    November 29 – January 6

    A Gothenburg Christmas

    Though it may be a cold Winter in Sweden, Christmas in Gothenburg is charmingly warm.  
    Experience a Scandinavian Christmas. Surround yourself with Jumlys, Swedish Christmas coziness. Travel around the city and enjoy Christmas concerts, markets, and exhibits. Do your Christmas shopping or a enjoy a night under one million sparkling Christmas lights at Liseberg Amusement Park.

    Gothenburg International Film Festival

    Indulge in global awareness of global warming. With temperatures and sea levels rising, the 2019 Göteborg Film Festival focuses on the Apocalypse. In Focus: Göteborg Film Festival will look deeper at how filmmakers perceive and attempt to portray issues involving the ethics, emotions, and politics of climate change.

    April 3 – 7

    Gothenburg Horse Show

    Get in on the action at Scandinavium, an indoor arena located in Gothenburg. Experience one of the best annual indoor horse shows in the world. Buy tickets for the Gothenburg Horse Show and celebrate with the crowds; feel like a part of the thrilling sport.

    International Science Festival, Gothenburg

    With the International Science Festival’s 2019 Theme being Astonish Thought, visit one of Europe’s leading popular science events and learn more about intelligence, abstract thought, and what makes humans unique. Participate in the investigation of the human thought process and the significance and role of technology in society’s development and evolution.

    Beer & Whiskey Fair

    Relax and enjoy a day of eating and drinking. With numerous exhibitors, this event includes a little bit of everything with a variety of microbreweries, breweries, cheese, meat, chocolate, whiskey distilleries, master brewer, and more.

    Dancing cranes at Lake Hornborga

    Don’t miss out on the chance to see flocks of cranes gather and dance at the southern end of Hornborgasjön. While the peak of the crane season is often times in the beginning of April, spend the day with a beautiful view and watch the birds dance, leap, and circle around.

    Liseberg

    Join in on the excitement at Liseberg, one of the most visited amusements parks in Scandinavia. Located in Gothenburg, Sweden, the park that opened in 1923 attracts nearly three million visitors annually. Experience history, culture, and unforgettable roller coasters and rides.

    August 23 – 25

    Open Yard, on Orust

    Experience Scandinavia’s largest sail boat show, the 26th Annual Open Yard boat show held on Orust, Sweden’s third largest island. Watch the races, explore both new and premium used boat exhibits, or even watch as yachts are being built.

    Hova Medieval Week

    Don’t miss the 30th Anniversary of the Hova Medieval Week. With daily activities and an enticing program, experience Riddarbyn’s medieval market, including various sales, music, food and other festivities.

    July 11 – 14

    Åmåls Blues Fest

    Enjoy a weekend of music at the 28th Annual Åmåls Blues Fest. With an extensive lineup of various blues musicians, you don’t want to miss out on Sweden’s #1 International Blues Event. The 3-day festival will feature numerous, electric performances.

    July 14 – 20

    Gothia Cup

    With around 1,700 teams coming together from 80 nations, experience the world’s largest, most international youth football (soccer) tournament. The Gothia Cup holds over 4,000 games across 110 fields. With a variety of races and religions, join together in excitement and celebration with the common denominator: football.

    August 9 – 11

    Way Out West

    Way Out West is a three-day music festival you do not want to miss. Held in Gothenburg, come see some of your favorite artists perform, hosting a variety of genres including rock, electronic, and hop-hop genres. With previous artists like Kendrick Lamar, Mura Masa, Iggy Pop, Brockhampton, Artic Monkeys and more, you are bound to have a weekend you won’t forget. 

    August 10

    Dalsland Kanotmaraton +

    Participate in the Dalsland Kanotmaraton + this August. This 55-kilometer canoeing competition makes up the biggest part of the day, though there is also an elite field of world-class. The competition is run with either one-man jersey, two-man jersey, or Canadian. Join in or cheer on a loved one from the sidelines at the Dalsland Canoe Marathon.

    (June – September

    IcebugXperience

    With numerous Icebug Xperiences register to participate in one of the events. Join the Mountain Trail, June 28 – 30, the West Coast Trail from August 1 – September 1, or one of the year-round Forest Femmes. If you’re a true athlete try out the IX Ultra on August 31, running a 50-mile coastal trail along Western Sweden.

    Midsummer

    Gather together with the Swedes in the celebration of Midsummer. Significant in Swedish culture, the public holiday is a time of food, flavored schnapps, singing, and dancing. With a variety of Swedish traditions, you don’t want to miss out of Sweden’s lightest Midsummer Night of the year.

