It's never too late to start helping the environment
Offsetting your Volvo's carbon footprint is the perfect way to start
Fighting Global Warming one Spekboom at a time
Initially Greenforblue gave customers the opportunity to reduce their Volvo's carbon footprint by buying a set of trees to be planted by Sappi. But now Greenforblue has evolved – with every new Volvo, we give you a spekboom tree to plant where you choose.
Like everything we do at Volvo, Greenforblue is Designed Around You.
Why the Spekboom?
The Spekboom is an excellent 'carbon sponge' as it absorbs more free carbon from the atmosphere than almost any other plant and does so very efficiently.
• Absorbs 20 kg/m2 of carbon per year • Edible – feeds animals
• Excels in arid or semi-arid conditions • Shades the soil from harmful sun
• Prevents soil erosion • Enriches soil (benefits plants and animals in the area)
• Improved water-holding
Spekboom sites are very good at rehabilitating over-utilised natural habitats to their formerly productive state. At the same time these sites act as carbon sinks where carbon can be collected and used where it belongs.
Reasons to buy and plant more trees
Trees improve air quality by producing oxygen and trapping dust, pollen and other pollutants. They also store carbon, offsetting harmful byproducts of fossil-fuel burning. Trees also moderate the effects of sun and wind and increase property value.
Trees generate jobs and contribute raw materials for buildings, newspapers, books, etc. They are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. They provide shelter and food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels and bugs.
Planted in the right places around buildings, trees can significantly reduce air-conditioning costs. This means less Freon, an inflammable and odorless chemical emitted from air conditioners. It is considered to have damaging effects to the ozone layer.
How many trees offset your carbon footprint?
This slide shows how many trees are needed to offset your Volvo’s carbon footprint for 5 years or 100 000 km.

With our new technologies you can get the same power from a four-cylinder engine as from a six or even an eight-cylinder engine, all the time while still using less fuel. Your running costs will be lower and your engine will emit fewer harmful exhaust emissions. The ECO+ mode improves your fuel economy by optimising gearshifts, engine control and throttle response.
How can you make a small, light engine that is as powerful as a big one? By making it smarter. We have developed the world first intelligent diesel fuel injection technology called i-ART. It is one of the reasons even our small engines are exceptionally powerful. We have attached intelligent sensors to our new i-ART engines so that fuel usage is automatically adjusted, giving you more power with less fuel consumption.
And with our eight-speed gearbox your Volvo will always be in the right gear for optimal performance and a great driving experience.

The Volvo V40, has considerably low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
All engine and transmission variants come standard with Volvo’s Start-Stop technology, as well as energy recovery systems such as Regenerative Charging, which charges the battery when it’s most economical, such as when braking.
After all, environmentally-aware mobility is central to our philosophy of intelligent thoughtful luxury.
