Volvo V90 Reigns Supreme at Scottish Car of the Year Awards

The Volvo V90 has been named 2016 Scottish Car of the Year at the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers' Awards in Edinburgh. Volvo's new premium estate also won the Estate Car of the Year award.

The V90 was praised for its practicality, high-quality interior and stylish good looks. It's innovative technology, which includes the ground-breaking Sensus touch screen infotainment system also contributed to the V90 winning the coveted Car of the Year title.

The V90 is built on advanced technology, from the D5 diesel engine benefiting from PowerPulse, a system that uses compressed air to boost responsiveness at low revs, to Pilot Assist, the semi-autonomous drive technology fitted as standard which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking up to 80mph.

A host of advanced safety equipment comes as standard with the V90, including two world firsts: Large Animal Detection and Run-off Road Mitigation. Large Animal Detection helps to prevent collisions with animals such as deer, by scanning the area in front of the car and automatically applying brakes if you fail to react in time. Run-off Road Mitigation is designed to stop the car inadvertently leaving the road by applying the steering if the car gets too close to the edge of the carriageway.

Volvo Cars UK Wins Two Motor Trader Awards

Volvo Car UK walked away with two of Motor Trader’s most sought-after accolades at its annual industry awards evening last night (Wednesday, 13 July).

The brand’s iconic all-new XC90 was named New Car of the Year, while the coveted Carmaker of the Year Award was awarded to the marque after nomination by the Motor Trader judges.

The Volvo XC90 was recognised by the judges as one of the most significant new model launches of 2015, which enabled the brand to re-engage with its customers. The car replaced the outgoing XC90, which had retained its popularity over its 13-year lifespan, but the judges felt the new model meant Volvo was able to reassert its place in the premium SUV sector, as well as marking a major step in the brand’s transformation.

The vehicle received excellent reviews from the motoring press, with Motor Trader itself describing it as “an excellent all-rounder bristling with style, technology and attitude. If Audi, BMW and Land Rover thought they had the premium SUV market to themselves, then they’re in for a rude awakening.”

The judges highlighted the XC90’s world-renowned safety, comfort and practicality credentials, and how it had moved the game on in terms of connectivity and its range of powerful yet efficient engines.

“Volvo faced a tough job in delivering an all-new XC90 into the highly competitive premium SUV sector, and it succeeded with a car that has helped transform the fortunes of the brand and its dealers in the UK and across Europe,” said the judges. “The XC90 is a true game-changer for both Volvo and the sector, and a worthy winner of Motor Trader’s New Car of the Year. It also sets the agenda for Volvo as it begins its ambitious new product roll-out.”

Winning the Carmaker of the Year Award, whose list of winners stretch back to 2002, is a first for Volvo Car UK, reflecting how much the brand has reinvented itself and successfully continued to appeal to its loyal clientele while attracting new customers. The award recognises the manufacturer which has, in the opinion of the judges, excelled in producing new models, marketing them and building close relationships with its dealer network.

Jon Wakefield, Volvo Car UK’s acting managing director, who accepted both awards, commented: “It was a privilege to accept both awards on behalf of Volvo. The Motor Trader awards are hotly contested and we were up against some tough opposition. To win the two awards that manufacturers most want to display in their trophy cabinet is testament to Volvo’s commitment to being the premium carmaker of choice among motorists.”

The prestigious 2016 Motor Trader Industry Awards took place on 13 July at the Grosvenor House hotel, and highlighted best practice and the top achievers in the UK car retailing sector. More than 1,200 guests from the automotive industry attended the event, making it one of the biggest on the retail motor industry calendar.

Volvo XC90 Named Game-Changer at the Autocar Awards 2016

Autocar's Game-Changers are those cars that have done the most to move the car industry, or their makers, forwards in the past year – and the XC90 has certainly done that. Built on Volvo's all-new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, the XC90 was the first evidence of the Swedish brand's global transformation. Combining Volvo's world-renowned safety, comfort and practicality credentials, it also moves the game on in terms of connectivity and its range of powerful yet efficient Drive-E powertrains.

Commenting on the award, Autocar's editorial director, Jim Holder, said: "The XC90 has transformed the standing of Volvo in the most striking fashion, combining practicality, comfort and cutting-edge technology in a hugely desirable package."

That cutting-edge technology includes the nine-inch Sensus touch screen control system. This is no ordinary touch screen, however: not only does it include pinch, zoom and swipe functionality – unlike many rival systems – it even works when you're wearing gloves. It provides access to the internet and a range of cloud-based apps and internet radio stations, too.

The Drive-E powertrains also showcase the future of Volvo's engines. The XC90's four-cylinder, 2.0-litre units use sophisticated fuelling and boosting technologies to combine efficiency with power. The D5 diesel engine benefits from an innovative solution to increase responsiveness at low revs. Called PowerPulse, it uses compressed air to spool up the turbocharger when it would otherwise be inactive, which helps give the XC90 impressively strong performance from a standing start. The T8 Twin Engine petrol-electric hybrid, on the other hand, combines a total of 407 hp with CO2 emissions of just 49 g/km. It can also travel for up to 27 miles in zero-emission electric-only mode.

Naturally, safety is at the forefront of any Volvo, and the XC90 includes two world-first safety aids: automatic emergency braking at a junction, which will apply the brakes for you if you inadvertently turn into the path of an oncoming vehicle, and run-off road protection, which includes a collapsible section in the front seats to reduce the likelihood of spinal injuries if the car leaves the road.

Nick Connor, Managing Director of Volvo Car UK, said: "We're delighted that the XC90 has been recognised as such a transformative model by Autocar. We're immensely proud of the car and what it heralds for Volvo – both in terms of our new-found style and desirability, but also that it is the first in an entirely new product range due in the next few years. Volvo is on a roll at the moment, and this honour for the XC90 is yet more proof that our transformation is well on track."
