About us - our heritage

A new beginning for Volvo Cars
As the Second World War neared its end, Volvo Cars began planning for the future. In 1944, the PV444 was born – a smaller, more accessible car designed for a changing world. When production started in 1947, it introduced a new direction for Volvo Cars – one that focused on practicality, reliability, and people. Built during a time of limited resources, the PV444 offered simplicity without compromise and became the starting point for many values that still define Volvo Cars today.

Designed for people
Although the PV444 was nicknamed “The Little Volvo” because of its compact exterior, its interior was surprisingly spacious. It was even marketed as roomy enough to fit “four fully grown Swedes with their hats still on”. The PV444 also brought new ideas to car safety. It used a self-supporting unibody structure, improving both crash protection and production efficiency. Additionally, the car was fitted with a laminated windshield to reduce the risk of injury from broken glass. These early steps in safety and cost-efficiency helped make the Volvo PV444 both affordable to own and dependable on the road.

A step onto the world stage
In 1955, Volvo Cars introduced the PV444 to the American market. It was our first export to the United States and marked the beginning of a long relationship across the Atlantic. Drivers appreciated the PV444’s sturdy build, straightforward engineering and fuel efficiency. It offered something different in a growing car market – a simple, thoughtful alternative with Swedish roots.

A lasting legacy
The PV444 helped shape the future of Volvo Cars. Its focus on space, safety, and long-term value still influences how we design our cars today. That legacy continues in modern models like the Volvo EX30 – a small car with thoughtful design and advanced safety technology that puts people first. The PV444 proved that even a modest car could have a significant impact and laid the groundwork for decades of innovation.
