Exterior understanding

Vision beyond the human range

Better understanding for better control.

The future with LiDAR

Coupled with radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors, the advanced LiDAR system will continuously scan the environment in front of the vehicle to create a 3-dimensional understanding of the surroundings. It will see what you sometimes can't and help prepare your car for safe autonomous driving.

A 360° shield of safety

There’s safety in numbers with LiDAR, 5 radars, 8 cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors. Powered by state-of-the-art software, the sensors are designed to work together to create a shield of safety. Each sensor backs up the others to help you feel safe, supported and in control.

Driver understanding

Ready if you’re not

Extra support when you need it.

We’re all good drivers, but at times we’re not at our best. Our driver understanding system will help create a shield of safety that you don’t know is there until you need it. Two interior sensors and a capacitive steering wheel will feed information to an algorithm, which will also talk to the car’s exterior sensors. It will understand if you are distracted or drowsy and when it might need to step in and support.

Occupant sensing

Looks out for everybody on board

A second pair of eyes to help you avoid leaving loved ones behind.

With interior radars covering the whole cabin - from the front seats to the load compartment - our new occupant sensing system is designed to help prevent anyone from being inadvertently left behind in a potentially dangerous scenario. We'll alert you if it looks like you're accidentally locking a sleeping child or a snoozing dog in the car, while the in-car climate system can also potentially help minimise the risk of hypothermia and heatstroke, for example.

A new era begins now.

Our experts reveal the research and insights behind the innovations shaping the future at Volvo Cars

Jim Rowan Announces a New Era for Safety for Volvo Cars

Introducing the first Volvo car in a new era. And the start of a new era for safety. Where cars don’t just understand the outside environment, but also the driver’s state inside. We’re yet to achieve our safety vision: that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. To continue our journey towards zero, we’re introducing innovations that will change how we all see safety. A new era for safety begins with the Volvo EX90, our new fully electric flagship SUV. Presented by Jim Rowan, CEO. Visit https://volvoca.rs/3dvSsVG to learn more. #SafetyInMind

What if your car could see beyond the human range?

We all need someone looking out for us. With LiDAR technology you’ll have an extra set of "eyes" that can see beyond the human range, by night and by day. Presented by Joachim de Verdier. Coming soon with the Volvo EX90, our new fully electric flagship SUV. Visit https://volvoca.rs/3dvSsVG to learn more. #SafetyInMind

What if your car could steer you right?

Sometimes life gets the better of us and our attention goes off track. Volvo Cars’ new driver understanding system knows when you’re not at your best so it can be ready to support you at a moment's notice. Presented by Emma Tivesten and Michael Ljung Aust. Coming soon to the Volvo EX90, our new fully electric flagship SUV. Visit https://volvoca.rs/3dvSsVG to learn more. #SafetyInMind

What if your car could remind you when someone’s left behind?

We’re human. Life happens. When you’re not at your best, we’ll be there to help with our full-cabin occupant sensing system. Designed to remind you if it looks like you’re accidentally locking a sleeping child or pet in the car. Presented by Lotta Jakobsson.
