CITY SAFETY AND PILOT ASSIST
YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL
Volvo Cars engineers Andreas Lindberg and Fredrik Lundholm explain how City Safety and Pilot Assist technologies have the ability to make your life easier and protect you
Words: Leo Wilkinson
“City Safety is our technology which helps you avoid collisions,” says Andreas Lindberg, Engineer, Collision Avoidance, at Volvo Cars
New-generation City Safety in the Volvo XC60 uses advanced radar and camera technology to detect potential hazards such as other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals ahead of you. It warns you and can then brake for you to help avoid or mitigate a collision if you don’t react in time.
Volvo Cars’ City Safety technology can also help steer you away from an oncoming car. “It acts as a last resort, and you can always override it,” Andreas says. “Even if this function is used only once in the car’s lifetime, though, you’ll be glad you had it. It could make all the difference.”
If you don’t act on the warnings and the car starts to drift into an occupied lane, the new steer assist function gently steers you back into your lane to help avoid a collision.

“The beauty of our City Safety technology is that it’s unnoticeable most of the time, but reacts instantly when you need it”

“These things don’t take much effort individually, but they’re tiring in the long run because they occupy your subconscious thinking,” says Fredrik Lundholm, Pilot Assist engineer at Volvo Cars.
