We delivered more in 2025: longer range, faster charging and smarter cars

As the year comes to an end and the holiday season approaches, here’s a look back at what 2025 was like at Volvo Cars.

Electrification

This was a year of car launches – in fact, we had three of them.

In March, we launched the all-new, fully electric Volvo ES90, blending refined sedan elegance with fastback adaptability and SUV-like space and higher ground clearance. It’s powered by 800-volt technology, offering a driving range of up to 700 kilometres and charging up to 300 kilometres in just 10 minutes.

Two other new cars joined the lineup this year: the XC70 long-range plug-in hybrid, unveiled in August and first available in the Chinese market, and the EX30 Cross Country, revealed at a remote winter cabin in northern Sweden back in February.

The new XC70, designed to meet growing demand for longer-range plug-in hybrids, delivers an all-electric driving range of over 200 kilometres – the longest of any Volvo plug-in hybrid to date. It’s a perfect choice for families looking for a more comfortable and relaxed lifestyle without having to compromise on performance or capability.

The EX30 Cross Country takes the successful recipe of the EX30 and adds rugged ingredients for life beyond the city. It’s fully electric, with a range of up to 427 kilometres and can be charged from 10-80 per cent in as little as 26 minutes. Raised ground clearance, larger wheels and all-wheel drive make it ready for rough terrain and slippery conditions.

Refreshing our icons
We didn’t just launch new models – we refreshed the lineup too.

It’s been an eventful year for the XC60: in February, we announced a major refresh for the upcoming model year, bringing updates to design, comfort and user experience, along with a faster, more responsive infotainment system.

The XC60 has been our global bestseller for years, and in June, it became our best-selling car of all time, surpassing the iconic 240 with more than 2.7 million units sold. And just a month later, we confirmed that we will add our mid-size SUV to the production line at our US car plant, with a scheduled start in late 2026, catering to the big XC60 demand in the US.

We revealed the 2026 EX90, featuring upgraded hardware and software. With a new 800-volt electric system, charging is faster than ever, and a core computer upgrade brings enhanced features within safety, collision avoidance and driver support. Existing 2025 EX90 owners aren’t left out: they’ll get a one-time free core computer upgrade via a scheduled workshop visit.

In other EX90 news, the family SUV earned the maximum five-star rating in the most recent round of Euro NCAP safety testing, placing it among the highest-performing cars this year.

And for audiophiles, June saw the debut of Abbey Road Studios Mode, a sound technology designed to capture the essence of the iconic recording studio’s unique environment. It came free of charge via an over-the-air update to all Volvo EX90 cars fitted with the optional Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity Audio system.

Last, but not least: in April, we unveiled the new S90, and made it available as a plug-in hybrid, which offers up to 80 kilometres of electric range, and as a mild hybrid.

Trophies, awards and innovation
We kept adding to the trophy cabinet in 2025. The all-electric Volvo EX90 was named World Luxury Car, praised for its comfortable and refined interior, advanced safety tech and distinctive Scandinavian design.

We also received the inaugural Sandy Myhre Award from Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year. With this award, the organisation wants to highlight car makers’ commitment to women in areas such as workplace inclusion, product design and advertising campaigns.

Innovation in safety earned us a spot on TIME’s Best Inventions list, for the second year running (in 2024, our driver understanding system was included). This year’s honour goes to our upcoming multi-adaptive safety belt, debuting in the soon-to-be-revealed fully electric EX60.

The new multi-adaptive safety belt is designed to adapt to traffic variations and the person wearing it. Using real-time data from the car’s advanced sensors, the belt can customise protection by adjusting to the current situation and the unique personal profile of drivers and front seat passengers, such as their height, weight, body shape and seating position.

Looking forward: the new EX60
So what’s in store for the first months of 2026?

Starting in February, we’re offering one year of complimentary fossil-free home charging for customers in Sweden who buy or lease a fully electric Volvo. The plan is to use insights from this launch to lay the foundation for a broader rollout.

But before that, we’re gearing up for what will (most certainly) be the biggest highlight of our year: the reveal of the new Volvo EX60. It will have a longer electric range than any Volvo car before it, and it’s our first fully electric car in the premium mid-size SUV segment – a category where we’re already a leader.

So mark your calendars: on 21 January 2026, we will reveal the new Volvo EX60 in a livestreamed event from Stockholm, Sweden.

A big thank you to all our fans and friends for your incredible support this year, and warm holiday wishes from all of us at Volvo Cars.
