Clive Brook Volvo in Bradford has been crowned the ‘Most Improved Dealership of the Year’, ahead of five other shortlisted nominees, at one of the biggest award ceremonies in the retail motor industry.
Hosted by award-winning TV and radio presenter, Colin Murray, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 12 July, the Motor Trader Awards 2017 had a record number of entries and finalists, spanning across 22 categories, which rewards the best-performing companies and individuals in the UK motor trade.
Before an audience of over 1,100 people, Clive Brook Bradford, located on Canal Road, received the coveted accolade for ‘Most Improved Dealership of the Year’ having impressed the judging panel with its management driven change, business strategy and profit growth, even after securing a second Clive Brook Volvo site in Huddersfield in 2015.
Managing director, Clive Brook, had the vision of one day owning his own Volvo dealership when he was an apprentice technician with the franchise. Since securing the seven-figure funding to buy Bradford Volvo in 2008, the performance in the past two years in particular has been excellent with a 275% improvement in net profit between 2015 and 2016.
Underpinning this success was a healthy contribution of aftersales income, more than 10% of it from pre-sold service plans.
Clive Brook commented: “For me, servicing is a retention tool, it drives everything else. We reached a long-term goal in 2016 of achieving 75% absorption, highest on one and two-year-old cars, but still close to 60% on older vehicles. That is the improvement that I’m proudest of achieving.
“The success and turnaround of Bradford however wouldn’t have been achieved without the efforts of the entire dealership team, whom I am immensely proud of, where six of the original 14 employees are among the 37 that now work at Bradford,” he added.

CLIVE BROOK VOLVO CUSTOMERS RIDE OUT INTO THE YORKSHIRE DALES
This April Clive Brook Volvo hosted their annual off site event at the Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa near Bolton Abbey where approximately 100 customers took a test drive in the Volvo model of their choice. Many of these customers are Volvo owners with the intention to purchase a new Volvo in the near future.
The day started off with a presentation by Mike, one of Volvo’s product geniuses, who enlightened us with the latest information on technology, safety and the future of Volvo cars, whilst answering some relevant and challenging questions. After which the Clive Brook demonstration team took to the roads in the breath taking Yorkshire Dales.
Supporting the event was Yorkshire Trike Tours and Jason and Michael provided an excellent alternative attraction with over 40 customers, including Clive himself, taking the opportunity of a brief tour of the Devonshire Estate with refreshments and buffet served on their return.

Clive Brook West Yorkshire Volvo retailers named as finalists in prestigious industry award
West Yorkshire Volvo retailers Clive Brook has been shortlisted for a prestigious industry award by the sector’s leading magazine Automotive Management.
With retailers in Huddersfield and Bradford the business has been shortlisted for the magazine’s annual awards in the ‘Most Improved Dealer’ and ‘Best Retail Group’ categories.
Managing director Clive Brook, who began his career as a Volvo technician and challenged his previous employers, a well respected group in the sector, to allow him to buy out a Volvo business in 2007 because he had firm ideas about customer service and had the desire to be his own boss, submitted his entry as the business celebrated its 10th anniversary year.
He said: “I was offered the then failing Bradford operation and secured the funding needed to complete the deal. The mood went from ‘let’s get going’ to ‘survive or die’ as the recession bit and I battled for custom from my previous employer.”
Seven years later Clive acquired the Huddersfield operation from the same previous employer, the business where he had ‘cut his teeth’ in the trade and had originally hoped to buy. By 2016 Clive and his team had increased net profit at Bradford by 304% and had introduced a profitable fleet department sourcing vehicles and providing support for local businesses looking for company cars in the same year. In 2016 both businesses sold 813 new cars and 580 used vehicles whilst 2017 saw the company exceed 1,000 new car registrations.
He added: “We have shifted our focus in recent years to sell used vehicles closer to home. It makes no sense selling cars all over the country. You want customers that you can build a relationship with because they will return for servicing and to buy cars if you treat them well.”
Last year Clive Brook was named as one of 15 car dealerships to qualify for the magazine’s ‘Best UK Dealership To Work For 2017’. Automotive Management teamed up with Best Companies Group, that produces similar studies in other industries, to find and recognise the best places to work in the franchised retail sector. Clive Brook was measured on a range of key metrics which included leadership, planning, culture and economics, working environment, relationships with managers, training and development and pay/benefits.
Clive Brook employs 52 full-time and seven part-time staff members between its two dealerships with nine of the original 14 staff members employed when it first started trading remaining with the company.

With dealerships in Bradford and Huddersfield, Volvo dealership Clive Brook invited 24 lucky customers on their very own ‘Tour of Yorkshire’ with British UCI Continental cycling team, Madison Genesis. Members of the dealership, along with 24 customers, were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to ‘ride out’ with one of the teams who took part in this year’s Tour of Britain, Madison Genesis, around the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Skipton Road’s Ilkley Cycles’ Fuel Station Cafe played host to the team and guests before they all mounted their bikes and headed off for a 40-mile ride across the Yorkshire countryside, through the picturesque countryside of Bolton Abbey. Stopping for some well-earned coffee and cake at The Cavendish Pavilion, the group then made the six-mile journey back to Ilkley for lunch at local tapas restaurant, La Casita. Clive Brook commented on the day: “I was delighted that we were, again, able to host this amazing event with some of our customers and offer them a truly special day. We have so many loyal customers at the dealership that are extremely keen cyclists and were thrilled to be given to opportunity to race some of Britain’s best cycling talent. “Thanks to Volvo’s ties with Madison Genesis, this is the third year we have been able to run a ride out event with the cycling team.
