

    Power tailgate

The tailgate can be opened automatically in three different ways: with the remote control, using the button on the dashboard, or by pulling the handle. To help minimise risk of injury, only a switch in the tailgate can be used to trigger automatic closing. Also, an anti-pinch strip around the tailgate opening can detect obstructions to help avoid pinching your fingers.

  • Driver's support
    Adaptive Digital Display

What kind of driver are you? The answer can change from day to day. Sometimes you want an active driving experience, at others you just want to cruise. The Adaptive Digital Display instrument option offers three set-ups – Elegance, Eco and Performance. They allow you to change the way you receive information according to your mood and driving style. Elegance with it’s black colour theme is the default mode, showing current and average speed, current and average fuel consumption, distance to empty tank, time and outdoor temperature. It also shows engine temperature and revs, and keeps you informed about your Active Cruise Control status. Another feature, Road Sign Information, displays a small symbol showing the current speed limit and overtaking rules. In a really smart move, your satnav directions pop up in the middle of the display so you don’t have to move your eyes between two screens. The Eco mode has a green colour theme and is all about encouraging and rewarding a fuel-efficient driving style. Of course, you still get the benefit of satnav directions and Road Sign Information. The Performance mode is in a striking red, and gives you a large rev counter with your speed in a digital readout in the centre. On the right, a power meter shows how much engine power is available, which is a useful tool for overtaking. You can also opt for the standard new Analogue Instrument Cluster with a single large dial and two complementary instruments on either side.

    Volvo Sensus Connect

At Volvo, we know that staying connected to the world is important – even if you're inside the car. That's why we developed Sensus Connect. This innovative technology converts your 7-inch screen in the dashboard into an internet connected infotainment hub, giving you access to a host of convenient in-car apps for your entertainment, navigation, control, connectivity and service. This also means your Volvo already today is technologically prepared for coming web and cloud-based in-car infotainment functions. Adding Sensus Navigation will provide you with connected navigation functions, smartly integrated with your car. And with Volvo On Call, you get a WiFi hotspot for all your internet-connected mobile devices – it also includes an innovative smartphone app that gives you access to a host of remote functions, such as locking/unlocking the doors, starting the engine heater and just checking up on your car.

Volvo's intuitive SENSUS screen allows you to explore conveniently the hi-tech features of your car and personalise them to suit your needs. All information is displayed in a high-resolution 5-inch or 7-inch colour screen. A push of the MY CAR button in the centre console gives you access to all system settings like City Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection, Driver Alert Control, Lane Keeping Aid, Radar Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Road Sign Information (RSI), lights, door mirrors, climate, central locking, audio and phone. The multimedia audio systems with 7-inch screen will also display the Road Traffic Information (RTI) navigation system, park assist camera, DVD, digital TV etc. Everything is conveniently controlled using the centre console or steering wheel controls – so you can keep your attention on the traffic and your hands on the steering wheel. And with our new Sensus Connect solutions, you convert the 7-inch Sensus screen into an internet-connected infotainment hub. It will give you further access to advanced in-car infotainment and connectivity, while enabling future web and cloud based in-car functionality.

    Image2
    Cruise control

Conveniently operated from the steering wheel, cruise control allows you to drive in a more relaxed way without having to keep your foot on the accelerator. The car maintains the speed you choose until you turn off the cruise control or press the brake, accelerator or clutch. After braking or using the clutch, the car returns to its previous cruising speed at the touch of a button. After accelerating – for instance to overtake – your car automatically reverts to its previous cruising speed once you release the accelerator.

    Image2
    Speed limiter

This helps ensure that you don't exceed a certain speed. Just set a speed using the steering wheel controls. When you reach the set speed you'll notice some subtle resistance feedback from the accelerator. To override the speed limiter all you have to do is press down the accelerator.

    Image2
    Trip computer

Operated via the indicator stalk, the trip computer shows current and average fuel consumption, how far the fuel will take you and average speed – helping you drive more economically.

    Image2
    Ambient temperature gauge

Monitors the outside temperature and warns you if there is any risk of black ice.