    September

    Island of Light, Smögen

    Don’t miss the Island of Light, a unique festival for art, science, life and light. With numerous events available, you can experience the festival from the land or the sea. Book a guided boat tour or join the walk through the festival starting at Smögen Square. In a beautiful fishing village, enjoy first class food, light art installations, talks, and workshops all surrounded by the sea.

    Lights in Alingsås

    Bring your family, friends, or visit on your own and take a walk through the Lights in Alingsås. Numerous companies and students come together to arrange a full-scale installation in just six days. Stroll along or take a guided tour throughout the Lights in Alingsås and enjoy the beautiful and bright light installations.

    Beginning of November

    All In Beer Fest

    Join in on the fun at the All In Beer Fest, a 2-day event held at the Eriksbergshallen in Gothenburg, Sweden. Help promote breweries and beer makers across the globe while enjoying a taste of Sweden.

    Transportation

    Public transportation

    All public transportation within Gothenburg is operated by the company västtrafikm. Västtrakif operates all the bus, trams and ferries which are easily accessible. Load tickets onto a västtrafik travel card or use the västtrafik app to plan and book transportation.

    Bicycling

    One of the most immersive ways to travel around Gothenburg is bicycling. With the bike rental system Styr & Stall, there are over 50 bike rental stations throughout Gothenburg, where you can pick up and leave a bike almost anywhere.

    Taxi

    Traveling by taxi in Sweden is usually the most expensive option, as the rates are not fixed and vary depending on operator. Either hail a taxi on the street, call ahead and book a taxi, or wait at any designated taxi stop, located all over the city. To ensure an approved taxi, look for taxis carrying yellow number plates.

    Gunnebo House (Gunnebo Slott och Trädgårdar)

    Visit the Gunnebo House in Mölndal, where you can go on a guided tour of the 18th century stately home. Watch the summer theater or sit at the coffee house and restaurant. Meals, coffee, and cakes are made using mainly produce from their organic garden. 

    Thörnströms Kök

    Enjoy a night of fine dining at Thörnströms Kök, where life is good, but the food is better. Have a taste of Sweden with various Swedish and other European flavors found on the seasonal menu. Experience a night of fantastic food, wine and service in a beautiful setting in Sweden.   
     

    Sjöbaren Fish Seafood

    Located in Haga, Gothenburg, enjoy a night of seafood at a cozy and casual restaurant. At Sjöbaren Fish Seafood there are options for everyone. From seafood to soups, including vegetarian and gluten free options, have a relaxing Scandiavian meal.

    Brogyllen

    Sit and eat while enjoying a view of the canal and the Göthenburg City Museum. The classic bakery is the perfect place for a scenic and delicious lunch. Try traditional Swedish fika; get a sandwich, or simply enjoy a coffee and cake.

    Blackbird

    Have dinner and a drink at Blackbird, a vegan bar and restaurant located in Majorna. With fresh dishes combining both international and Swedish flavors, the food is completely vegan. Enjoy a meal in the restaurant, order a drink and bite to eat from the bar menu, or even just a dessert and coffee.
     

    Conditori Nordpolen

    Don’t miss out on visiting Conditori Nordpolen, Sweden’s best bakery, according to the White Guide Café. This award-winning bakery in Vara offers freshly baked cakes and pastries from a friendly face. Either cozy up and eat inside or enjoy the fresh air outside in the garden.

    Löfwings Ateljé & Krog

    With a combination of both cuisine and culture, Löfwings Ateljé & Krog is an experience you will want to visit. Enjoy Göran Löfwing’s paintings throughout the home or walk outside and take in the beautiful scenery in Broddetorp. Sit down and eat at where home-made food with quality ingredients is served.

    OGBG Bar & Restaurang

    OGBG is a modern bistro and bar that offers Asian influenced food made with Scandinavian ingredients. The kitchen’s dishes and drinks are inspired by Vietnam, Thailand and China street art. With cool drinks and a view of the harbor, OGBG is the perfect night out.

    Gothenburg Opera Wine Tasting

    Enjoy a night at the Göthenburg Opera, and then finish the night off with a wine tasting from the Gothenburg Opera’s sommelier, Ousainou Mbye. Be guided through a selection of wines. Participate in grape tasting, cheese and wine pairings, food and wine pairings, and end with a champagne tasting. 

