Updating your car's software

Update your car's software to receive new features and improvements without having to visit a workshop.

The software update can be downloaded over the air (OTA), when you are connected to the internet. You can choose to start the installation immediately or at a later time.

This article is applicable to models with Google built-in.

Please note that software updates can't be downloaded over the air in Oman.

Note

Software updates are free as long as you update your car on a regular basis. If you don't, you may need to visit a workshop to be able to get the updates over the air again. A workshop assisted software update may incur a fee.

Certain software releases can only be installed by workshops. If this applies to your car you'll be notified.

Updating your car's software includes two steps:

Note

The text in the centre display and the instructions on how to download and install software updates can vary depending on car model, model year and region.

Downloading software updates

Each car has a unique configuration and not all cars are updated at the same time with the same software. You only receive a download notification if it is applicable to your car.

An internet connection provided by the car's built-in SIM card is required when downloading software updates. Downloading via personal SIM or Wi-Fi is currently not supported.

You may have to enable automatic software updates in your car's settings to download updates.

Installing a new software version

When the software has downloaded, you'll receive a notification in the car's centre display and via the Volvo Cars mobile app, along with instructions on how to proceed with installing the new software. An internet connection is not required for this.

You can install the software in two ways:

Prerequisites for installing software:
  • For fully electric cars, the high-voltage battery level must be at least 40%.
  • For plug-in hybrids, software installation is not available during charging. However, if the car is fully charged, with the charging cable still attached to the car, software installation can proceed.
  • The car needs to be locked.

It is not possible to access or drive your car during the installation. It's a good idea to install the update overnight as it can take up to 90 minutes to complete.

Important

  • Accessing the car during the installation process risks interrupting or terminating the installation. This may cause problems with the car's functions.
  • If you urgently need to access your car, you will need to use the key blade. This is because the key fob's ranged function is disabled during the installation. Read more about opening the car with a key blade in the user manual.

Installing software via the Volvo Cars app on your phone

You can choose to start the installation immediately or schedule it to a later time via the push notification on your phone. You can also open the app, press the car tab and go to Car softwareSoftware update.

Installing software via the car's centre display

You can choose to start the installation immediately or schedule it to a later time. If you choose to postpone the installation, you can easily find the notification again by swiping down from the top of the display. Alternatively you can also install software via system settings.

A notification is shown in the centre display and the Volvo Cars app when the installation has been completed.

Note

  • If the installation wasn't successful, contact a Volvo dealer.
  • If you experience any issues with the software installation or with the car in any other way, contact Volvo Cars customer service (via phone or the Volvo Cars app) or your Volvo workshop.
  • When the software update is complete, your car may appear as offline in the Volvo Cars app. The car will reconnect to the app the next time your car is driven.

Finding your car's current software version

You can see the currently installed software version in the centre display.

Problems with updating software