    Image2
    Cornering Light

At speeds of up to 30 km/h, the optional Cornering Light illuminates the area in which you’re turning at up to 15 degrees around the car for safer manoeuvring – for instance if you’re turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night.

    Image2
Park assist sensors, rear and front

Activated when you reverse, rear park assist sensors help you when manoeuvring into tight spaces. The audio system is turned down and a pulsating sound from the rear loudspeakers increases in frequency as the car gets closer to the obstacle, becoming a continuous tone when it’s time to stop. Front park assist sensors perform a similar function at the front of the vehicle – alerting you via the front loudspeakers. The centre console SENSUS screen shows a top view of the car and the activated sensors.

    Image2
Electrically powered foldable rear head restraints

The outer head restraints can be folded forward so they don’t block your field of vision when the rear seats are unoccupied. In the folded position, they are designed to obstruct passengers from sitting down without raising the restraints to their upright position. The rear middle head restraint can be fully retracted into the backrest to further improve rear vision. It’s designed to obstruct taller passengers from sitting down without raising the restraint to its upright position.

    Image2
    Rain sensor

Once activated, the rain sensor can start the windscreen wipers as soon as it begins to rain or if water splashes onto the windscreen. For your convenience, it can also automatically adapt the intermittent windscreen-wiper function. Its sensitivity can be adjusted via a ring on the wiper stalk.

    Image2
Daytime Running Lights with daylight sensor

With the light switch in the Auto position, the fuel-saving Daytime Running Lights are automatically activated. If the daylight becomes to dim, or if you enter a tunnel for example, a sensor will detect the changed light conditions and activate your car's headlights. They will also be activated if you turn on the windscreen wipers or the rear fog light. The system will turn the headlights automatically as well.

    Image2
Electrically adjustable heated outer rear-view mirrors

Easily adjusted from the driver's seat, the power adjustable door mirrors are electrically heated and therefore kept free from frost in cold weather.

    Image2
    Multifunctional door mirrors

The generously dimensioned door mirrors are power operated using a joystick in the driver's door panel. Indicators are embedded in the sides of the mirror – a nudge of the indicator stalk will activate three flashes of the indicator light, so there's less risk your turn will go unannounced. To further enhance your safety and comfort, there are options such as power folding, ground lighting and Volvo's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS).

    Image2
    Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror

Ending the need to take your hand off the steering wheel and stop headlight beams shining in your eyes, the anti-dazzle function is stepless and returns to normal when it's no longer needed.

    Image2
Automatically dimmed inner rear-view mirror with compass

This is a mirror that automatically adjusts itself to deflect the headlamp beams of the car behind you. When there's no light to dazzle you, it automatically readjusts to its normal
setting. And to help you take a bearing, your direction is continuously displayed in the rear view mirror glass.

    Image2
Auto-dimming door mirrors with ground lighting

To help you negotiate those tight parking spots, your Volvo has electrically foldable door mirrors. And to make sure that a following car’s headlights don’t dazzle you, an auto-dimming function reduces intrusive light reflection. The door mirror auto-dimming function uses the same sensor located in your interior rearview mirror, which also dims when a following car’s headlights are too bright. This makes your journey safer and more relaxing at night. A handy light in each door mirror illuminates the ground beneath the front doors as you approach the car, which means you’ll see puddles and potential problems well in advance. The light also gives you extra security at night, especially in dark parking areas.

    Image2
    Illuminated vanity mirror

Fitted in the sun visor, lights come on when you open the vanity mirror cover – convenient and practical. Available for both the driver and front passenger.

    Image2
    Power windows, front and rear

The power windows have controls conveniently located in the door armrests. The front windows can be lowered or raised with a quick press or pull of a button, and you can lock the back windows from the driver’s seat if you’re travelling with small children. In this case, you’ll also be glad of the automatic anti-clamp protection, which will stop a window from closing on a trapped little hand.

    Image2
    Interior lighting

An entry light on both the driver and front passenger side lights the foot-well area as you get into the car. Front reading lamps are integrated in the roof console. The rear seat reading lamps are recessed in the roof and shaded to avoid dazzling the driver. The interior light will fade out gradually after the doors have been closed, but will switch off immediately if the ignition is turned on or the doors are locked.

