At home, at work, at your gym or at your favourite supermarket. Get ready to revolutionise the way you drive and own a car. With significant advances in electric charging technology, switching from petrol-powered cars to electric cars has never been easier.
It’s easy to create charging routines that reflect your lifestyle and circumstances, regardless of where the day or night takes you and however, you live. At home, most people plug their cars in overnight during off-peak hours to take advantage of lower electricity rates and wake up with a fully charged battery each morning. And with the Volvo Cars app, you’ll easily find charging points near you if you need to top up your battery during the day.
The cost of charging an electric car is, for many, a smarter long-term choice than alternative fuels such as petrol and diesel.

Our tool can help you calculate approximate charging costs for an electric Volvo car. Just use the sliders to add your yearly mileage and household energy costs per unit.
* The charging cost is an estimate based on tests and calculations by Volvo Cars for the XC40 Recharge Twin and XC60 Recharge. Energy consumptions depends on many factors such as driving conditions, driving style, climate etc. It is not possible to guarantee an exact figure.
How long does it take to charge an electric car?
Charging times for a fully electric or plug-in hybrid Volvo car can vary depending on various factors such as outdoor temperatures, the charging method used and the size of the car’s battery. Make sure to optimise your electric Volvo car’s efficiency with battery preconditioning. This feature brings the battery to the perfect temperature before charging, reducing charging times and getting you back on the road faster.

Charging times will vary and are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition.
To make the most of the battery life in a pure electric car, we recommend AC charging the battery up to 90% capacity for typical daily driving and preferably not letting the charge fall below 20%.
Regularly charging the battery to 100% is a great way to make the most of the electric range on plug-in hybrid. With a fuel engine also available, you can allow charge to get low without worry.
Hassle-free charging on the road.
You’ll have access to numerous public charging stations when driving an electric Volvo car. This means you can enjoy your electric driving experience without worrying about running out of charge. And by using the Volvo Cars app, you can receive charging reminders and get guided navigation to the nearest charging station. These charging stations allow you to quickly and easily top up your battery while on the go – perfect for those long road trips or days when you need more power than what one full charge can provide.
The EX90 is compatible with Plug & Charge technology. This gives you the valuable benefit of being able to charge your car at any public charging station supporting this feature. All you have to do is connect your EX90’s charging cable to the charging point, and the charging process will begin automatically. Additionally, this technology takes care of payment, so you won't have to worry about paying for the service separately.
Here’s what you need to know to confidently go electric and find the right Volvo electric car for you.
Fully electric cars
Our fully electric cars offer emissions-free driving without compromising range and power.
Fully electric carsPlug-in hybrid cars use a lithium-ion battery, similar to, but smaller than, those used in fully electric cars.
Depending on the model, a Volvo plug-in hybrid car can manage most of your daily driving in a fully electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions. If you can coordinate charging opportunities at work or other destinations, you can likely make most of your shorter trips entirely electric.
Our plug-in hybrids come with a charging cable which you can use to connect to household power for lightweight charging duty. The car can also be connected to the charging cables present at AC charging points and charging stations. For AC charging points without charging cables, you can complement them with a separate cable for that purpose.
