Charging your car with the Volvo wallbox
You can start and stop each wallbox charging session in the Volvo Cars app.
Starting charging
Avoid plugging the charging cable in when there is risk of thunderstorms or lightning strikes.Important
Make sure the car is in park (P).
1. Open the charging lid on your car by lightly pressing on its rearmost end.
2. Remove any protective covers from the charging port and cable connector.
3. Plug the wallbox charging cable to the car.
> When the cable is fully inserted it locks into place.
4. In the Volvo Cars app, go to the profile tab and select Wallbox > Charge now.
> Charging starts within a few seconds and once started, the charging input socket or charging port¹ light pulsates green.
Stopping charging
Always stop the charging session before attempting to unplug the charging cable from the car. If you don't, you may cause damage to the cable or the system.Important
1. In the Volvo Cars app press the profile tab and select Wallbox > Stop charging, or:
C40, EC40, EX40, EX90, XC40 Recharge Pure Electric: Press the release button next to the charging input socket or charging port².
EX30: Unlock your car.
When you unlock your car, charging stops and the charging cable unlocks for around 90 seconds. If you do not remove the cable within this time, it re-locks and charging resumes.Note
2. Unplug the charging cable from the car.
3. Reattach any protective covers to the charging port and cable connector.
4. Close the charging lid.
Charging with an RFID tag

If you're a guest user and are using an RFID tag to charge your car, you'll need to be granted access by the wallbox owner before you begin charging. To do this, simply tap your RFID on the wallbox, a notification will be sent to the wallbox owner for them to approve the charging session.
LED colours on the wallbox
| Signals | Description |
|---|---|
| White, solid | Waiting mode³ - charging was stopped and the wallbox is waiting for charging to start. |
| White, pulsating | Charging is ready and waiting to be started with an RFID. |
| Green, solid | Charging is complete. |
| Blue, solid | Charging in progress. OR Charging paused. OR Car battery is discharging⁴. |
| Orange, pulsating | Software update in progress. |
| Red, solid | A fault has arisen. Check the charging cable's connection to the car’s charging input socket and power source. Then restart charging in the following steps: 1. Unplug the charging cable from the charging input socket. 2. Wait for a short time. 3. Plug the charging cable into the charging input socket again. 4. If charging doesn't begin try restarting your wallbox. 5. If the problem persists – contact your Volvo dealer. |
