Volvo On Call app: Operating remote start of the car

Remote start of the car (ERS – Engine Remote Start) allows you to start your car remotely via the Volvo On Call app to cool down or warm up your car before you use it.

The following information only applies to the V70, XC70 and S80 of model year 2015 and later, as well as the S60 and V60, XC60 of model year 2015 to 2018 equipped with Volvo On CallNot available for the XC60 D4 and D4 with automatic gearbox of model year 2017 and earlier.

Using remote start of the car ERS in the Volvo On Call app

ERS is not available for cars with all-wheel drive. Availability may vary depending on market and the car's equipment.

Remote start of the car (ERS) also activates functions such as seat heating, heated rearview and door mirrors and rear window.

The ERS function can cool or heat your Volvo to 22 °C on the basis of automatic settings.

You can use the Engine Remote Start (ERS) function even if you have a parking heater (Volvo On Call app: Remote heater start). In cold weather, it is a good idea to use the parking heater to heat up your car.

Things to bear in mind when using remote start of the car (ERS)

It is important to make sure that it is safe, according to local environmental regulations and laws, to start ERS. Ensure the following requirements are met before you start the car using the ERS function in the Volvo On Call app:

  • The car is locked and the keys have been taken out of the car
  • The bonnet is locked
  • The car is parked and the gearbox is set to park position
  • The engine is not running
  • The car is under supervision
  • There are no people or animals in or around the car
  • The car is not parked in an enclosed space/area with inadequate ventilation - the exhaust gases can cause serious injury to both people and animals.
  • There is no risk to anyone who is in direct contact with the car (e.g. during a service in a workshop or children playing near the car).
  • Use of the function at the set time (e.g. with regard to sound level and idling) is authorised in accordance with the law.

The system will also check the following before starting the engine:

  • Engine status is OK (no critical fault codes)
  • Battery level OK
  • Sufficient fuel level (more than 8 litres (2.11 US gallons)).

You will also find user recommendations in the Volvo On Call app.

If you have started the car remotely via your Volvo On Call app, it is not possible to drive the car for safety reasons. ERS will remain active until you depress the brake pedal and turn the start knobOn the XC40, ERS will be active until you depress the brake pedal and press the start button.. Note that even if the car was started remotely using ERS, you will still have to carry out these steps before you can drive off in your car.