    Image2
    Speed-dependent power steering

The optional speed-dependent and progressive power steering uses sophisticated, speed-sensitive technology to regulate the amount of power assistance you need while driving. At highway speeds, the steering is firm and positive. When parking or in slow traffic, the steering is light and effortless. While the steering sensitivity adjusts automatically depending on your car’s speed, you can choose in the SENSUS screen between three levels of overall steering sensitivity – for low steering effort, medium or high.

    Image2
    Power Parking Brake (PPB)

The Power Parking Brake (PPB) makes moving off from steep gradients easier. Just press the PPB button, engage DRIVE or your first gear and pull away. The PPB will release automatically.

    Image2
    Headlamp level adjuster

The headlamp level adjuster allows the driver to lower or raise the angle of the headlight beam by turning a dial on the instrument panel. This is particularly useful when driving at night with a full load. Only applies to halogen headlamps; Dual Xenon Active Bending Lights adjust automatically.

    Image2
    Extra power outlet

Neatly integrated at the rear end of the tunnel console, the extra power outlet can provide electricity for a phone charger, laptop, game console, DVD player or other portable electronic devices.

Hide your gear with this specially designed load cover with a printed route map and a colour-coordinated printed Volvo Ocean Race logo.

    Image2
    Flat-folding three-split 40/20/40 rear seat

To provide multiple load configurations with a flat load floor, the rear backrest is split three-ways in the proportions 40/20/40. If you need extra space for ski gear for that trip to the Alps, lowering the centre section provides ample space for loading snowboards and skis, while still keeping the two most comfortable seats. What’s more, the backrests and head restraints only take one step to fold.

    Image2
    Flat-folding front passenger seat

To enable you to carry very long objects inside your Volvo, the front passenger seat backrest can be conveniently folded flat as an option. Not available together with Sport seats.

    Image2
    Load organiser, cargo compartment

This easily installed telescopic frame with floor rails and load holder makes it simple to secure and organise bags, gear and loose items. You can separate fragile objects from other cargo, and divide the cargo area in two if required. And if the organiser isn’t needed, it’s easy to remove and store.

    Image2

  • Towing
    Automatic levelling

When you tow or carry a heavy load, automatic levelling adjusts the rear suspension so the vehicle will maintain stability, as well as the correct ground clearance and headlight angle.

    Image2
    Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)

When you are towing a trailer or caravan, the Trailer Stability Assist can counteract so-called snaking to help maintain stability. TSA continuously monitors oscillation tendencies and can help prevent this scenario by braking one or more wheel to compensate. If this is not sufficient, or if you ignore it, all four wheels will be braked and engine torque will be reduced. TSA is active at speeds from 50km/h.

Do you want an exhilarating drive, but won't compromise with fuel consumption and environmental care? With our lightweight Drive-E powertrain generation no efforts have been spared to give you the most efficient, confident and exciting driving experience – for today as well as for the future.

Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology and innovative out-of-the-box thinking, our engineers have created a range of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines with the same power output and driveability as considerably larger engines with six cylinders or more. And what's even better – the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions are supremely low. Low friction technology, innovative engine management systems, common rail direct fuel injection and combined supercharger/turbo technology are some of the secrets behind this marvel of pure efficiency – the supercharger gives more torque at low revs for a great throttle response, with the turbo boost kicking in at higher revs.

Together with the fuel-saving eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, the 306 hp/400 Nm T6 drivetrain ensures you'll always be in the right gear to enjoy superior comfort and engine response. And if you'd like to boost your efficiency even further, our intelligent ECO+ function optimises the engine, the automatic transmission and the climate system to further lower your fuel consumption with about 5%.

    Image2
    Six-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged petrol engine (T6 AWD)

Enjoy the refined smoothness and exciting dynamics of a powerful in-line six-cylinder petrol engine. Our 3.0-litre T6 features a twin-scroll turbo, which mimics the effect of two sequential turbochargers in a lighter more efficient package. It minimises ‘turbo lag’ for instantly responsive performance at all revs, while also increasing fuel efficiency.

