IntelliSafe - driver support and safety
IntelliSafe - driver support and safety
IntelliSafe is the Volvo Cars concept concerning car safety and it consists of a number of functions that can actively or passively assist you with your driving in different situations. For example, the functions can help you to maintain a certain time interval to the vehicle in front of you, prevent a collision by giving a warning and braking the car, or help with parking.
IntelliSafe - Support
IntelliSafe incorporates supporting functions that can help you to drive your car more safely. Below you can find information about the driver support functions Volvo offers.
The functions are briefly described below. For more detailed information and important warnings, etc., see the Owner's Manual for your car model.
Some of the car's functions are fitted as standard while others are options. This may vary depending on market, model year and car model.
Pilot Assist can help you to drive the car between the lane's side markings and maintain a constant speed, combined with maintaining a preset time interval to the vehicle ahead.
Pilot Assist can sometimes help you to drive your car between the lane markings.
Blind Spot Information
The Blind Spot Information function, BLIS, is designed to help you detect vehicles diagonally behind and to the side of your car in order to be able to give assistance in heavy traffic on roads with several lanes in the same direction.
Cross Traffic Alert
Cross Traffic Alert, CTA, can warn you about crossing traffic when you are reversing. CTA is a supplement to Blind Spot Information (BLIS).For the XC40 of model year 2018 onwards, CTA is equipped with the auto-brake function. See your Owner's Manual for more information.
Parking assistance can help you to park in tight spaces by indicating the distance to obstacles with acoustic signals combined with graphics on the centre display.
Park Assist Pilot
The Park Assist Pilot function (Park Assist Pilot, PAP) can help you in some cases to park in or leave a car park by assisting you with steering into or out of a parking space.
Park assist camera
The Park Assist Camera can help you when parking in tight spaces by indicating obstacles with a camera image and graphics in the centre display.
Road Sign Information
The Road Sign Information function (Road Sign Information, RSI) can help you to observe speed signs and certain prohibition signs as you pass them.
Electronic Stability Control
Electronic Stability Control (Electronic Stability Control, ESC) can help you to avoid skidding and improve the car's traction, and it consists of the following subfunctions:
- Stability function
Also known as Active Yaw Control
- Spin control and traction control system
- Engine Drag Control
- Trailer stability assist
Adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control (Adaptive Cruise Control, ACC) can help you to maintain a constant speed, combined with a preset time interval to the vehicle ahead.
A speed limiter (Speed Limiter, SL) can be regarded as a reverse cruise control - you regulate the speed using the accelerator pedal but the speed limiter helps you to avoid accidentally exceeding a preset speed.
Cruise control (Cruise Control, CC) can help you to maintain a constant speed, which can result in a more relaxed driving experience on motorways and long, straight roads in regular traffic flows.
Rear Collision Warning
Rear Collision Warning, RCW, is a system that can help you avoid being hit by a vehicle approaching from behind.
Driver Alert Control
Driver Alert Control, DAC, is a function designed to attract the driver's attention if he/she starts to drive less consistently, e.g. if he/she becomes distracted or starts to fall asleep.
Roll Stability Control
Only applies to XC40, XC60 and XC90 models.
Only applies to XC40, XC60 and XC90 models.
Roll Stability Control, RSC, is a stabiliser system that, in certain situations, can help to reduce the risk of overturning, for example, during sudden evasive manoeuvres or if the car skids.
Active main beam
Active main beam is a function that uses a camera sensor at the top edge of the windscreen that can detect the headlamp beams of oncoming traffic or the rear lights of vehicles in front, and then switches from main beam to dipped beam. The function can also take streetlights into account.
Tunnel detection means that the car can detect when it is driven into a tunnel and then shifts automatically from daytime running lights to dipped beam.
All-wheel drive (AWDAll Wheel Drive) means that the car is driving all four wheels at the same time, which can improve traction.
The functions described are supplementary aids - they cannot handle all situations in all conditions.
The driver always bears responsibility that the vehicle is driven safely and that applicable road traffic rules and regulations are followed.
IntelliSafe - Prevent
The Distance Warning function (Distance Alert)The function is only available in cars that can show information on the windscreen using a so-called Head-up-display. can warn you if you are not far enough away from the vehicle in front of youNot applicable to XC40..
Lane assistance, LKALane Keeping Aid, can assist you on motorways and similar major routes to reduce the risk of the car unintentionally leaving its own lane.
Collision avoidance assistance
The Collision Avoid. Assistance function can help the driver to reduce the risk of the car accidentally leaving its lane and/or colliding with another vehicle or obstacle by actively steering the car back into the lane and/or swerving.
The Collision Avoid. Assistance function consists of three subfunctions:
- Steering assist with run-off mitigation
- Steering assistance upon risk of head-on
- Steering assistance upon risk of rear-end collision
Option/accessory. Does not apply to the S60, V60 and XC40, see the manual for your car for more information on how collision avoidance assistance can be of assistance to you.
City Safety is a function that can prevent or mitigate a collision with pedestrians, cyclists, larger animals or vehicles. Visual, acoustic and brake pulse warnings are given in the event of a risk of collision to help you act in time. If the system assesses that you as the driver are not reacting sufficiently to the warning and the risk of a collision remains, brake support can be activated, which can reinforce braking action. If braking or an evasive manoeuvre has still not been started, City Safety can also activate auto-brake, which can automatically brake the car.
Your Volvo is equipped with several interacting functions whose purpose, in certain situations, is to protect driver and passengers in the event of an accident.
Amongst other things, your Volvo is equipped with a number of detectors that can react in the event of an accident and activate various functions, such as different types of airbag and the seatbelt tensioner. Depending on the specific accident situation, such as collisions at different angles, rollover or driving off the road, the functions can react in different ways in order to provide protection.
In addition, there are also purely mechanical functions such as Whiplash Protection System and Pedestrian Protection System. The car is also constructed so that a large part of the force of a collision is distributed to beams, pillars, floor, roof and other parts of the body.
Pedestrian Protection System
Pedestrian Protection System (PPS) is a function which, in certain frontal collisions, contributes to mitigating a pedestrian's impact with the car. The function works by means of detectors in the front of the car reacting in certain frontal collisions with a pedestrian, on which the rear section of the bonnet is raised.
Whiplash Protection System
Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) is a function that can protect against whiplash injuries. The function consists of energy absorbing backrest and seat cushion, as well as a specially designed head restraint in the front seats.
Your Volvo is equipped with airbags that can help protect the driver's and passenger's heads, necks, faces and chests, as well as knees and legs. The car is also equipped with inflatable curtains for driver and passengers. The inflatable curtain is mounted along both sides of the headlining and helps protect the driver and outer seat passengers of the car. The side airbags are fitted in the outer backrest frames of the front seats and can help to protect the driver and passenger in the front seat. The side airbags on the driver and passenger seats can protect the chest and hips in the event of a collision.
The car is equipped with standard seatbelt tensioners and electric seatbelt tensioners that can tension the seatbelts in critical situations and collisions.
Using Volvo's child safety equipment allows a child to travel safely in the car. In addition, the child safety equipment fits in well and is simple to use.
Children of all ages and sizes must always sit correctly secured in the car. Never allow a child to sit on the knee of a passenger.
Volvo recommends that children travel in rear-facing child seats until as late an age as possible, at least until 3-4 years of age, and then in front-facing booster cushions/child seats until the child is 140 cm tall.
Legal provisions about the type of child seat that must be used for children of different ages and heights vary from country to country. Check what does apply.
In the event of questions when fitting child safety products, contact the manufacturer for clearer instructions.
