Human Made Stories

Volvo Car UK has today announced Human Made Stories, a series of short films in partnership with Sky Atlantic, to mark its new 90 series range of cars.

In parallel with Volvo's values of innovation, sustainability, craftsmanship and design, Human Made Stories conveys the Volvo philosophy to always put people first by telling the stories of three defiant pioneers: people who inherently do things differently, challenge conventions and create their own path.

New Kitesurfing Record

4 New World Records

A British kitesurfing family is celebrating after successfully taking on the Round the Isle of Wight World Sailing Speed Challenge and setting four new World Records.

Professional kitesurfers – Steph Bridge and sons Olly (18) and Guy (16) – took to the waters around the Isle of Wight on 30 June 2016 on their foiling kitesurf boards. Travelling the 50 nautical miles around the coastline of the Island on the south coast of the UK, they averaged speeds between 16 and 20 knots.

Guy was first around the island in a time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 25 seconds, averaging speeds of 19.68 knots, with the World Sailing Speed Record (WSSR) Council confirming that Guy is now officially the Fastest Kitesurfer around the Isle of Wight. He also set the record for the Fastest Singlehanded Sailor around this island at the same time

VOLVO V90 REIGNS SUPREME

VOLVO V90 REIGNS SUPREME AT SCOTTISH CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS

The Volvo V90 has been named 2016 Scottish Car of the Year at the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers' Awards in Edinburgh. Volvo's new premium estate also won the Estate Car of the Year award.

The V90 beat stiff competition to win the coveted Car of the Year title, and was praised for its practicality, high-quality interior and stylish good looks. The judges were also impressed by its innovative technology, which includes the ground-breaking Sensus touch screen infotainment system. This is designed to operate like a smartphone or tablet, and allows you to control most of the car's functions using simple swipe or pinch and zoom gestures – even when you're wearing gloves.

This focus on advanced technology extends to every part of the car. The D5 diesel engine, for example, benefits from PowerPulse, an ingenious Volvo-designed system that uses compressed air to boost responsiveness at low revs. There's also Pilot Assist, the semi-autonomous drive technology that is fitted as standard to all V90s. This pioneering driver aid takes care of the steering, acceleration and braking at up to 80 mph, helping to make long motorway journeys less stressful and tiring.

Stephen Park, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said: "Be in no doubt, the Volvo V90 is an exceptional car and one which reshapes the estate car marketplace. The judges were impressed by the way it marries traditional Volvo family values with a head-turning sense of style, advanced technology, exceptional build quality, safety, driving dynamics and one of the best cabin environments of any car at any price. In short, we reckon it's the most accomplished new car to be launched this year and one which offers strong appeal in the unique Scottish marketplace."

Every V90 also comes with a host of advanced safety equipment as standard, including two world-first aids: Large Animal Detection and Run-off Road Mitigation. Large Animal Detection helps to prevent collisions with animals such as deer by scanning the area in front of the car and automatically applying the brakes in an emergency if you fail to react in time. Run-off Road Mitigation is designed to stop the car inadvertently leaving the road by applying the steering if the car gets too close to the edge of the carriageway.

V40 is UK’s safest used car

Volvo V40 is UK’s safest used car, says Co-op Insurance

The Volvo V40 has been presented with the ‘Co-op Safe Used Car 2016’ award. The inaugural Co-op Insurance award celebrates the safest used cars typically bought by families in the UK.

Working in collaboration with safety experts Thatcham Research, Co-op Insurance awarded the trophy to the Volvo V40 with Driver Support Pack, which beat strong competition from the Volkswagen Golf and Nissan Qashqai to claim the title.

In order to be in the running for the award – which is the first to recognise safety in the UK used car market – all the cars had to have a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, CO2 emissions of 120 g/km or lower and be available to buy on the second-hand market for £15,000 or less. The cars were then evaluated further on their crash worthiness, which included ratings for adult, child and pedestrian protection, and the availability of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

The Volvo V40 received the top rating of five stars in its Euro NCAP crash test in 2012, and its overall scores are still the highest ever recorded by the safety assessment institute.

The V40 was one of the first cars to have AEB as standard. The system, known as City Safety, works at speeds of up to 31 mph and will automatically apply the brakes if it senses an impending crash to avoid the collision entirely or lessen its severity. The V40 was also the first car in the world to come with an airbag to help protect pedestrians in an accident.

The optional Driver Support Pack for the V40 provides class-leading safety technology, including Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, Road Sign Information, and Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, which is capable of working at all speeds.1

James Hillon, Director of Products at Co-op Insurance, said: “At the Co-op, we are keen to help educate people not only about car safety, but about what they should be thinking about before they even set foot on a car forecourt."

“The Volvo V40 was awarded the accolade because it is a perfect example of a reasonably priced car that has a large number of safety features as standard, even on older models. It has a five-star Euro NCAP rating and provides good protection in a crash for the driver and front passenger, as well as children. Where it really shines, though, is in the standard of collision-avoidance technology available.”

Bruce Greenwood, Used Car Programme Manager for Volvo Car UK, said: “With renowned Volvo safety, quality and dependability, as well as the peace of mind you get when buying through the Volvo Selekt Approved Used Car programme, the Volvo V40 is an outstanding used family car choice."

“Volvo is committed to protecting drivers, passengers and pedestrians, and we are thrilled that the V40 has been recognised by Co-op Insurance as the first ever ‘Co-op Safe Used Car’.”