The relaxed big-displacement feel of the T6 is partly down to its impressive maximum torque of 440Nm, which is available from a low 2100rpm. This engine majors on both performance and refinement, while smart technology such as engine braking energy regeneration delivers excellent fuel efficiency and low CO₂ emissions.

For an even more enthusiast-oriented and safe driving experience in all weather conditions, this engine is mated to Volvo’s All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™ and a six-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox with a sport mode, and a manual mode. Finally, with the Volvo-approved Polestar software, you can give your T6 even more of a performance boost.

    Image2
Five-cylinder common rail turbodiesel engine (D3)

We designed this new 2.0-litre five-cylinder 136 hp turbodiesel for a very special reason: to give you a top-notch driving experience of refinement and efficiency. The single turbocharger ensures immense power just above idling. The relaxed character and flexibility of this engine will infuse your drive with the composed feeling of being in control in all situations without compromising on the fun of driving.

What´s more low fuel consumption, superior mileage and reduced CO₂ emissions are there for you to enjoy – especially if you choose the D3 with manual transmission. Optimised engine management system together with a range of technical modifications make the D3 one of the most efficient engines in its class. Engine brake energy regeneration, Volvo’s Start/Stop technology (manual transmission) and front-wheel drive further enhance fuel efficiency.

The D3 comes with a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic.

    Image2
    Four-cylinder Drive-E common rail twin-turbodiesel engine (D4)

With our lightweight Drive-E diesel powertrain generation no efforts have been spared to give you the most efficient, confident and exciting driving experience – for today as well as for the future.

Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology and innovative out-of-the-box thinking, our engineers have created a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with the same power output and driveability as a considerably larger engine. And what's even better – the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions are supremely low. Low friction technology, innovative engine management systems and advanced twin-turbo technology are some of the secrets behind this marvel of pure efficiency – Volvo's self adapting i-Art technology is a world first that ensures the ideal amount of fuel is injected in each cylinder for optimum fuel efficiency and performance. Adding the fuel-saving eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, the 181 hp/400 Nm D4 drivetrain ensures you'll always be in the right gear to enjoy superior comfort and engine response.

And if you'd like to boost your efficiency even further, our intelligent ECO+ function optimises the engine, the automatic transmission and the climate system to further lower your fuel consumption with about 5%. This D4 is available with an enhanced six-speed manual gearbox or a eight-speed Geartronic automatic.

    Image2
Five-cylinder common rail turbodiesel engine (D4)

We don’t see why power, refinement, a great driving experience and superb fuel efficiency can’t all be provided by one engine. That’s exactly why we designed this 2.0-litre five-cylinder 163hp turbodiesel.

The five-cylinder engine offers smooth running. An impressive amount of torque is available at engine speeds not much above idle, which accounts for its relaxed, flexible and responsive performance. So the driving experience is great, but not at the expense of CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption - a range of technical developments make the D4 one of the most efficient engines in its class. The D4 also features fuel-saving and CO₂-reducing engine braking energy regeneration and Volvo’s Start/Stop technology.

The D4 comes with a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

    Image2
Five-cylinder common rail turbodiesel engine (D4 AWD)

We engineered this engine for Volvo drivers who desire even more power and performance, but still want the benefits of a refined and fuel-efficient powerplant. This smooth-revving 2.4-litre 181hp five-cylinder engine boasts sequential twin turbochargers – a smaller one provides virtually lag-free low-rev response, whilst a larger one comes on line as revs and speed rise.

These turbos help deliver flexible and responsive power right across the rev range. And a very generous 420Nm of torque gives the D4 AWD it’s relaxed but punchy performance characteristic. That’s quite handy for quick and safe overtaking, especially in the 80-120km/h speed range. So the D4 AWD delivers a great driving experience, but not at the expense of fuel efficiency – with Volvo’s Start/Stop system and fuel-saving engine braking energy regeneration, the D4 AWD with manual transmission is one of the most fuel-efficient and lowest-emitting cars in its class.