    Juan Font Wine Bar

    Have a cozy night at Juan Font Wine Bar and order Spanish and French wines paired with various cold cuts and cheeses. The stylish wine bar is the place to go after a long day to wind down. Enjoy a cheese and chark tray, raw beef, delicatessen pizza or oysters along with a perfect wine pairing.

    Poppels

    Make a trip out of visiting Poppels Brewery in Jonsered, the old textile district of Vastra Götaland County in Sweden. With state-of-the-art technology, but a respect for the history of brewing, enjoy a lager, IPA, stout or your favorite type of beer. 

    Brewers Beer Bar

    Located in the heart of Gothenburg, whether you’re hungry or thirsty, Brewers Beet Bar is the place to be. With an ever changing tap selection, as well as sourdough pizzas, kababs, and vegan options, there is something for everyone at Brewers Beer Bar.

    Kommersen Loppmarknad

    Kommersen Loppmarknad, the weekend Kommersen flea market has been around since 2000 and is extremely well-known. Within the massive building, grab a coffee and shop around from a wide variety of original and second-hand items for an amazing bargain.

    Bengans Skivbutik

    If you’re a music lover, stopping by Bengans Skivbutik is a must. The iconic record store offers both new and used records. Shop around for records and stop and sit at the stores popular café and grab a cup of coffee.    

    Efva Attling

    Take home a piece of Sweden with Swedish designer Efva Attling’s jewelry or accessories. With designs made with silver, gold and stones, find what fits you best with collections including engagement rings, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more.

    Beyond Retro

    Check out Beyond Retro, the fashionable second-hand and vintage clothing shop in the city center. With unique pieces and fair prices, the store has something for everyone. Be greeted by a great staff and leave with something you love.  

    Emmaus Björkå

    Located on the corner of Linnégatan and Fjärde Långgatan, Emmaus Björkå is a second-hand and vintage store featuring clothes and accessories with a retro fashion and style. Shop for men, women, or children while your purchase supports charity projects in Palestine and West Sahara.

    Indoor Excursions

    The Natural History Museum

    Tour the Gothenburg Natural History Museum and view collections of animals from all over the world. See the world’s only mounted blue whale, as well as other animals such as African elephants, birds, fish and more. Stop and see various presentations of the land and sea and learn more about various environmental issues occurring around the globe.

    Volvo Museum

    Learn more about the history behind Volvo. Visit the Volvo Museum Right at the heart of Arendal industrial park, right outside of Gothenburg, located right next to the sea. Explore the legacy of Volvo’s car, buses and commercial cars, as well as the Volvo Ocean Race exhibit.

    Aeroseum

    30 meters below the rock surface, visit the Aeroseum located in a 1950s subterranean hangar. This aviation museum offers hands-on experience with varieties of aviation inside a declassified Swedish Air Force bunker, which was once one a top-secret defense facility during the Cold War.

    Universeum

    Universeum is Scandinavia’s largest science center, and it is located in the heart of Gothenburg. If you love science, journey through seven floors of huge aquariums, a tropical rainforest or have hands-on experience in the Chemistry Lab. Take a guided tour, enjoy lunch, dinner or coffee, and explore the numerous exhibits. 

    Hagabadet

    If you are looking to relax, Hagabadet is a must. A true Gothenburg icon, established in 1876, the center offers spa treatments, massages, fitness and yoga classes. Located in a historical setting, enjoy a wide variety of amenities, including the restaurant Lemon & Live, serving locally sourced, organic food.

    VR World

    Explore new worlds through virtual reality at VR World in Gothenburg. Visit Gothenburg’s first ever VR-arcade and enjoy various games and experiences, as well as other services in VR. 

    Gothenburg Museum of Art

    Take a walk around the Gothenburg Museum of Art. View art collections from the 15th century on, including works from artists such as Monet, Rembrandt, Picasso Chagall and more with three starts in the Michelin Green Guide. The museum offers family activities, workshops, guided tours, a shop, and a café.

    Nordic Watercolour Museum

    Visit the Nordic Watercolour Museum, located right on the archipelago lake Tjorn. The museum exhibits pieces from Salvador Dali, Bill Viola and Swedish artists like Elsa Beskow and Anders Zorn. Take a tour and be inspired by art and nature.

    Point65 (Kayaking Center)

    Centrally located in Lilla Bommen harbor, rent a kayak, take a class, or go on a guided tour. Travel around Sweden by kayak and experience the scenery from a different point of view. Paddle to lunch, or journey through the city canals.
