XC40 Expert Reviews & Awards
WhatCar? Car of the Year 2018
The Volvo XC40 is a staggeringly good SUV for any family, taking comfort, quality and safety to another level, all at a reasonable price.
You’ll love how grown-up the XC40 feels, from its punchy but hushed four-cylinder diesel engine to its solidly constructed interior, which features swathes of soft-touch plastics and remains impressively quiet at a cruise.
As well as looking and feeling like a premium product, the XC40 is a superb family SUV. The amount of space on offer in its front and rear seats, as well as its capacious boot, will make busy family life easier, while the list of standard equipment has every need (and most wants) ticked. On top of all that, competitive pricing, both at list price and via finance, means the XC40 is a hugely attractive prospect next to its rivals.
The Volvo XC40 is the 2018 Auto Express Small Premium SUV of the Year
As you would expect, the XC40 comes loaded with all the latest safety kit, making it a great family car, while the high-quality and individual interior, with its raft of advanced equipment, gives the SUV genuine premium appeal.
The first thing you notice when you climb aboard is how well built the XC40 is compared with its rivals. Volvo’s clever portrait touchscreen infotainment system takes pride of place in the dashboard, and it’s offered with tech including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A powerful Harman Kardon stereo features on the long list of options as well.

The stylish new Volvo XC40 is a car of substance and standing in an SUV sector now spreading in all directions.
"Great ride comfort and general refinement, even on big alloy wheels." - Honest John
You can’t really overstate the desirability of the XC40. Its bluff, boxy shape, angular contrasting roof is complete with a colour palette that’s so on-trend it would make Farrow and Ball proud. The interior, too, features a range of materials and finishes that make an Audi or BMW look rather unimaginative, yet the XC40 feels just as grown-up and classy.
Inside and out, the XC40 is refreshingly different yet achingly on-trend, and is about the best car in its class, which is saying something given that it includes rivals like the BMW X2, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar E-Pace and Audi Q3.
Super-desirable styling, complete with contrast roof options and an interior that would shame a minimalist Scandi hotel.
"Volvo XC40, safety and appeal"
The XC40 obtained a first Car of the Year award for Volvo, as announced in Geneva International Motor Show, prior to the opening of the show in Palexpo. The appealing SUV offer, a brilliant complement to XC90 and XC60 models, had 325 points and 24 individual top votes after a rather lonely race in front of the Seat Ibiza, which received 242 points.
Quality, looks, ruggedness and, of course, safety are among the aspects appreciated by Jury members for this SUV of surely high acceptance. The roomy cabin shows a good level of equipment even in the entry-level versions, with dual zone climate system, rear parking sensors and LED headlights.
Alchemy of leather
For more than thirty years, the interiors of Volvo cars have been graced with the finest leather from Bridge of Weir Leather Company in Scotland. Because behind every luxurious piece of Bridge of Weir leather, you’ll find over a century’s worth of craftsmanship, knowledge and expertise. In fact, many consider it to be the finest automotive leather in the world. Well, why else would it be in your Volvo?
Crystal clear thinking
"Acclaimed Swedish designer Lena Bergström has collaborated with Volvo Cars’ design team to create the first bespoke range of glassware for the Volvo Car Lifestyle Collection. She tells us about the inspiration behind the designs."
Skiing in Åre
Skiing seems to come naturally to the Swedes. Perhaps it’s growing up in a country where months of uninterrupted ice and snow are the norm, and falling temperatures and tricky terrain are seen as springboards to adventure rather than stumbling blocks? Whatever it is, the moment you witness a six-year-old whizzing by you at speeds you could only dream of, you soon realise the Swedes were built for the slopes.