There are two six-speed gearboxes to choose from: our manual transmission and our Geartronic automatic with sport mode. For ultimate driving dynamics, the engine comes with All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™.

    Image2
    Five-cylinder common rail twin-turbodiesel engine (D5/D5 AWD)

We engineered this engine for Volvo drivers who desire even more power and performance, but still want the benefits of a refined and fuel-efficient powerplant. This 2.4-litre five-cylinder engine offers smooth running. It also boasts sequential twin turbochargers – a smaller one provides virtually lag-free low-rev response, whilst a larger one comes on line as revs and speed rise.

These turbos help deliver flexible and responsive power right across the rev range. And a very generous 440Nm of torque with an automatic gearbox (420Nm with a manual) developed from as low as 1500rpm gives the D5 its relaxed but punchy performance characteristic. That’s quite handy for quick and safe overtaking, especially in the 80-120km/h speed range. So the D5 delivers a great driving experience, but not at the expense of fuel efficiency or CO₂ emissions – with Volvo’s Start/Stop system and fuel-saving and CO₂-reducing engine braking energy regeneration, the D5 with manual transmission is one of the most fuel-efficient and lowest CO₂-emitting powertrains in its class.

There are two six-speed gearboxes to choose from: our manual transmission and our Geartronic automatic with sport mode and a manual mode. To boost its driving dynamics even more, you can add All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™.

    Image2
  • Transmission
    Six-speed manual gearbox

For maximum driving enjoyment, the six-speed manual gearbox offers fluid and precise gear selection. The sixth gear provides relaxed cruising, improved fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions on the motorway. And the smooth action of the clutch assures that you move off with confidence and grace.

    Image2
    Six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a car that’s just as much at home towing a caravan or negotiating heavy traffic as it is taking on a challenging open road? Well, you can. With the six-speed Geartronic you stay in control in all conditions. With an all-new gearshifter in piano black finish with white lettering, this is a responsive automatic that can instantly switch to manual mode when you need it. Depending on engine, the Geartronic transmission also features a sport mode for more active driving – when it is activated, the gearbox reacts more urgently to throttle inputs and allows the engine higher revs during acceleration.

    Image2
    Eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission

Do you want an intuitive, responsive powertrain that feels like an extension of your senses? Mated to our all-new generation turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E engines, this newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission ensures you're always in the right gear – whether it's for optimal engine response and driveability, or for a smooth driving experience with the highest fuel-efficiency.

    Image2
    Gearshift paddles

If you enjoy driving, our new gearshift paddles for the automatic transmission will add even more fun behind the steering wheel. They offer faster and more precise manual gear changes. And by allowing you to keep your hands on the steering wheel, they also ensure you’re always 100 per cent in control of your car. (Only in combination with a 3-spoke steering wheel)

    Image2
    Start/Stop technology

Imagine how much energy could be saved if every car, at every traffic light in the world, switched off its engine… Our Start/Stop technology does just that. Once your engine has warmed up, and you bring your car to a halt, put it in neutral and release the clutch, the engine automatically shuts off. And the instant you press the clutch pedal, the engine restarts and you’re on the go. It reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 8%. An extra battery ensures that all infotainment and comfort systems function as usual while the engine is off. The Start/Stop system can be deactivated with the touch of a button in the centre console and is active between 0° and +30°C.

    Image2
    Engine braking energy regeneration

Take advantage of energy. Every time you release the accelerator while a gear is engaged, the engine braking energy that otherwise would be wasted is fed back to the battery. This reduces the average load of the alternator and results in 2-3 per cent lower fuel consumption – a valuable contribution to fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions.

    All-wheel Drive (AWD)

The advanced AWD technology with Instant Traction™ helps increase driving stability and traction on all road surfaces, in all weather conditions. It has an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels, the throttle, engine torque, engine speed and the brakes. As driving conditions change, wheels with the best grip get the most power. When a tyre loses traction, power is reduced to that wheel and instantly transferred to the more sure-footed wheels.

