Connecting an RFID tag to your wallbox

Using a Radio frequency ID (RFID) tag or card is a simple way to allow other users, such as guests, to charge their car with your wallbox.

Note

Radio frequency ID tags (RFID) are not supplied with the Volvo wallbox. However, you'll still be able to connect any RFID tag or card for use with your wallbox.

If you have your wallbox set to Unrestricted it will be open for anyone to charge their car. If it’s set to Restricted, you’ll need to set up an RFID tag or card to allow others to charge their car.

To use an RFID for charging, you first need to connect it to your wallbox in the Volvo Cars app or locally through the wallbox navigation. For this to work the Volvo wallbox needs to have an internet connection. Once connected, tap the tag or card on the RFID sensor on the wallbox to authorise and start charging.

Tip

Check that the RFID you intend to use is compatible with the Volvo wallbox before trying to connect it.

Setting up an RFID tag or card

Your tag or card contains an internal chip which needs to be connected to the wallbox for it to work. Here are the different ways to do it and the steps to get you set up.

In the Volvo Cars app:

  1. Go to Wallbox > Access > Add a new tag > and follow the instructions.

Once set up, your RFID is ready to use.

You can see and manage all of your RFID’s under Wallbox users > Charging tags.

Using your wallbox:

1. In the wallbox navigation, select Vehicle management > Approved list.

> The Local approved list screen is displayed.

2. Select Add RFID chip.

> The Set up RFID chip screen is displayed.

3. Hold your RFID tag or card to the RFID sensor on the front panel of the Volvo wallbox and select Read RFID chip.

> When the RFID chip is detected, its Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) is shown in the Set up RFID chip screen. The wallbox will make a sound to show the RFID is connected.

If you don’t hear a sound, it means that the connection has failed and you’ll need to try again.

4. Hold the RFID chip to the sensor again.

5. Enter a name in the Name of RFID chip field and select Save.

> The RFID chip will be displayed on the Local approved list screen.

Removing an RFID in the Volvo Cars app

  1. In the Volvo Cars app, go to the profile tab and select Wallbox > Manage access.
  2. Under Access tags, press Remove next to the RFID you want to remove and follow the instructions.

> The tag has been removed from your profile.
