Family Beach Clean, Storytelling & Eco-education - 30th March 2019
Fittingly on the environmental day 'Earth Hour' - Donalds Volvo Ipswich are hosting a family day for children and adults alike, to learn about the effects of plastics in our seas and oceans. The day will be split between a relaxed and informative presentation at our new state-of-the-art showroom at Futura Park in Ipswich, followed by a public reading of Volvo's new children's book 'The Day The Ocean Went Away'. The story is about a little boy called Jack, who loves the ocean and wakes up one morning to discover that it has completely disappeared. He journeys across the dry seabed to find out why, meeting all sorts of beleaguered ocean creatures along the way; from a plastic bag filled blue whale to a mermaid caught up in plastic fishing nets. Jack soon discovers why the ocean might want to disappear..
We will then depart in a convoy of Volvo's to a local coastline to conduct our very own beach clean. The day will be child-friendly to encourage the next generation to love our oceans and to learn what they can do to help.

Why are Donalds and Volvo involved?
Care for the world we live in is something that Volvo Cars has always been committed to – and that includes the oceans.
Our ambition is that from 2025, at least 25 per cent of the plastics used in every newly launched Volvo car will be made from recycled material. Environmental care is one of Volvo’s core values and we will continue to find new ways to bring this into our business. This car and our recycled plastics ambition are further examples of that commitment.
As part of our sustainability focus in 2017-18, we used the Volvo Ocean Race around the world to gather critical data on ocean health to contribute to scientific research and ocean health monitoring as part of a landmark Science Programme. This ground breaking programme has provided invaluable data on the health of our oceans, particularly the global extent of the problem of marine plastic pollution.
For Donalds, Volvo's global commitment to tackling plastics in the ocean is the perfect launch pad for us to play our role on a regional basis and to engage both our staff, customers and local residents to learn about this environmental issue and to understand what we can all do to help.