    Image2
    Hill Start Assist

Hill Start Assist automatically keeps the brake pressure while you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, so you’ll never slide backwards or stall your engine again when driving off up an incline. Hill Start Assist also works in reverse gear.

    Image2
    Hill Descent Control

Hill Descent Control offers a smooth and controlled hill descent on steep, rough and slippery roads. Simply push the Hill Descent Control button and the vehicle will descend using the brake system to control each wheel’s rotating speed – you are then free to concentrate fully on steering. Hill Descent Control also makes it easier to move off when towing a heavy trailer or a boat on a trailer up a ramp. The technology also works in reverse gear.

    Image2
  • Chassis & Steering
    Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS)

To help protect the occupants in a rollover situation, Volvo's ROPS is activated by a gyroscope that monitors the vehicle's leaning angle. The safety belt pre-tensioners are activated at every seat to help keep occupants more securely restrained. At the same time, the Inflatable Curtain (IC) deploys and remains inflated for several seconds to help provide extended protection.

    Image2
    Chassis

The chassis of your XC60 has been tuned for a very comfortable ride, but not at the expense of sporty and well-balanced handling. The advanced multi-link rear and MacPherson front suspension mounted on a rigid body give you a sense of control and confidence on the road. Very generous ground clearance (230mm) and short overhangs contribute to an excellent performance on rough roads with a great ability to go off-road, too.

    Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept)

The Four-C active chassis provides a choice of three distinctive driving modes – Comfort, Sport or Advanced. Whichever you choose, this technology monitors the car, road and driver 500 times per second, simultaneously adjusting each shock absorber to maintain optimal handling. At the heart of Four-C is a high-tech electronic management system, which continuously controls the four Monroe-Öhlins shock absorbers and interacts with the DSTC system, engine, brakes and steering to enhance your chosen handling style.

    Image2
    Automatic levelling

When you tow or carry a heavy load, automatic levelling adjusts the rear suspension so the vehicle will maintain stability, as well as the correct ground clearance and headlight angle.

    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.

    Fuel-saving design

Better design really can make a difference. To reduce energy losses from wind and rolling resistance, we use advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials and low friction technology. Together with our state-of-the-art engines, this adds up to lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions for your car.

    Image2
Advanced petrol engine emission control and diesel particulate filter

Going into action quickly after a cold start, Volvo’s advanced emission control eliminates between 95 and 99 per cent of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from petrol engine exhaust gases. And Volvo turbodiesels feature a particulate filter that removes about 95 per cent of the particles from diesel exhaust gases.

    Image2

    Power child safety lock

The power child lock enables you to conveniently lock the rear doors and rear power windows from the driver’s seat and prevent them from being opened from the inside.

  • Security

    Image2

    Heated windscreen

Standing outside your car scraping off the ice on a cold winter’s morning isn’t the best start to your day. Now, thanks to our heated windscreen, all you need to do is push a button. When you do, the windscreen will start de-icing immediately just like the rear window and door mirrors, and you’ll soon be on your way.

  • Storage
    Illuminated lockable glovebox

As well as being lockable and illuminated, the glovebox also comes with pencil and credit card holders.

    Image2
    Front door panel storage pockets

Both driver and front seat passenger have door panel storage pockets.

    Image2
    Rear cabin storage pockets

Conveniently located on the back of the front seats, these pockets provide even more storage space.

    Image2
Rear centre armrest with cupholders and storage compartment

For more comfort, the rear centre armrest can be folded down, revealing cupholders and clever storage.

    Image2
    Sensus screen

    Image2
    Ambient temperature gauge

Monitors the outside temperature and warns you if there is any risk of black ice.

    Image2
    Cornering Light

At speeds of up to 30 km/h, the optional Cornering Light illuminates the area in which you’re turning at up to 15 degrees around the car for safer manoeuvring – for instance if you’re turning into a small road or driving through a narrow gateway at night.

  • Load compartment
    Volvo Ocean Race load cover

Hide your gear with this specially designed load cover with a printed route map and a colour-coordinated printed Volvo Ocean Race logo.

