It's never too late to start helping the environment

Offsetting your Volvo's carbon footprint is the perfect way to start

Fighting Global Warming one Spekboom at a time

Eco-friendly mobility is a Volvo imperative. By driving, we contribute to global warming but we can still reduce our impact. The average tree has the power to absorb as much as 18 kg of CO2 in a year and Volvo Car South Africa is harnessing this power, with the Greenforblue project.

Initially Greenforblue gave customers the opportunity to reduce their Volvo's carbon footprint by buying a set of trees to be planted by Sappi. But now Greenforblue has evolved – with every new Volvo, we give you a spekboom tree to plant where you choose.

Like everything we do at Volvo, Greenforblue is Designed Around You.

Why the Spekboom?

The Spekboom is an excellent 'carbon sponge' as it absorbs more free carbon from the atmosphere than almost any other plant and does so very efficiently.

Spekboom Advantages:

• Absorbs 20 kg/m2 of carbon per year   • Edible – feeds animals

• Excels in arid or semi-arid conditions  • Shades the soil from harmful sun

• Prevents soil erosion  • Enriches soil (benefits plants and animals in the area)

• Improved water-holding

Spekboom sites are very good at rehabilitating over-utilised natural habitats to their formerly productive state. At the same time these sites act as carbon sinks where carbon can be collected and used where it belongs.

Reasons to buy and plant more trees

Trees improve air quality by producing oxygen and trapping dust, pollen and other pollutants. They also store carbon, offsetting harmful byproducts of fossil-fuel burning. Trees also moderate the effects of sun and wind and increase property value.

Trees generate jobs and contribute raw materials for buildings, newspapers, books, etc. They are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. They provide shelter and food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels and bugs.

Planted in the right places around buildings, trees can significantly reduce air-conditioning costs. This means less Freon, an inflammable and odorless chemical emitted from air conditioners. It is considered to have damaging effects to the ozone layer.

How many trees offset your carbon footprint?

By planting enough trees to offset your Volvo’s CO2 emissions, you can drive with a clear conscience, knowing that you’ve done your bit for the environment.

This slide shows how many trees are needed to offset your Volvo’s carbon footprint for 5 years or 100 000 km.

Our Promise

As far back as in the 70s, Volvo acknowledged the environmental downside of cars. Since then, we haven't stopped developing and innovating to reduce the environmental impact of our cars, from product development and manufacturing, right through to driving and recycling.

That's why we support the development of climate neutral electricity production, and why Volvo Cars manufacturing units in Europe run on green electricity – either hydro or wind power. What's more, all new Volvo cars are designed to be 85%* recyclable, and for 95% recoverability.