    Image2
    Flat-folding three-split 40/20/40 rear seat

To provide multiple load configurations with a flat load floor, the rear backrest is split three-ways in the proportions 40/20/40. If you need extra space for ski gear for that trip to the Alps, lowering the centre section provides ample space for loading snowboards and skis, while still keeping the two most comfortable seats. What’s more, the backrests and head restraints only take one step to fold.

    Image2
    Flat-folding front passenger seat

To enable you to carry very long objects inside your Volvo, the front passenger seat backrest can be conveniently folded flat as an option. Not available together with Sport seats.

    Image2
    Load cover

Use this retractable load cover to conceal your gear in the load compartment. It’s colour-coordinated with the interior.

    Image2
    Net pocket kit

These three elastic net pockets provide practical storage for small items on the front passenger side of the tunnel console and along both side panels in the load compartment.

    Image2
    Grocery bag holder

Folds up from the load compartment floor to accommodate shopping bags or other cargo – secure with hooks and an elastic strap. When not in use, it's hidden in the floor.

    Image2
    Power outlet, luggage compartment

By adding a 12V power outlet in the luggage compartment, you'll easily be able to connect extra electrical equipment.

    Image2
  • Load securing
    Pull-up safety net

This ingenious feature, which will keep stowed items safely in the boot, is split for maximum flexibility. You can pull up the wide part behind two back seats and still fold down the small part of the backrest for long and bulky loads.

    Image2

  • Engines
    Four-cylinder Drive-E turbocharged petrol engine (T5)

With our lightweight Drive-E powertrain generation no efforts have been spared to give you the most efficient, confident and exciting driving experience – for today as well as for the future.

Utilising state-of-the-art engine technology and innovative out-of-the-box thinking, our engineers have created a range of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines with the same power output and driveability as considerably larges engines with six cylinders or more. And what's even better – the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions are supremely low. Low friction technology, innovative engine management systems, common rail fuel injection and advanced turbo technology are some of the secrets behind this marvel of pure efficiency.

Together with the fuel-saving eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, the 245 hp/350 Nm T5 drivetrain ensures you'll always be in the right gear to enjoy superior comfort and engine response. And if you'd like to boost your efficiency even further, our intelligent ECO+ function optimises the engine, the automatic transmission and the climate system to further lower your fuel consumption with about 5%.

    Image2
Five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (T5/T5 AWD)

For a truly sporty driving experience, there’s the high-performance 254 hp five-cylinder T5 petrol turbo engine. This smooth source of energy delivers an exceptionally quick and powerful response throughout the entire rev range. A max torque of a full 360 Nm (400 Nm with overboost) makes this engine the natural choice if you want to maximise your performance. Start/Stop technology and engine brake energy regeneration contribute to excellent fuel economy and reduced CO₂ emissions.

The T5 is available with a six-speed Geartronic automatic with sport mode. For ultimate driving dynamics you can add All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™.

    Four-cylinder Drive-E supercharger/turbocharged petrol engine (T6)

    Image2
    R-Design Sport chassis

If you want an even more driver-focused experience, you can now have your XC60 fitted with our R-Design Sport Chassis, which was previously only available on the R-Design model. The springs, shocks and anti-roll bars are all sports-tuned for more road-hugging control.

    Image2
    Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept)

The Four-C active chassis provides a choice of three distinctive driving modes – Comfort, Sport or Advanced. Whichever you choose, this technology monitors the car, road and driver 500 times per second, simultaneously adjusting each shock absorber to maintain optimal handling. At the heart of Four-C is a high-tech electronic management system, which continuously controls the four Monroe-Öhlins shock absorbers and interacts with the DSTC system, engine, brakes and steering to enhance your chosen handling style.

    Image2
    Automatic levelling

When you tow or carry a heavy load, automatic levelling adjusts the rear suspension so the vehicle will maintain stability, as well as the correct ground clearance and headlight angle.

  • Inside
    Cabin filter

Preventing dust and pollen from entering the cabin via the ventilation system, the cabin filter is a real benefit to driver and passengers, especially those prone to hay fever or other allergies.
